Read the author's note at the end
I came outside, feeling the weight of everything getting too personal. My whole personal life was a mess, and the last thing I wanted was to get involved in someone else's drama.
"Tia, go home now. It's late," I told her, seeing the worry in her eyes.
"I'll be fine. Go, it's late."
"Okay, ma'am," she said, reluctantly agreeing. I told her to message me as soon as she reached home.
As I was about to book a hotel for the night-because staying here was just not an option-I heard a voice call out to me. I knew who it was before I turned around.
There he was, still in his white shirt and black pants, sleeves rolled up, collar messed up. His veiny hands, adorned with a Rolex watch, came into view, and I felt my stomach flutter with wild thoughts.
My man has grown some beard. I like it .
What was happening to me?
"You're leaving again?" he asked, coming closer.
"Abir... I-"
"Meri bhi galti thi kya kuch, Mishti? Hmm?" His voice broke, and I felt the guilt wash over me. I had hurt him. I had hurt my Abir.
"No, no, Abir. Tumhari toh koi galti nahi thi. Abir, I... I couldn't do it," I stuttered, unable to meet his eyes.
"Then why didn't you even inform me, Mishti? You know I was looking for you everywhere until I saw your photos in the news."
"I know you were looking for me, but Abir, I was scared. I didn't want to meet any of them. I didn't tell you because agr m tumhe btati toh sabko pta lag jata ."
"You didn't want to see me?"
"No, except you. I didn't want to meet anyone, Abir. It hurts," I explained, trying to control my tears. I couldn't act strong in front of him.
"Then don't leave now."
"I don't want to leave, Abir, but if I stay here, they'll all try to contact me. And it hurts, Abir. I can't just forget everything suddenly, right?"
"I know. And trust me, jab tak aap ready nahi hogi, I won't let any of them meet you. Mishti, come on, trust me this time, hmm?"
I nodded, tears rolling down my cheeks. He took me into his arms.
"Abir, it hurts so badly that sometimes I can't even breathe."
"I know, baby. Let's go from here, hmm?"
"But where?"
"To my penthouse, hmm? Let's go. Come on," he said, gently lifting me in his arms.
He opened the car door for me, and I settled into the passenger seat. He got in and drove us away.
As Abir drove us away from the house, the city lights blurred past, casting a warm glow inside the car. I stared out the window, my mind heavy with thoughts. Abir glanced over at me, his expression softening as he saw the sadness etched on my face.
"Hey, Mishti," he said, his voice playful, "do you remember the first time we met?"
I turned to look at him, curiosity piqued. "Of course, I do. You spilled coffee all over me because everyone was talking to me."
He chuckled, a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Yeah, and you were so mad. I thought you were going to kill me right then and there."
I couldn't help but smile at the memory. "Well, you did ruin my favorite dress."
"And to make up for it, I bought you a new one," he said, his tone teasing. "Which, if I remember correctly, you said looked better on you anyway."
I laughed, feeling a bit of the tension ease. "It did. You have surprisingly good taste for a guy."
He winked at me. "I have good taste in everything, especially in people."
I rolled my eyes, but the smile stayed on my face. "You're so full of yourself."
"Only because I have to be, to keep up with you," he said, his tone suddenly softer, more sincere.
I felt a warmth spread through me at his words. "Abir, you always know how to make me feel better."
"That's my job," he said with a grin. "And speaking of jobs, I have another one right now. I need to make you laugh."
I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. "Oh really? And how do you plan to do that?"
He pretended to think for a moment, then snapped his fingers. "I've got it! How about a little game? I'll ask you a question, and you have to answer honestly."
"Okay," I said, curious. "Shoot."
He looked at me, a playful gleam in his eyes. "What do you call a bear with no teeth?"
I laughed, shaking my head. "I don't know, what?"
"A gummy bear," he said, grinning from ear to ear.
I couldn't help but laugh at the ridiculous joke. "That was terrible."
