Chapter 15: Before Science Class

"I can see why you don't like your teacher," Logan commented as the bell rang.

"It's not that I don't like her," Harper corrected, gathering her books and slipping them into her bag, "She's just..."

"Not like our teachers back home?"

"...Yeah." It was weird to think of her father's home as her home. She didn't even know the name of the town, now that she thought about it. This was her home now. Not Oshkosh, not wherever she had lived with her father. Here. Just north of Lake Superior. But Logan still thought of his town as hers as well. Maybe that meant he expected her to come back...

"So, where do we go now?" Logan asked, standing.

"Across the hall."

Across the hall was the science and math room. Since there were only three rooms total for the juniors and seniors, they were reused often each day. The classes also changed throughout the day, which meant some kids changed classes 2 times while others were leaving after every class. Harper had been lucky enough to get a simpleish schedule.

The math and science room was pretty much completely white with a few posters on the walls of animals with weird captions on them and drawings made by students. Tile floors increased the sounds of student's footprints as they walked in and sat at the tables, which had been pushed together so there could be 4 people in a group. Up at the front of the room where two tanks; one had two fish and a turtle named Jane. The other had a salamander named Salthazar who received a lot of attention from students, even when all he did was sleep.

"Woah," Logan chuckled briefly looking inside Jane's tank.

"You sound like everyone else," Harper grinned and walked to her group's table in the back of the room. She was very happy that she sat there, especially since the more energetic kids sat far away from her, which meant less attention from the teacher.

Dropping her bag at her spot, she grabbed an extra chair from the wall. They were mostly used for footrests or as a step stool, but their intended purpose was for any visiting students. No one batted an eye as she took one for Logan. She was so far under the radar that some kids went to her on the first day of school asking her if she was new and where she went to school before there. Once she told them that she'd been in their class for a few years, she was normally left alone since they figured there was a reason they didn't talk to her. And there was. She'd stood up for a girl in the first few days of school, before she figured out the class hierarchy. The girls had stopped when she threatened them, and had punched a hole in the wall behind a door to secure it.

"Here," she said, sliding the chair towards Logan, "Hopefully if you sit by the wall Mr Davidson won't notice you."

"Why would noticing me be bad?" Logan asked, though he did as Harper suggested.

"Think Mrs Crawford. Now think her exact opposite. That's Mr Davidson."

"I'm still not sure why that's bad."

Harper thought for a moment, "So, you know how Mrs Crawford said nothing about you? She definitely knew you were there. She just doesn't think of a new student to be important. Mr Davidson, on the other hand... likes to make students feel foolish."

Logan grinned, "Well, he sounds great!"

Harper shook her head in disbelief, "I'll never understand you. Forgetting elementary school, ok with a teacher who makes everyone embarrassed. What's next, being jealous of my anonymous friend who neither of us know?"

He opened his mouth to reply when a girl sat in the chair across from Harper, "What's up, Harp?"

Harper winced, "Evie, we talked about this."

"Oh- sorry Harper," Evie said slowly, as if she wanted to make sure she didn't slip again, "Its just so easy."

"Yeah. I know."

Evie seemed to finally notice Logan's presence and she leaned on the table, putting her chin in her hands, "Well, well, well, who's this?"

"Uh... I'm Logan," he said slowly, as if he wasn't used to flirting. He'd spent a few years with Jacob back at his home, why was this so weird?

"Hi, Logan," Evie smiled, "I'm Evie."

"And he's taken," Harper said sternly, putting her hand on his arm as she spoke. She wasn't jealous or anything. Logan did have a girlfriend back home. He'd said so himself. And besides, he just wasn't used to the people here. Especially people like Evie, who'd leaned back slightly, a pout on her face.

"You're no fun," she told Harper before looking back at Logan, "If you change your mind, I can give you my number!" She winked. Logan obviously forced a smile, and Harper could see the panic in his eyes.

"Evie, cut it out," a boy walked over and sat next to her, "We've had this talk before: no flirting with people until you know they're single."

Evie sighed, "You aren't fun either, Cody."

"You want 'not fun,' just wait until Jayden gets here."

Harper looked over at Cody curiously, "I thought he would be gone for another week."

Cody shook his head, "Something came up. Not completely sure what, but he's back. Showed up yesterday."

Harper groaned and put her head against her desk, "Of course."

"Um, what's wrong with this 'Jayden' guy?" Logan asked.

"I'm sorry, what's your name?" Cody asked.

"Logan."

"Pleasure. Listen, Jayden's one of.... those people."

Logan didn't immediately say anything to show he understood, so Harper sat up and faced him, "He's like Jacob but less talk more act."

