Chapter 5 - Liza

After it was all said and done, it took about twenty minutes to get everything together. Trina had insisted on taking Trevor's stuff, too, which took a little bit. But, in the end, we were all safely in the van and Trina began giving me directions. When I got to the end of the street that connected to a highway, two police cars turned off, heading towards the house we'd just left.

I looked at Trina and Ade, hunkered down in the back with our stuff. They were oblivious to what I'd seen. "We got out just in time, looks like," I informed them casually as I got on the highway. "A couple of cop cars are heading that way." Their eyes widened and they looked at each other. "Do you think we should be worried?"

We rode in silence for a few moments. "Not yet," Ade said. "We need to get Trevor before they start looking for him."

"We don't even know if they found our cars yet," Trina pointed out.

"You're the one who took his stuff," Ade pointed out.

"Because it's only a matter of time," she said breezily.

I could almost hear Ade roll his eyes. "You like him. Admit it."

I glanced in the mirror. Trina's eyes were narrowed and she was sitting up straight. "I don't know what you're talking about," she said, ice in her voice.

"You have a crush on him."

"I do not!" she practically shouted.

"How about I turn on the radio?" I asked, hoping to distract them from the idiotic argument I felt brewing. Some song began playing through the junk speakers when I hit the button. I didn't even care what it was.

"Then why else would you insist on cooking for him, pack his stuff for him, help him-"

"Enough!" Trina shouted as the tune for the radio news began playing.

"Shh!" I hissed, turning the radio up until I could feel the woman's voice in my feet as she outlined the drama going on with Vitality, following it up with news that the getaway car had been found in a parking garage and an interview with the woman Trevor had given the ticket to when we were leaving, saying she hadn't known at the time who we were but if she had she would have called the police. It was followed by the descriptions of both Ade and Trevor and a description of Trevor's car.

"Told you," Trina gloated to Ade.

This was going to be a long ride.

After a couple of moments of silence, I heard Trina telling Trevor to go somewhere and we'd pick him up. She then began directing me to what turned out to be a grocery store of some kind. We sat and waited, backed up to the woods edging the lot. I couldn't see anyone anywhere near us. After a few minutes the back doors opened abruptly, making me jump.

Trevor jumped in, closed the doors, and slumped against the side of the van. "We going to the house now?" I asked.

"I need to grab my stuff first," Trevor said.

Trina sheepishly pointed at the bags they'd piled on one side. "I already did that, actually," she said. It was the first time I'd ever heard her sound bashful. Judging by the way Trevor smiled at her then, I don't think she had anything to worry about, to be honest.

---

I never really gave it any thought before, but moving is hard. Like, moving from one house to another. We weren't even doing it properly, but it was tedious. Trina brought equipment that needed to be set up a certain way, we split up into two of the three bedrooms, leaving one for Adam and Sheila, as we were sure they'd be coming eventually, and trying to put in an order for food via email for Adam to drop off. That was nothing compared to moving your entire life to an unfamiliar building and unfamiliar surroundings.

In a way, I was glad I wasn't doing any of the work moving apartments, but at the same time I felt so bad for making Fiona do all of it. It really made me realize just how much she does. I don't think I could manage without her sometimes. From cooking to doing all of this other stuff, she's amazing. I missed her despite everything else going on.

Once Trina got the internet router working and the WiFi up, I pulled my laptop out of my bag and opened up Vitality. I laughed at the error page that came up. "They finally closed my account," I told Trina.

She smirked and checked her account. "Me too. They probably did that to all of us. In any case, who do they think they're fooling? Your video has been seen by millions of people and probably is up on several channels being viewed by even more people."

I nodded. It made me both excited and scared to think about. I wasn't sure which of those I felt more, but over both of those, I felt bad. I'd literally connived my way into a place I didn't belong and took information that didn't belong to me, and on top of all that, nothing came of it besides a few extra mentions of my name and being banned from Vitality's website.

Trying to change the trajectory of my thoughts, I closed my web browser and pulled up the large text file Trina took from Shawn's computer and began scrolling without seeing anything. It was a blur of information that felt like too much to take in at the moment, even if I had read the whole thing before.

A minute of blank staring later, someone's putting a warm mug in my hand and sitting next to me on the sofa. Ade smiles at me when I look up. "Just thought you'd like a break," he says in a quiet voice.

I glance around and notice Trina's gone. That's when I hear the voices coming from the kitchen. "I would, thanks," I say, taking the mug fully.

"So, how's it going?"

I shrug. "If I'm honest, it's going slower than I'd like for it to, but I suppose it can't exactly be helped."

