Chapter 14: Why I hate the Doctor's Office
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN 'NOTHING WRONG'?" Isabelle yelled, slamming her fist on the table, "SHE ISN'T SLEEPING. SHE DOESN'T SHOW ANY EMOTION. AND YOU THINK THAT SHE'S FINE?!?"
The doctor didn't even flinch as he straightened the papers on his desk, "Yes, we do. We've never had the chance to study a living subject, and, according to our tests, there isn't anything wrong with her besides that she has a government experiment in her blood. She's bound to be a little different."
Isabelle pushed the stray hairs from her hasty ponytail back into place, ignoring them when they fell in front of her eyes again, "I know she's supposed to be 'different' but this isn't right! When I volunteered they told me she would be just like any normal kid, just with the ability to bring A-" she choked back a sob, "...she's supposed to be able to bring Ashley back."
"Yes, we know. And, according to the tests, she still can."
"Then WHY ISN'T ASHLEY BACK YET?!?" Isabelle demanded, a few hot tears leaking from her eyes, "WHAT ARE WE DOING WRONG?!?"
The doctor pinched the bridge of his nose, "Did it ever occur to you that maybe it wouldn't be an immediate rescue? That it could take a while?"
"It's been nearly 2 years, doctor. How much longer should we have to wait?"
"Again, ma'am, your child is the only living test subject, as well as the most successful. We don't know exactly how all of thi-"
The doctor was cut off by the entrance of a nurse. She said nothing, only walked towards him and put two papers stapled together in front of him. Slowly the doctor picked the tiny packet up and read the lists and charts of words and numbers Isabelle didn't understand. As he read his eyes grew wide, and he quickly flipped to the second page. When he finished that he turned the packet over before going over the two pages again. "This is it?" He asked, glaring at the nurse, who nodded.
"We ran the tests, like you asked. After digging into it, we identified the..." she glanced at Isabelle, who frowned, "Unknown variable. However, after further research, it was found pointless. A zero," she added with another look at Isabelle.
"I see," the doctor said, "Well, we should still keep the data, just in case-"
"One."
The nurse and doctor turned their attention to Isabelle. "Excuse me?" The doctor said, visibly annoyed by the interruption.
"You meant one, right?" Isabelle asked the nurse.
The nurse feigned a smile, "Why would I mean that?"
"Do you think I don't know math?" Isabelle laughed grimly, "Listen, even before I worked as the official computer of this entire operation, I worked in the medical field. Before that I took every college math class I could, so I ran out of classes as a sophomore in high school. I know what I'm talking about. And, if you were calculating everything with zero instead of one, it means you took out an entire number. Here," she held out her hand for the packet.
The nurse's fake smile fell, "I'm sorry, this is classified."
"You want to know what's 'classified' Mrs Grethan?" Isabelle countered, reading the name on the nurse's name tag, "This 'super important secret information,' of yours was provided by me. I'm the one who wrote out exactly what was wrong with my child. And I solved it myself."
She pulled a notecard out of her pocket, hiding the lined side to her chest where the other two couldn't see it, "So, you lied to me," glaring at the doctor, she walked towards the door to the back room, "And I know your tests aren't going to be helping my daughter at all. So I'm going to take her home. Thank you. Good day."
"Hold on," the doctor stood as Isabelle reached the door, "How'd you figure it out without knowing what our tests were going to be?"
Isabelle shrugged, "You left the paper on your desk when you took my daughter to the back."
"So you learned about the experiment fluke?"
It took everything for Isabelle to keep her eyes from widening in shock. "Of course." She lied, pushing the door open.
"Wait!" The doctor exclaimed, again causing Isabelle to pause, "We may not have finished all the tests!"
Isabelle frowned, "If you're just running tests, I don't see why I can't be in there." Before the doctor or nurse could stop her, she pushed the door open and ran through the hall towards her daughter. Turning the corner, she froze, her breath catching in her throat.
There her baby was, screaming and flailing as nurses in hazmat suits approached her with IVs, needles, and other medical supplies. "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?" Isabelle screeched, drawing all attention to her.
One nurse with their hands free came up to her, "Ma'am, you shouldn't be in here. I'm going to have to ask you to leave."
"That my child!!" Isabelle exclaimed, pushing the nurse aside and running to Harper. Scooping her child's head in her arms, she smiled, "It's gonna be ok, baby. Don't worry, mama's here."
"Ma'am you can't be here-"
Isabelle glared at the nurse who spoke, "You were going to hurt my baby. I have every right to be here. You also don't have my permission to EXPERIMENT WITH MY DAUGHTER!!"
"Ma'am, your daughter is an experiment." The doctor stated as he turned the corner.
"Yeah, but she's not some toy for you to play with!" Isabelle cried, lifting Harper off the table.
"I thought you wanted to find Ashley. We were just going to make it easier to do just that."
Isabelle felt her eyes narrow, "You were going to kill her. You think Ashley's gone. For good."
"I didn't say that-"
"Didn't have to. This," she gestured with her free hand around the room, "This says enough. It's because of this weird experiment fluke that my baby's still alive. And you aren't going to touch her."
"And you aren't allowed to take her out of this facility until the tests are complete!" The doctor exclaimed.
"Oh, what, are you going to claim that that was in the fine print? Clearly you've never met someone most people call 'paranoid' because I read the fine print." She grinned, "And I will not be paying that $50 tax you mentioned."
The doctor paused for just long enough for Isabelle to turn and run towards the door with Harper in her arms. Using her hip to push it open, she adjusted her grip on her daughter as she felt around her pocket for her keys. She could hear nurses stomping along behind her, but their baggy suits definitely didn't speed them up. Isabelle stayed far enough ahead of them that they wouldn't be able to follow her if she sped up at all, which she didn't do out of fear of dropping either her keys or her child.
It didn't take long for her to make her way to the front, and as she ran through the lobby she heard the door behind her burst open, but she didn't let that stop her. Again she used her hip to push the front door open and ran to her car. Opening the side door, she quickly strapped Harper into her car seat before shutting the door and getting into the driver's side. Quickly, she put the car in drive as the front door to the lab swung open, and a few nurses got to watch her drive away.
Well, that was chaotic. I decided I wanted another whole chapter for Isabelle, so here you go. Sorry about not updating yesterday, I was talking with my irl friend for a while and ended up running out of time.
Honestly, I don't have much to say about this chapter, so I guess we'll just end here. I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and I'll see y'all later! Bye!!
