My essay:
It is believed that education can tackle the problem of people's health deterioration caused by the excessive consumption of fast food. While this is valid to a certain extent, I content that this educational policy is not a viable measure.
It is understandable why people advocate the idea of enlightening everyone about junk food to promote public health. The key rationale is that this method can help broaden people's nutrition-related knowledge and awareness. By being given the information the nutrient composition of each fast food product and the harmful consequences of overeating them, consumers would be more cautious the next time they choose their food. As a result, people may adopt a healthier lifestyle, and the risk of debilitating illnesses such as obesity, diabetes and cardiac arrest. Vietnam perfectly exemplifies this. After the nutrition education program was run in thousands of schools throughout the country, students have cultivated a life-time habit of restricting junk food intake.
However, I believe the aforementioned method will produce meager results. Nowadays the hectic and stressful life with huge piles of work is driving people to opt for fast food instead of healthy food, which cannot be addressed by education. For example, a large number of intellectual officers with profound nutrient knowledge are in favor of junk food because of its convenience and portable manner. Instead, governments should adopt superior approaches, one of which is levying higher tariffs on fast food. This expense would be passed to consumers in the form of higher prices, which can bring forth a quicker decline in the consumption of junk food in comparison with education. The effect of this policy would be even more dramatic in developing countries, where consumers are generally price-conscious.
In conclusion, while there are reasons to support educating people about junk food to improve public health, I believe the solution outlined above is a better way to curb the problem.