"Oh. That's... oh." Was all Logan managed.

"Who's Jacob?" Evie asked, winding her curly red hair around her finger.

"A kid back home," Logan told her, "One of my friends a few states away."

Evie pouted again, "Bummer. He sounds great."

Cody rolled his eyes, "Anyways, Jayden likes finding one target and picking on them for the year. Normally the quiet students that most people don't care about. Then there's nobody willing to stop him."

"Those people are normally a bit scarred, and rightfully so," Harper added, shuddering.

Evie shrugged, "I don't know. He sounds kinda fun to me." Which earned her a punch in the shoulder from Cody, "Hey! I'm just stating the truth. Even Harper is at least kinda into him!"

Harper frowned, "Yes. Because I'm definitely into a pervert who treats girls and boys alike like toys until they aren't fun anymore. Because that's definitely the kind of person I would like to be in a relationship with."

"Wait- aren't you two..." Cody gestured back and fourth between Logan and Harper. They both paused a moment before laughing.

"Oh, no, no, no," Logan began, "I have a girlfriend back home. I just came to visit."

"We went to the same school, took me here to get away from my psycho mom, you know, the usual." Harper added, "We're just friends."

Cody looked like he was about to counter before he paused and shrugged, "You know, I've had you in enough classes to know not to question it when you mention something from your weird family."

Nobody had time to say anything to that before he sat down. Jayden. Blonde hair, bright eyes, he was a dream boyfriend for the popular girls and the worst nightmare of everyone else. Kicking his feet up on the desk, he wrapped an arm around Harper's shoulders, making both her and Logan tense up.

"Hey sweetheart," he said quietly as Harper struggled to move his arm.

"No," was all she said, pushing his arm away and sliding her chair towards Logan.

Jayden looked at Logan before smirking at Evie, "Where'd you pick him up?"

Evie blushed and tucked the hair she'd been messing with behind her ear, "I wish I knew. Unfortunately, he's Harper's, not mine."

"Uh- Evie I just told you we weren't a thing!" Harper insisted, pinching the bridge of her nose.

Jayden had apparently frowned at the notion of Logan being Harper's boyfriend, because now a grin grew on his face, "Oh, well, that's a shame. You two may have looked good together," again, he wrapped his arm around her shoulders, "But not as good as me and Harp here-"

"No!" Harper said again, punching him in the side. She didn't try very hard, though. Not because she didn't want to hurt him - she really wanted someone to kick him where the sun don't shine - but because he was a jock, and her best efforts probably wouldn't have done much.

Still, Jayden had the decency to look like she'd hurt him, "Aw, come on baby!" This earned him another punch and Harper sliding her chair even farther away, "What's wrong? Worried your friend might get jealous? It's ok, he'll be fine."

"More like I don't want you anywhere near me," Harper said, pushing her chair away again until she was almost right next to Logan.

Jayden smirked and grabbed the edge of her chair, pulling it right next to him as Mr Davidson walked in. The one time Mr Davidson was strict about anything was chairs sliding on the floor; he hated the sound, and had made one of his first classroom rules, "No moving chairs once I enter the room." Which meant she was stuck next to Jayden for at least half of the class, if not the whole thing. She looked to Logan for any kind of help, but she knew he couldn't do anything. Evie was holding his chair in place so he couldn't push it back, and Jayden was still holding her chair.

As if he knew she'd thought of him, Jayden moved one hand to the base of her neck and whispered into her hair, "Come on, baby. What's so bad about this?" He ran his cold fingers along her skin, making her shiver, "The offer still stands. Just once. Please, sweetie? For me?"

Harper shook her head, not quite trusting herself to speak. Jayden let out a quiet sigh, "It's only a matter of time before you agree. We both know that. Why not just get it over with?" When Harper still didn't say anything, he turned, moving his hand back around her shoulders as Mr Davidson began class.

Guys. I'm so sorry. This took so long, when it really shouldn't have. I've just had a lot of drama and stuff keep me busy, and whenever I had free time I had no inspiration or willingness to write. So I finally made myself write a longer chapter today. I know it doesn't make up for it, but I really will try to be better at updating.

So. 3 new characters. They probably won't be very big characters, just minor ones we see here and there. Besides Jayden, tho. Jayden may be one of the first characters that I actually really don't like, and he's barely important to the plot, unfortunately. Maybe that'll change as I write? Idk, but I am currently trying to figure out how I'll be able to use him more, cause I don't want a perfectly good creep to go to waste. What are your thoughts on the 3 characters?

I think that's all for now. Maybe if I have some time later today I'll update again. Anyways, I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and I'll see y'all later! Bye!