"But it made you laugh," he pointed out, his smile widening.
"Fine, you win this round," I conceded, still chuckling.
He glanced at me, his eyes twinkling. "And for the next round... how about this? What did the ocean say to the beach?"
I rolled my eyes, already knowing it was going to be another silly joke. "What?"
"Nothing, it just waved," he said, laughing along with me.
"You're such a dork," I said, feeling a genuine lightness in my heart.
"But I'm your dork," he said, his voice gentle. "And I wouldn't have it any other way."
I looked at him, my heart swelling with affection. "Thank you, Abir. For everything."
"Always, Mishti," he said, reaching over to squeeze my hand. "Always."

Abir's penthouse
We drove on, the night feeling a little less heavy, and my heart a little more hopeful, with Abir by my side, making me laugh and reminding me that I wasn't alone.
We reached his penthouse, and before I could even open the door, Abir ran around to my side, dramatically bowing his head while offering his hand. I laughed at his gesture, bowing dramatically in return before taking his hand. His eyes sparkled as he smiled at me, making my heart flutter.
"Mishti, let's make this place our home, hmm?" he said softly, his voice filled with warmth.
I nodded, smiling up at him, and then pulled him into a hug.
"Our place," I mumbled into his chest, feeling a sense of peace wash over me.
Pulling his hand, I eagerly led him towards the entrance. "Jaldi chalo, I want to go inside!"
He laughed, matching my enthusiasm as we made our way through the beautiful garden. The flowers, the perfectly manicured lawns-everything about this place was enchanting.
As we reached the door, Abir suddenly stopped me. "You can't go inside."
I stared at him, shocked. "What?"
He grinned, mischief dancing in his eyes. "I mean, I want to welcome you properly, my girl. Wait here."
I watched curiously as he dashed inside. Peeking through the doorway, I saw him return with a kalash filled with rice.
"Abir, what are you doing?" I asked, a smile spreading across my face.
How did I get so lucky?
"Now come inside, meri jaan," he said, his voice tender.
I gently pushed the kalash, letting the rice spill onto the floor as he took my hand and pulled me closer.
"Let's first go to Kanha ji, hmm?" I suggested, looking up at him.
"Haanji, bilkul," he agreed.
We walked to the small temple in his home, and both of us bowed our heads in prayer.
"Kanha ji, please Abir ko hamesha khush rakhna," I whispered, my eyes closed.
"Kanha ji, please Mishti ko Jo chiye use de dena please " Abir prayed aloud.
I looked at him, our eyes meeting with a shared understanding. This was our new beginning, and with Abir by my side, I felt ready to face anything.
After our prayers, I led Mishti upstairs to show her around the penthouse. "Let me get you some clothes to change into. You can freshen up in my bathroom while I use the guestroom," I suggested, opening my wardrobe. I pulled out one of my oversized shirts and a pair of comfortable sweatpants for her.
"Here you go," I said, handing the clothes to her with a grin."I hope you like the 'boyfriend' style."
Mishti blushed, taking the clothes from me. "Thanks, Abir," she mumbled, her eyes avoiding mine.
"Don't mention it," I replied, unable to resist teasing her.
"But I must say, you're going to look adorable in these."
Her blush deepened, and she hurried off to the guest bathroom, clutching the clothes to her chest. I chuckled to myself, loving how easily I could make her shy.
While she was getting ready, I quickly freshened up in my own bathroom. I couldn't help but smile as I thought about her in my clothes.
It felt intimate, like we were already building a life together.
Abir's Room
When I came out, I found her standing in my room, looking slightly awkward in my oversized shirt and sweatpants. The shirt hung loosely on her frame, and the sweatpants were comically large, but she looked incredibly cute.
"Wow, Mishti," I said, leaning against the doorframe with a smirk. "You should consider a career in fashion. You make my clothes look way better than I do."
