Chapter 28

Hazel was at home alone when she heard a knock at the door. A wave of fear crept into her mind, reminding her of the past incident that still haunted her.

"Hazel, open the door," came Enzo's voice, deep and familiar. Her heart leapt with excitement, but doubt lingered in the back of her mind.

She moved toward the door hesitantly and opened it. Enzo stood there, looking as stunning as ever. Desire stirred in her—she wanted to keep him close, but how could she when she still didn't truly know him? He had to open up to her first.

"Hazel, why the hell didn't you answer me?" Enzo asked as he stepped into the house.

Hazel remained silent, searching for the right words.

"Talk to me, Hazel. What's wrong?" he pressed, placing his hands gently on her shoulders. His dark eyes locked onto hers, searching for answers she wasn't ready to give.

"Who are you, Enzo?" she finally managed to ask, her voice trembling.

"What do you mean? I'm your Enzo," he replied, his tone soft as he touched her face gently.

"But I don't really know you, do I? You're hiding things from me," Hazel said, her voice breaking as tears streamed down her cheeks.

Enzo opened his mouth to respond, but his expression changed the moment he noticed the faint dark patches beneath her eyes. His face hardened, a shadow of anger crossing his features.

"What are these? What happened? Who hit you?" he demanded, his voice sharp with concern. Hazel froze, shocked that he could tell what had happened without her saying a word.

She stared at him, unsure how to respond.

"Tell me who did this to you," Enzo said, his voice rising. He didn't look like himself anymore—his usual calm, composed demeanor had vanished, replaced by something almost frightening.

"Hazel, you'd better tell me who hurt you. Or I'll find out myself, and—" he began, his tone escalating into a yell.

"Someone... someone came," Hazel muttered, trying to calm him. She hated the way his anger filled the room. She took a shaky breath and began to explain everything that had happened.

"Why did you tell them about me?" Enzo asked angrily, though it was clear his frustration wasn't directed at her.

"I... I thought you were in danger," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Danger? Hazel, no one can do anything to me. Don't ever do something like that again. Promise me," Enzo said firmly.

Hazel hesitated, torn. She loved Enzo deeply, and the thought of putting him in harm's way was unbearable. But how could she promise something that felt so impossible? She couldn't imagine what she'd do if something bad ever happened to him.

"Promise me," Enzo repeated, his dark eyes boring into hers. There was something in her expression—a quiet vulnerability—that reminded him of Manuel.

"Hazel, promise me," he insisted.

"I... I don't want you to get hurt," she admitted, her voice breaking.

Enzo closed his eyes for a moment, his jaw tightening.

'I know who did this. Papa must have done this to scare her,' Enzo thought, his mind racing.

"Hazel, I think we should... we should break up," Enzo said quietly, his voice heavy with emotion.

Hazel wasn't surprised. As much as she loved Enzo, trust had always been an issue between them. Their relationship was far from perfect—it was painful at times. She thought, even if Enzo were with another girl, that girl probably wouldn't last a month with him.

"Okay," Hazel said, her tone calm. She was tired too. Tired of the uncertainty, the lack of answers, and the emotional strain. She knew it would take her a long time to truly move on from Enzo, but deep down, she felt this relationship couldn't work without knowing who Enzo really was and without having his full attention.

"Promise me, if something bad happens, you'll tell me," Enzo said, holding her gaze.

She nodded, agreeing silently.

As Enzo left her house, his heart felt heavy, weighed down by anger at Papa. He couldn't bear the thought of Gerardo hurting Hazel because of him. Losing someone he truly loved again wasn't something he could handle. At least now, he told himself, Hazel might have a chance to live happily with someone else—someone who could give her what he couldn't.

"What happened?" Manuel asked, noticing the sadness etched on Enzo's face. He could tell something was seriously wrong.

"I broke up with her," Enzo replied, his voice low. He went on to recount everything Hazel had told him.

"Do you think it's the boss?" Manuel asked, concern evident in his tone.

"Who else?" Enzo said, frustration flashing in his dark eyes.

"I don't think he wants to hurt you anymore," Manuel said gently, touching Enzo's face as if trying to comfort him. "Don't be sad. Maybe this happened for the best." It hurt Manuel to see Enzo in so much pain.

"Papa, you must do something for me," Enzo said, his voice firm.

"You know I'd do anything for you," Manuel replied, his eyes filled with quiet determination.
