Flametail darted forward, leaping for the rock him and his clan mates were playing with. He had nearly caught it when he heard a crack. The ice underneath him flipped up and he was plunged into darkness.

This is what I saw in my dream! He realized. He tried to swim up but the current was too strong. Oh StarClan why! He wanted to wail, why'd this have to happen?

Suddenly, a gray shape swam towards him. Flametail stared up at it. It was so peaceful down here, who was this coming to join him. Flametail recognized Jayfeather as he neared him.

What's Jayfeather doing down here? He wondered. The blind tom swam down and grabbed him by the scruff. He kicked against the current and tried to drag Flametail up.

Don't fight the current. Flametail gazed calmly at the gray tabby tom. It's peaceful down here, why would you want to leave?

A hairless shape appeared in the water nearby. It was a blind, hairless cat. Flametail didn't think any cat could be that ugly as he watched the blind creature staring at Jayfeather.

Let him go. It's his time to die, not yours. Flametail heard the voice echo in his mind. It took him a heartbeat to realize the hairless cat was talking to Jayfeather.

Jayfeather glared at the creature with his blind blue eyes and shook his head. Anger flashed in his eyes and he kicked harder with his hind legs.

Jayfeather glanced down and stared at Flametail with pleading eyes. Help me! His eyes seemed to say. Flametail blinked calmly. What did he need help with?

Suddenly realization dawned on Flametail and he kicked hard with his hind paws. We have to get out of here! He wanted to screech and him and Jayfeather kicked hard in an attempt to escape the sucking water.

I told you to let go, The creature's voice hissed through Flametail's mind. Flametail turned and glared at the creature. No! He screeched at it, kicking hard with his legs as him and Jayfeather slowly swam up.

Flametail's lungs were screaming for air and he felt darkness at the edge of his vision. StarClan help, he prayed before everything went dark.

Flametail blinked open his eyes and gasped for air. He was laying on the edge of the lake, his clan mates were crowding around him. He saw their mouths moving but all he heard was a ringing sound.

He felt cold. He watched as Littlecloud pushed through the crowd and crouched beside him. Why does he look so worried? Flametail wondered.

For the first time he realized that Jayfeather was crouched beside him. What's Jayfeather doing here? Flametail wondered as he gazed at the ThunderClan medicine cat in confusion.

Suddenly he remembered everything. The memory of him falling through the ice and nearly drowning crashed over him like a wave. He remembered how Jayfeather had swam down to save him, he remembered the blind cat that had told Jayfeather to let him go.

He shook his head to clear the ringing. "My kit!" He heard Tawnypelt's cries as she pushed through the crowd with Rowanclaw and Blackstar behind her. Flametail coughed up water and slowly got to his paws.

"Will he be okay?" Rowanclaw asked anxiously. "I think so," Littlecloud meowed. "But I'll check him when we get back to camp." Blackstar narrowed his eyes as he spotted Jayfeather. "What's he doing here?" He asked.

"He saved me," Flametail rasped. His throat ached from the water and turned his gaze to Jayfeather. "Thank you for saving my son," Tawnypelt mewed. "ShadowClan owes you," Blackstar told him.

Jayfeather ducked his head. "I should be getting back to ThunderClan," he told them, dipping his head to Blackstar. He paused at the edge of the crowd and glanced back at Flametail. "Let me know if you need anything," he called back before disappearing in the crowd of ShadowClan cats. "Let's get you back to camp," Littlecloud mewed, letting Flametail lean on him.

Once they got back to ShadowClan camp, Flametail went straight to the medicine den and collapsed in his nest. Thank you Jayfeather, and thank you StarClan, he murmured before letting sleep overtake him.