She rolled her eyes, but I could see the hint of a smile on her lips. "Stop teasing, Abir."
I walked over to her, closing the distance between us. "But I love teasing you," I said, my voice dropping to a whisper as I leaned in closer. "You look adorable when you get shy."
Mishti's cheeks flushed a deep red, and she looked down, trying to hide her face. I gently lifted her chin, making her meet my gaze.
"You don't need to be shy around me, Mishti," I said softly. "I think you're perfect just the way you are."
She bit her lip, clearly flustered, and I couldn't resist the urge to tease her a little more.
"Come on, let's see how well you can handle these pants," I joked, pretending to trip on the hem of my sweatpants that were dragging on the floor.
Mishti laughed, her nervousness easing a bit. "Maybe you should consider getting smaller clothes," she quipped back, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
"Or maybe you just need to grow a little taller," I retorted playfully, earning another laugh from her.
We spent the next few minutes just enjoying each other's company, the atmosphere light and filled with laughter. It was moments like these that made everything feel right.
Finally, I suggested, "How about we order some dinner and watch a movie? We can make it a cozy night in."
Mishti nodded, her eyes bright with excitement. "That sounds perfect, Abir."
As I went to grab my phone to order food, I couldn't help but feel a sense of contentment wash over me. Mishti was here, and we were together. No matter what challenges lay ahead, I knew we could face them as long as we had each other.
I ordered pizza and garlic bread with Coke. Soon enough, our order arrived-impressive speed, no doubt due to my insistence on quick delivery for my hungry sweetheart.
I went inside with the food, smiling as I saw Mishti setting up the VFX and starting the movie "Jab We Met." She looked over at me and smiled, "Aao Abir, jaldi!"
I rushed over, and we settled ourselves on the bed. I laid down while she rested her head on my bicep. With one hand, I held her by the shoulder. We shared the pizza, and she fed me between bites, sipping Coke through a straw while lying on me. I ruffled her hair and gently ran my fingers through it, focusing on the movie. She kept asking me about the characters, more to confirm I'd seen it than out of curiosity. I chuckled each time.
As the movie neared its end, I glanced at her and saw she had fallen asleep. I kissed her forehead, settled her comfortably on my chest, and softly ruffled her hair. How much pain she must have gone through? I wondered. Looking at her peaceful face, her almost pouted lips, her eyelashes resting on her cheeks, her dimples, and her flawless skin-it was clear she took good care of herself.
Resting my forehead against hers, I drifted off to sleep too.
But soon, in the middle of the night, I moved my hand and felt no one beside me. Where is she? I quickly got up and checked the washroom, but she wasn't there. I went outside and saw her on the balcony, sitting with her knees hugged to her chest, staring at the sky.
I walked towards her. "Mishti..."
She turned her head slightly, acknowledging my presence but not speaking. I could see the reflection of the moonlight in her eyes, making them glisten.
I sat down beside her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. "What's wrong, sweetheart?"
She sighed, resting her head on my shoulder. "I couldn't sleep. Too many thoughts running through my mind."
I tightened my hold on her, offering silent support. "You want to talk about it?"
She shook her head. "Not right now. I just... I needed some air."
I nodded, understanding. We sat in silence for a few moments, the cool night air wrapping around us. I rubbed her back gently, trying to soothe her.
"You know," I said softly, "I'm here for you, always. No matter what."
She looked up at me, her eyes filled with gratitude and a hint of sadness. "I know, Abir. And that means the world to me."
I kissed her forehead, then leaned back to look at her. "How about we make a promise? No matter how tough things get, we won't let go of each other."
She smiled faintly, a tear slipping down her cheek. "I promise."
We stayed there for a while, just holding each other, finding solace in the quiet night and each other's presence. Eventually, I felt her relax, the tension easing out of her body.
"Come on, let's go back to bed," I whispered, standing up and offering her my hand.
She took it, and together we walked back inside, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead, as long as we had each other.
