Chapter 13: School is a living Nightmare
Harper sat down at her desk with a sigh. Her school was rather small, with only three rooms total for the Juniors and Seniors. Many rooms were reused for different classes, so, while the rooms got boring after a while, at least it made transitions easier.
The boys went to school in a different building nearby. That one was much bigger than Harper's, but it did have everything from 6th grade to 10th, so it made sense. It was just slightly smaller than the third building, which taught kids as old as 5th graders to 3 year olds starting preschool. In general, those buildings were about the size of a two story, normal sized house, while Harper's school was a one story, pretty small one.
"Smaller than I thought it would be," Logan admitted, pulling a chair beside her desk. Harper had asked Logan if he'd like to see their school before he left so that he wouldn't be spending most of the day by himself.
"You get used to it," Harper laughed, feeling underneath her desk for a sticky note.
"Still, you'd think there'd be more kids here."
"Um, all the kids in town go to school here, Logan. No more than 5 total are homeschooled."
"Then where are all the kids we saw on Halloween?"
" Logan, those are elementary school students. They got to school in a different building. "
"....Stop making me feel dumb, Harper!"
Harper laughed again as her fingers brushed past the slip of paper. Quickly, she pulled it off and read what it said.
You sure? Cause there's got to be some scientific way to figure this out.
Harper's smile wavered for only a moment as she read the words, and she quickly erased the message with her pencil before writing her own.
Yes, I'm sure. Don't worry. I'll be fine.
"Who are you writing to?" Logan asked in a weird tone.
Harper shrugged and grinned, "I don't have the slightest idea." Sticking the paper back under the top of the desk, she watched the teacher walk into the room.
"What do you mean? How do you not know?"
" Shh. " Harper quieted him, discreetly gesturing towards the teacher and continuing in a whisper, "The teacher is pretty strict. And I don't know because our entire relationship was caused by an accident."
Harper remembered the day fairly well. Back at the beginning of the school year, she would write out her problems and frustrations on sticky notes and put them on the bottom of her desk. She'd forget about them until the end of the year, and then she'd burn every slip of paper that either wasn't relevant anymore or she'd gotten through. Normally, those piles were gone after she burned them. It was something she'd done ever since they'd arrived, and she'd never been caught.
Until one of her sticky notes was accidentally knocked off the desk.
She had no clue what exactly happened, but, according to whoever was writing to her, their friend had pushed them into the desk and one of the notes accidentally fell. They saw it and asked the teacher if they could switch desks "to help them learn better" while, in reality, they were curious. So, the left a note on the desk as they left, which Harper found, and they actually became pretty good friends over time, even though they'd told each other that they'd keep their identity secret to the other.
"Alright class," the teacher started, her gray bob cut bouncing as she stalked to the front of the room, "I'll bet you're all tired from your weekend. But it's wake up time. You've got only 7 months left to make a future for yourself. None of you should leave this class still living in your parent's basement."
Harper winced. Don't worry, Mrs Crawford. I won't be spending any time there.
Logan must've seen her flinch because he squeezed her hand. She was grateful for the gesture, but she was also worried about how Mrs Crawford would react. Giving him a small smile, she carefully slipped her hand out of his. He didn't exactly look hurt, but some expression flickered across his face before he smiled.
"So," Mrs Crawford continued, "I expect your full attention in this class. Is that clear?"
No one spoke. It seemed to scare Logan a bit, but Mrs Crawford said that was how she knew if people were paying attention or not. You ask them a question, and if they do much as cough, they aren't listening. Which is how many people got away with sleeping in class without getting in trouble.
"Thank you. Now. Turn to page 893 in your textbooks."

Isabelle woke up to the sound of screaming. At first, she thought it was Bailey, but then she saw the little girl standing in the doorway, scared. Another scream shook the house.
Harper.
Throwing off the blankets, Isabelle ran across the hall to her daughter's room. Harper was screaming and crying, something she never did. Quickly, she scooped the girl up in her arms, slowly rocking her in her arms. This tactic never worked with Bailey, but it did calm Harper down a bit. "Shh," Isabelle hushed her as she walked, "It's okay baby. It's okay."
Harper stopped screaming, but she was still crying. Softly, Isabelle hummed "You are my Sunshine," a song she had loved as a little kid. Eventually, even Harper's crying stopped. Isabelle sighed in relief and brought Harper with her back to her room.
Bailey was still standing in the doorway when she came back. "Is Harper okay?" She asked quietly .
"Yes honey." Isabelle assured her, "I'm sure she just had a nightmare." Bailey seemed comforted by that thought, as she smiled and walked back to her room. Isabelle sighed again and looked back at Harper. The toddler was asleep again, her head pressed against her mother's chest.
Trying not to shake Harper too much, Isabelle grabbed her phone. She held it away from her daughter's face as she texted the lab, something she hadn't done in months.
Yeah, we may need another meeting.
Guys. I tried. Really. Part of me is upset that I didn't get anything written on Wednesday until now, the other part is just happy I got something done today. I have had one of those days where you don't want to do anything but sit, eat, and do absolutely nothing, but I still got something written! So, I'm pretty proud of me, at least.
So, we have a random person talking to Harper through sticky notes. Honestly, that might be one of the less weird things we've seen so far. What do you think will happen with them? I think I'm just getting overly excited for this story, which took way to long to happen.
Well, I think that's all for now. I hope you enjoyed this chapter, and I'll see y'all later! Bye!
