Chapter 15
My heart was pounding to the rhythm of a base drum. I could of sworn it was trying to rip itself out of my chest.
The door in front of me acted like a brick wall. It was keeping from my final destination.
My knuckles shook as they banged against the hard wooden surface. My mind began to race as someone was eager to open the door, and welcome my presence.
"Iris! Hello I'm glad you came!"
"Um. Uh.."
I stood there like an idiot. Only repeating the two words, uh and um. As if it was the only two words I ever knew. I was baffled. Looking at this man again, I could see how he looks so much like my mother. They could have been twins. With their sparkling, dashing blues eyes and soft, thick brown hair. And not to mention the personal similarities they also share. They both give off a powerful stance, waiting for someone to even dare go against them. My mother had the stance, it went down as she became a mother. However, my uncle he seems to always wear it.
Robert opened the door wider, beckoning me to come and follow. The house was massive, as huge as a mansion. It was just so spacious and homey. Surely he can't live alone in this massive house.
"Everyone is gone to work right now, they won't be back till tonight" he explained. He then grabbed a Kleenex out of the box and began wiping a thick coat of dust off a picture frame.
I looked around his office. It was fit for a boss, a gang leader. About a month ago my uncle found me and made contact with me. He explained, he wanted to reach out to his last family members. With my mom and I only being his family, he felt alone.
So he began his quest and found us. He hasn't talked to my mother yet, and told me not to tell her that we were in contact. He says he wants it to be a surprise. In this last month, we had lunch and he told me his life story.
He was a gang leader.
The leader of the Golden Lords.
The first time I heard the name, I almost ended up spitting out my tasty chocolate milk. I was left in giggles and a few good snorts. My uncle sat there embarrassed, not exactly liking the name himself.
"Your great grandfather chose it Iris, not me. Trust me if I could change it I would. But I assure you one thing, if you were to tell anyone that your fierce uncle is the leader of the golden lords they would be trembling in fear" He once told me in a small diner he brought me. I remember that day perfectly. He was my uncle.
Here however, he felt like a scary gang leader.
"You wanted to see me?" I choked knowing he was about to go all boss mode. Don't get me wrong, he was kind when I first walked in, but the kindness felt forced and it scared me. I know, I'm being a scaredy cat. I usually am.
He motioned me to sit down. I took caution as my butt hit the leather seat.
"I need you to do me a favour" he started, stretching out the silence for suspense.
A favour? What could a gang leader possibly want from me? Oh god, I'm going to die, I'm probably going to end up shot in a crazy bank robbery. It's official, I'm good as dead.
"I just finished a treaty meeting with my rival gang, the Gramercy Riffs. And there was a few complications. Their new leader is an idiot 17 year old. He is not fit at all to run a gang. So that means, it will be the perfect opportunity to take over."
I watched him carefully as he starred ahead to the now clean picture frame. His expression turned slightly, from a mean snarl to a sad smile. It took every ounce not to get up and look at the photo he was looking at. From my view I could only see the back of a frame.
He gently put the frame flat on his desk, his snarl revealing again. I was frightened, he looked so scary. My hands shook, to the chattering of my teeth.
"And as you're my only descendant. I need you to take over one day"
I froze, as with my hands and teeth.
"Take over in what, uncle?"
He smiled apologetic "The gang of course"
The next day at school I felt uneasy. With my blue jeans and long white T-shirt I felt like I stood out of the crowd more than ever.
This morning I tried so hard to avoid my mother. If we had one chance to talk at all, she would definitely suspect something was wrong. I was a terrible liar.
I watched silently as my friend Grace approached. She looked like a model walking down the runway, with her stylish fall dress and leather boots.
"You look nice" she complimented me.
I thanked her and returned the favour, she beamed in response, obviously liking the solemn attention.
She then began chatting and chatting. Talking about the latest gossip about celebrities and our fellow classmates. I never cared for drama so my mind turned her off.
My mind did however, turn on the thoughts about my uncles words. Run his gang? Is he serious? If he hasn't noticed I'm fifteen. Surely not old enough to run a fierce drug gang or whatever they do. Plus I don't even know how to fire a gun! Let alone throw a punch. Just the thought of a fist fight makes me want to hurl. I can't stand blood.
"Hello. Are you listening!"
I felt Grace's tiny hands began to shake me, begging for my attention.
"Yeah?" I chuckled , trying to fix the remaining hair mess.
Grace sights as she watches me make a foolish attempt to fix my hair. She waves her hands around trying to get them near my head. I began to protest as she pulls out a brush from her bag and begins to brush. I felt like a dog.
"Now did you hear, we have a new kid. And he's hot if I might add"
I rolled my eyes "Don't you have a boyfriend? A boyfriend who is captain of the basketball team might I add."
"Yes I do, and Caleb and I are very happy. You, however, don't have a boyfriend"
There it is. The usual friends trying to hook up other friends talk. I read about them, just never really experienced them.
"Omg!" She suddenly squealed, quickly finishing my hair and tossing the brush back in her bag.
I stood there confused, as she hurriedly try to compose herself.
"Are you okay?" I asked, I was really concerned about her strange actions.
She looked at me frustrated "Iris! You're so oblivious to the world! Look! The hot new guy is over there and he's coming this way!"
I cranked my head in the direction she looked at and indeed I saw a nice looking boy coming our way.
"Oh well good luck!" I smiled and began walking in the opposite direction.
I didn't get too far when she tugged me back and looked even more flustered.
"Iris he's coming here for you not for me. His gaze is on you!"
Suddenly, she pulled an Iris move and dashed away. At least that's what she calls it.
"Hello, what's your name?" A new voice spoke.
I found myself looking at the guy, he was attractive, really attractive. With black midnight hair and well shaved line on his jaw and chin. It made him look older and well built, not that he needed it you can see the muscles through his shirt. I could also make out the line of tattoos that covered him as sleeves.
"Iris" I answered. My voice was quiet in his presences. It was only ever like this when I talk to my uncle.
The man smiled, showing off his dazzling white teeth. He looked perfect.
He tugged cautiously at his bag trying to look nervous. But for some reason I could see right through him, and being nervous was the last thing he felt.
"I'm Ryder"
He let go of his bag and reached out his hand to shake. I took it.
"Nice to meet you"
