Chapter 5

"Are you ready?" He asked running his hand through his hair, immediately showing signs that he's uncomfortable.

"Why are you uncomfortable?"

He seemed taken back with my question. "What do you mean?" He asked, his eyes focusing on the road.

I pointed at his hand "You keep running your hand through your hair"

He put his hand back on the steering wheel "No I'm not" he argued.

I gave him a flat look. Which he responded to rolling his eyes at me.

"Do I scare you?" I whispered. I leaned towards him, resting my chin on his shoulder. At the immediate contact he tensed up. "I don't know why you're scared, you know me the most" I turned my chin so my cheek was against his shoulder.

"I don't know" he whispered.

"You don't know what?"

He took a big step for him and rested his head on top of mine "I don't know if I know you anymore" he replied. The car fell silent. The only thing you could hear was the cars engine and the few cars that would pass by on the road.

Right now Max and I were headed to his house to work on our stupid project. I'm never going to be a mother, I told everyone that I already hate kids.

"We're here" he spoke first. I nodded and got out of the car already kinda missing my head rest.

~~~~~~Max P.O.V~~~~~~
"Do I scare you?" she whispered. Does she scare me? I mean she used to be my best friend. We used to be so close but she has changed so much. I would have never recognized her.
Then I felt her head on my shoulder. Without realizing it, I immediately tensed up. I wasn't use to a girls touch. Don't judge me but I'm the shy nerd boy. I don't get the attention a football player would.
"I don't know why you're scared, you know me the most" her words came out in long whispers. I thought about her statement, did I really know her anymore?
"I don't know" I spoke without realizing it.
"You don't know what?" The smell of her hair found its way to my nostrils, vanilla. (Not creepy at all). Wanting to smell her more I rested my head on her head. I never realized how much I missed her until now. Times like this when we were close as kids. But everything has changed and we both know that.
Taking in a deep breath, I replied "I don't know if I know you anymore"
I was kinda glad that she didn't say anything else for the rest of the car ride.
"We're here" I jumped out my car and shut the doors, flinching when I heard Iris slammed her door.
"Sorry" she muttered heading straight for my front door and opening it without knocking. Is that normal? To walk to someone's front door and open it? I would never do that. But I'm too shy to even think about the outcome.
"And may I ask who you are?" I heard my mothers voice from inside the house. Damn it, I thought as I quickly rushed in the house.
When I walked in I saw my mother standing in the kitchen, with her hands on her hip. Then my gaze landed on Iris, who looked unsure of something. I wonder what she was thinking about. If only I could read her mind, then this would all be easy.
"Max" my mothers voice interrupted my thoughts. I looked up to her, making immediate eye contact. "Who is this?" She asked looking between Iris and I. I guess I shouldn't have felt so bad that I didn't recognize her first if my own mother didn't.
"Mom this is Iris Smith" at the sound of her name Iris jumped a little. Which threw me off a tinge.
Mother looked at Iris a once over with a thoughtful expression on her face. "Is it really you sweetheart?"
Iris nodded, causing her dark brown hair to fall off her shoulders.
As in seconds she practically pounced on Iris with hugs and kisses. I tried my best to not laugh at iris's expression, which was horrified.
"I missed you so much!" She announced, continuing to shower her with love.
Iris awkwardly returned a hug, flashing my mom a smile. But the thing was I couldn't tell if it was a real smile or a fake. "I missed you too aunt Jackie" she whispered into her ear. I was able to hear though. Guess it's good to know there's some part of her still there.
"Well mom" I interrupted "Iris and I have to work on a project upstairs"
A sad expression flew on my mom's face, she quickly shook it off. "Okay. I'll make some cookies for you two"
"Alright. Thanks mom we will be upstairs."
Grabbing Iris by the hand, I dragged her upstairs and into my room.
She plopped down on my bed "You know, you didn't have to drag me right? I know the way through your house like the back of my hand"
I plopped down on a bean bag across my bed. Thinking that if I sat beside her, I might get too nervous.
"That isn't creepy at all" I replied.
"It actually isn't"
"Sure it isn't"
"Max"
"Yes?"
"Shut up"
"Why should I?"
She pointed to my school bag "Our baby is crying and she doesn't like your attitude"
Rolling my eyes, I grabbed the fake baby doll out of my school bag. It was pretty light, weights like I real baby I presumed.
Iris covered her ears with her hand "Make it stop crying!" At the sound of her yelling, the baby seemed to cry even louder. I tried rocking it like my mother taught me and what I saw from movies. But it failed
Iris grabbed the doll out of my hand "Hey!" I protested as she grabbed it from the foot and walked towards the window.
"What are you doing?" I yelled at her as she opened the window. The baby continued to cry in her grasp.
"I'm going to make it stop crying" she reached her arm out of the window, dangling the baby. I felt horrified for the baby. Kinda glad that it was only fake but still!
Suddenly the crying stopped. Iris frowned, "I wanted to throw it out the window. But now it's done crying"
I stared at her with wide eyes giving her 'are you serious' look which she shrugged off and threw the baby at me. I tried catching it but my reflexes weren't the best. Instead it hit me straight in the forehead.
Iris laughed and rolled on the bed, unable to contain her laughs. "Oh my gosh!" She laughed while pointing at the baby and then back at me.
I glared at her "Be quiet" she raised her hands in surrender but still laughed. Her laughs sounded angelic and filled the room. It was like a hidden side of her that people didn't often see.
"I like your laugh" I blurted out. Her laugh immediately stopped and her frown was back on her face, of course I had to ruin the moment that was given to me, that's all I do is ruin everything.
The soundless room zoomed filled with ringing. Iris sight, and reached for her phone.
"Who is this?" She asked the other person on the phone, she seemed impatient as her foot tapped on my floor.
A minute has gone by when she suddenly dropped her phone and the room fell silent again.
"Who was it?" I asked hoping we could have that moment again.
She scampered on the floor in trying to pick up her phone.
"Who was it?" I repeated. She looked really worried and frightened. She had the same look that when we were kids and she dropped her stuff animal.
She looked up to me with fear in her eyes for the first time ever. "I g-got to go" she stuttered before running out the door and leaving. I don't know where she was going because I was the one who drove us here but she seemed to scared to realize it.
All I could think about for the rest of the day is, who was on the other line?
