"Cheers, to Victoria, for finally growing up and graduating college!" London toasted her shot glass high above me. I mentally scowled about that nonsense with an obvious eye roll. Everyone else laughed and cheered before we clinked glasses, eager to take our shots.
Tipping my glass back to let the liquid glide its way down my throat. In a more scattered unison, we slammed our glasses back down on the table. The scorching drink bubbled in my chest and lit my throat. My body became loose and relaxed. Drinking for almost an hour, put us in a numbed state which helped our party animals let loose, but for me personally...
it numbed my heart.
"You know what would be fun!" Evelyn said, electrified. "Truth or Dare."
"Ohhhh no, no, no, no!" I said fleetingly. "That's not happening-after what happened in high school-not falling into that trap again."
"Come on!" London wined "In honor of you," She said mockingly, "at least let us entertain you with a good game." She said with a suppressed smirk. Her words had any other idea to it, like she wasn't actually interested in playing, but was more interested to get into some trouble. I couldn't get a response out fast enough, so London took advantage of my embarrassment
"Truth or Dare, Victoria!" She leaned in as if she was challenging me, and she knew if she applied a little pressure the reaction could be worthwhile. Of course, letting a couple of drinks speak for me, I sat back and with pride said. "Dare."
As if pre-planned, she motioned the girls to huddle, secluding me from that group. Whispers and giggles hinted at their devious plan. They took amused glances at me. Before almost nodding their heads in unison. I cleared my voice to only receive the response of secret smiles and classified mischievous eyes. The group finally dispersed.
"We dare you..." she paused for dramatic effect.
"...to have a one-night stand!"
My heart sank into a bottomless pit of my stomach, launching a strange feeling of longing to fall with my heart. I could have guessed I wouldn't have ever forgotten about him even after only a couple of drinks, or even after the long period of becoming a workaholic, where I'd never let those haunting thoughts linger for a split second in my mind. It was a temporary solution for a permanent problem.
My first breakup with my first lover, Easton, was the reason I suffered and felt my heart was meant to endure this pain forever.
I understood that they were only trying to medicate me, get me hooked on something new, and get rid of this weird-ass loyalty I felt towards him. I was used as something that could be tried on and played with until it became dull.
But maybe I could subconsciously break the promise I made with my heart that "He is the only one, my only love," and let someone else have the satisfaction of having my attention.
"Someday... your, gonna get it," I warned her. She cracked her beautiful smile. "Or maybe one day...you'll thank me," We all laugh and they cheer me on. Evelyn elbows me in the side and motions her head to behind me. We shift to understand what we were supposed to be looking at. "I personally recommend the hottie who's been observing you for hours." We all squeal and giggle together. I turn my head while laughing to finally meet the eyes that have been watching me from the corner. Color lights absorbed each other adding to the vigor environment. The pulse of the music rose and the beat dropped.
His eye contact was static, sending a feverish feeling that rippled and echoed throughout my being. My body longed to match the eagerness that was shown in just the eye contact that seized my feelings. The hammer of the coruscating red lights draped across his gorgeous face contouring it with a dark mysteriousness, and it was as if I could see the lustfulness through a new pair of eyes. The club set up the potential for someone so handsome to become so irresistible that it was alluring.
Coming out of the captivating trance I found myself twisting out of my chair. Thank goodness a waitress had visited our table, cause I had to prepare myself. With gathered confidence, I took my shot, "Wish me, luck girls."
"You won't need it!" Evelyn giggles.
I take my final breath before I turn around to face the next moments of my life.