He nods, glancing at my screen. "What are you looking for, exactly?"

"Pieces to a puzzle. Evidence. Something that places Vitality where and when Victoria went missing, and proof it was malicious. I got everything that mentioned her name, so hopefully, if there's anything, we have it."

Ade looks me thoughtfully. "What if they only mentioned her last name?"

My eyes widen. It was something I hadn't even thought of. "Then it's not here," I say slowly as my mind switches into work mode. "I need to talk to Trina." I begin to slide my laptop off my lap, but Ade stops me.

He jerks his head at the kitchen. "She's talking to Trevor right now and I think things are going good. She's been working towards this for months. Let her have her moment."

I sigh. This was very important, but I could see it from her side, too. "Okay, fine." I bite my lip and let the silence linger until it starts to feel awkward. "I need to find out how far along she is with the cards. She said she was going to reprogram them," I explain.

Ade nods and his expression is very attentive to what I'm saying. "That's not really hard to do if you have the equipment and the skills. Why do you need them?"

"Kind of like a backup idea. Like, if we missed something, or if we need more info, or whatever, we can get back in with them."

"Wouldn't the staff be on high alert for you two? I mean, you're all over the news."

I nod. "True, but there are ways around being recognized." We sit in silence for a moment. "What did you do before you started hanging out with Trevor and Trina?"

"I was a guard at a prison for a while, and before that I was a guard at the mall. Above all, I'm a hacker of sorts. I don't steal information or anything like that, but I do help people find things. I was a small-time detective that specialized in cyber crimes, someone the police talked to when they hit a dead end. Still am." His eyes gleam and he looks smug.

"How did you meet Trina?"

He shrugs, turning to me a little bit. "Trev and I go back to middle school, and Trina and I go back to high school. Trev and I were put in the same advanced classes in middle school, and then in high school we were in several classes with Trina. We were all in AP everything, so we kind of just skimmed college. By the time it was all said and done, we'd all graduated as valedictorians at fifteen and went to the local college together. We're pretty tight."

I give him a small smile, feeling a small pang for the friends I've left behind. "I bet."

He fully turns to me now, intrigued by my reaction. "Do you have someone like that?"

I fight to keep the smile in place. "Kyle and Fiona. Kyle and I have been friends since we started school, but Fiona and I have been living together for a couple of years now. We're best friends, too. Her and Kyle are friends, too, but they don't really know each other that well and get on the other's nerves frequently."

Ade nods. "What are they like?"

I smile to myself. "Kyle's opinionated like me, but he's not what he tries to come across as. He's a gentle soul who loves to laugh and to make others laugh. He doesn't care easy, but when he does, he's a force. He's loyal to a fault. Fiona is a force, too. She's independent, but she's a great friend, too. She loves helping people and telling people how to improve. She's a book critic, but refuses to be an editor even though she's perfect for the job. When I first moved in with her, I had no idea how to do most things, so she showed me." My smile turns sad, almost before I realize I let it. "They're probably both really worried about me right now."

Ade hesitantly reaches out to me when I start tearing up and pulls me to him. I go willingly, my head on his chest, listening to his heartbeat and dampening his shirt without really meaning to. I just let my tears fall as they want, surprise bleeding through the sad at how natural this feels and how good he smells. It's not something I'd ever thought before, but it felt right. I slowly wrap my own arms around him and feel his chin rest on my head.

Definitely. This definitely feels right.

---

"Ade made a good point," I said to Trina, who was now sitting on the couch by me. She was still a little surprised after walking in and finding me, eyes red-rimmed and wet, being hugged by Ade, who was sporting a damp spot on his shirt, so it took her a moment to realize what I'd said.

"What's that?" she asked, glancing at me before looking back at her laptop.

"There's a possibility I didn't get everything."

Trina raised an eyebrow, but didn't look away from her laptop. "That kind of goes without saying, Liz. I mean, there's probably stuff locked away on another server. I doubt the Knights would be so careless as to leave evidence on a server that can be accessed by anyone."

Her words made sense, so I nodded and settled back into the sofa. I scrolled down to the part that's mainly references. "Something's been bothering me, though." I turned my laptop towards her. "What are these for?"

She squinted at my screen. "Um, I'm gonna guess they're references."

"But to what?"

Her eyes slowly met mine. "Liza," she said hesitantly.

"You're thinking it too, aren't you?"

"The newspapers," she said faintly.

I nodded. "I knew Shawn had them up there for a reason," I told her.

"We need to go back - tomorrow."
