The silence in the room was overwhelming. It felt like many minds were screaming at another.
"So are you okay?" He asked nervously. He didn't know what to do in this situation. I could already tell that he felt even more uncomfortable than I did.
I sat still in my spot, continuing to look out the window. The view was of the street. I watched to see if any cars that looked unfamiliar would pull up in the driveway. I know I was being slightly paranoid. But if I know one thing on Ryder Thames, is that he's the most dangerous person alive, and before that was his father.
"Are you ignoring me?" He asked once again, taking a seat next to me at the window. I didn't even share him a glance as I shook my head.
"Are you always this quiet?"
"Are you always this nagging?" I bit back.
He let out a full heart laugh, causing his shoulders to rise with each breath.
"Actually no" He responded, looking out the window. His blue eyes searching in the far distance, recalling an old memory.
"What changed?" My voice slid with venom. It was a question, but for this question I didn't care for the answer for.
He looked away from the window, landing his gaze on me. "You did"
"Tell me something I don't know" I laughed with no humour at all.
Max shuffled in his seat facing back to the window. "What are we going to do now?"
I sighted as I hopped and out of my set and walked towards the washroom where I grabbed the first aid kit.
"You are going to do nothing" I told him as I took out the peroxide to clean my wounds.
He shuffled over "Let me" he offered taking the bottle.
I shook my head "I can do it myself" I said taking the bottle back.
He sight in frustration "You have to let me help you"
"No I don't" I once again said. Shaking off his hospitality. I never needed anyone's help. And I'm not going to start now.
"Iris.." He groaned.
I was about to pesticide him with a string of curse but was cut off when I heard a baby cry.
"What the hell is that?!" I yelled looking around the room.
Max rolled his eyes before going out of his room and down the stairs. I followed him into the living room where he pick up a baby off the couch.
He held the thing in his hands, cooing at it while rocking it back and forth.
"Look Noah, mommy is home" he whispered to the doll.
My jaw dropped "You named it?" I choked, pointing to the fake baby in his hand.
"Of course it needs a name" he argued. Defending his strange case.
"How do you even know it's a boy?"
He shivered at my question "Well you're looking at the person who has to change the diaper"
I gave him a weird look. Change its diaper? It's a doll.
"I know it's a doll, I was just as surprised when my mother scolded at me that I need to change it. And trust me it's a boy"
I let the subject drop, not even bothering to ask. He already looks scarred for life.
"Why Noah?" I asked curiously. It was a cute name I guess, just every name must come somewhere.
A blush creeped onto Max's face. "Uh re-remember that time w-when we were in the park and a stray puppy tackled you"
As he spoke I started remembering the memory more clearly.
Max and I raced to the slide as fast as we could. We were only five so we weren't that fast but fast enough. Max of course beat me. He jumped up and down in victory as I crossed my arms.
"You cheated" I accused him.
He halted and looked at me, "No I didn't!"
"Yes y-" that's when I was cut off.
I felt my back hit the sand as something heavy laid on top on me. I began to scream in panic, I didn't know what was on top of me. All I wanted was it to get off.
Max ran towards me, prying the thing off of me then cradled in on his lap.
"Iris! It's a puppy!" He cheered while petting it. Max always wanted a puppy but his parents never allowed it.
I slowly shuffled myself towards Max and the puppy. Cautiously, placing my hand in front of it. The dog sniffed it, then surprised me as it licked it.
"Eww" I squealed in a fit of giggles.
Max laughed along with me "What do you want to name it?" he asked me.
I thought long and hard "Lena!" I picked.
He shook his head. "A guy name Iris"
I rolled my eyes "Noah then!"
Any name I was fine with. I liked them both.
"Good choice" Max smiled.
"That dog scared the crap out of me"
"I know" Max teased "You were crying like a baby"
I placed my hand over my chest offensively "I was not" I gasped dramatically.
"Sureeeee, now let me please help you with your cuts" he begged.
I didn't respond, which he took as a yes. As he sat us both down on the couch, he placed the Baby on the other sofa.
I watched silently as Max took a cotton ball and drenched it in peroxide.
"This might sting a little" he whispered. Before dabbing it lightly on my cuts.
I hissed in pain as the injuries began to bubble and clean itself. Max then grabbed a dry tissue and dabbed the remaining stuff off.
His hand was on my cheek, using his thumbs to wipe. But suddenly stopped when he caught my gaze.
I know I said this before but the world froze. Max and I only stared at each other. We were so close. I can feel his breath starting to pick up from the close contact.
"Iris.." He spoke so quietly. I don't understand why I was not pushing him away from me. Why was I letting him stay so close.
His gaze landed on my lips and I knew he was going to take the shot.
Did I want him to kiss me? No I did not! Certainly not!
But why wasn't I moving away from him then?
Out of nowhere he started pulling away, retracting himself away from me.
Look he's backing up! He's not going to kiss us! My thoughts happily cheered. But my heart ached.
Before he can get any further, I grabbed his hand tugging him close again, where I wrapped my arms around his neck and smashed my lips onto his.
He didn't kiss back at first since he was quite shock. But soon followed through with as much need as me.
We pulled apart. Both breathing quite heavily.
I placed the tips on my fingers, feeling the tingling of my lips.
"Would it be strange if I said that was my first kiss?" Max awkwardly put in.
I smiled as I shook my head "No not weird at all. I just wish I was that pure for you" I spoke sadly.
He took my hand in his. "Iris you are pure, you didn't choose to do it. The choice was taken from you" he tried to soothe me, let's just say it didn't quite work as best he thought.
As Max spoke of Ryder my thoughts clamped back. Ryder was still out there, looking for me and he will kill anyone in his way.
"Max" I sobbed, tears running down my cheek again "You're going to hate me"
"Hate you? For what? I would never hate you" he pulled me close, clutching onto me.
I took the jump, spilling out the most emotion I have ever spilled out in over a year. "I have to go. I have to leave town"
He pulled away "Leave town?" He asked. "You just got back"
"I know but I need to leave. Ryder being at the dinner was a sign. He wanted to mess with me before he caught me. Max, I need to run. If he gets me again, I know I won't come out of this alive."
"I'll go with you then"
"You can't" I fired back "You'll get yourself killed, you are not as well trained as I am"
He squeezed my hands tighter in his "Then train me"
I looked at him unsurely. This boy was a walking feather. He was delicate and flammable. He can't possibly be trained as a killer. Come to think of it though, I was once in his shoes.
"I'll train you then"
Max beamed in delight as his lips went back onto mine.
For some reason I felt like I was going to regret this decision. But I might have regret it more if I told him goodbye one more time.
