Chapter 14 || The Past
"You don’t marry someone you can live with. You marry the person who you cannot live without." Unknown.
Ricardo Ramirez's P.O.V
The silence in the room was unnerving. I could hear the clock tick ever so slowly even though the drumming of my heart was so loud in my ears. Sitting in his presence could make any man weak in the knees. The truths I have come to unravel these past week, was enough to make me divorce my wife and go into hiding. But what sort of man would I be, if I leave my wife whilst she is with my child? Not to even talk of the death trap I would be walking into by leaving her.
The truth was choking me. After 10 years of marriage, it takes a debt unpaid to reveal the truth about the woman I married. The daughter of no one else but the drug lord himself, Antonio Garcia. The leader of the Dark Knight Cartel.
"Ricardo Ramirez, son of Pedro Ramirez. Aged 35, expecting his first child with my daughter. Am I correct?" I swallowed nervously, gripping the edge of the seat. You could never tell what was inside that head of his. He was a total nut case from the rumours I've heard. Being in the presence of the devil was more comfortable compared to him.
"Y-yes s-sir." He was toying with the dagger in his hands. He had smooth tan skin just like his daughter. Except, there was a scar across his right eye and a black patch on the left.
"Don't. You. Stutter. In. My. Presence. Its ticks me off." I shakily nodded and he laughed. I got confused as to his weird behaviour. Suddenly he went quite again and looked at me with a burning intensity.
"I could kill you in a snap," he snapped his fingers and a bullet flew past my face. I suddenly went pale and he smirked seeing my reaction. I could feel the wetness pooling in my pants. Shit.
"You stutter and pee in your pants," he scoffed. "I could question my daughter's choice of men. I don't know what she sees in you because I can tell you are not man enough for her."
I dared not say anything in front of him. Who knows what else could fly past me if he snapped his fingers again. He could get me this time.
"I smell your fear of me. You are practically reeking of it. But don't worry, even though I love to add your pretty head to my collection," he pointed above him. My eyes widened when he grabbed the curtain and pulled it down. Different collection of heads, graced his wall. They were all encased in golden cases with their names and their crime written underneath. "But my daughter would kill me if I did."
To think his weak spot would be his own daughter. He must love her to death if am still alive.
"Let's get to business shall we? Tell me how you got into this shit. Don't leave a fucking detail out and don't stutter." He said firmly.
Don't stutter.
Don't stutter.
Don't Stutter.
Taking a deep breath, I looked him square in the face.
"I took money from Alberto to start a business after I got fired from my former job. He made me sign a contract. That if I couldn't get the money paid in three months, my first daughter would have to marry his son. It was weird, but I thought I could make the money in three months and I did. But the night I wanted to give him his money, I got robbed of everything. I went back to him, to get him to extend the time, but a deal was a deal and I had to adhere to it. I never told Fernanda about the it, but she overheard us in my office and she freaked out when she got to know and demanded I come and see you. She wouldn't tell me why but I forced it out her and she told me everything." I let go of the breath I was holding.
"You forced it out of her. Did you dare hit--No! I would never hit my wife." My eyes widened when I realised what I did. I cut him off. I interrupted Antonio Garcia and am still alive.
"So you had some balls all along. That's good. And it's good you didn't hit her. I would have surely chopped those hands off." He stood up and came behind me. He started massaging my shoulders and I froze at the spot. What is he doing?
"Listen carefully." I felt his breath on my skin as he whispered. "Antonio is only alive because my father couldn't kill him after he betrayed us. The secret code of the Dark Knight Cartel is, regardless of the gender, the first borne are to rule the Cartel. So you better pray that my daughter gives birth to a son."
"Its a girl." I whispered lowly.
He stopped massaging me, and gripped my shoulders tightly.
"How do you know?"
"She did a scan. They were able to tell the gender of the baby. That's why she got worried."
"Antonio knew what he was doing all along. He is up to something. You guys need to vanish. You need to stay low until I get a grip on things. Antonio can't get a hold of the heir to my empire."
"What do you suggest?"
"You die."

I finally understood what Antonio said when he meant we die.
We were going to fake our death. I rushed home to get all that we were going to need.
First, Antonio was going to have us undergo minor plastic surgery to get us new looks. Then, were were going to change our names. I was scared out of my mind. I never knew that Alberto, our town mayor, could be the leader of a Cartel. We walked right into a rivalry and now I have to live the rest of my life as a lie.
"Mon amie," My wife stood beside the door, rubbing her little protruding belly. She was worried about us and the mess I got myself into. If I knew earlier on who she truly was, I would have been a bit careful with who I deal it.
"Am sorry." Few tears streaked down her cheek. "Am sorry I couldn't tell you the truth. It was important for my father's identity to be safe. I didn't have any choice..." I gently cupped her cheeks in my palms and gave her a gentle kiss on the lips.
"Its okay. I understand. We'll get through this together." I wiped her tears away, kissed her forehead and proceeded to pack the rest of our things. When everything was done, Antonio came to get us himself. It was night when we went out of the house.
Taking a last glance at the house, my heart skipped. Behind the trees, was a shadow of someone. Even though my gut instinct made me think it could have been Alberto, I shrugged it off. Hoping it was one of Antonio's men instead. I should have told Antonio then, but I didn't and that was my biggest mistake.
✏Author's Note.
