Chapter 1 - Kyle
I had no idea what I was in for when I made Liza's video public. I waited until it had a thousand views - which took less than a minute - to watch it. When I did, I knew we were in deep, deep trouble. Especially if what she said was true.
"Kyle?" my roommate said. "You okay, man? You kinda look like you saw a ghost or something." I didn't respond. I couldn't. Davis got off his bed and walked over to where I was sitting on the couch with my laptop. He grabbed it and unplugged my headphones. "Your girlfriend?" he asked as he glanced up at me. He restarted the video and soon his eyes were wide and his jaw dropped as it hit him.
Before he could say anything, I said, "The implications are huge." He nodded. I was immediately worried. Especially when I glanced up at the TV news and saw the Vitality building. I turned up the volume after a brief hunt for the remote.
"... suspect named in this breach is Liza Mercy, best known for her internet series He Said She Said," the reporter droned on. They played a clip of one of our videos. "If you see her, police are asking that you contact them right away."
I hopped up and ran to get my phone out of my bedroom. There were three missed calls, but not one call from Liz. I pulled up our text conversations and shot one off to her. Are you okay?
Someone pounded on our door followed shortly by a call of, "Police! Open up!" I hurried to the door, trying to take a few deep breaths. Davis was halfway there, but I jumped in front of him to open the door. Two detectives were standing on the other side.
"Yes?" I asked, panting slightly.
"We're looking for Kyle Matthews. We just have a few questions to ask him," said the woman.
"I'm Kyle. Would you like to step inside?" I moved out of the way. They walked past me and into the apartment. "Can we get you anything?"
They smiled at me and declined my offer. The man pulled out a small notepad and a pen. "I'm Special Detective Hardin and this is my partner, Special Detective O'Shay. How are you two related?" he asked.
I glanced at Dave. "We're best friends and roommates. We've lived together for a couple of years now."
Detective Hardin nodded. "Do you both know Liza?"
Dave shrugged. "I've met her a few times, but we're not friends. We don't really know each other at all."
The detective nodded. "What's your name?"
"Davis King."
A few more notes. "So, Mr. Matthews, how do you know Miss Mercy?"
"We grew up together, basically. We've known each other since kindergarten."
"Was she acting differently leading up to today?"
I rubbed the back of my neck. "As far as I could tell, she was acting a little off last night, but it's nothing she doesn't normally do when she's wanting to surprise me with something, so that's all I thought it was. She acted the same way when she was planning our show before she asked me to do it with her."
Detective Hardin nodded and jotted something else down. "So nothing even hinted at being out of the ordinary?" I shook my head. "Do you know where she went?"
I furrowed my brow. She didn't even tell me the address of where she'd been staying, so I had no idea where exactly she'd been for the last week and a half. "Have you tried asking Shawn?"
The detective's gaze snapped up to mine with a strangely intense look. "Who's Shawn?"
I shrugged, surprised they didn't know. "In Dallas. She was staying with him and his sister."
"What's his last name?"
"I..." My eyes widened slightly as I realized. "I don't know, sir."
"How do you know she was staying with him?"
"Because I got her to tell me. She knows I worry about her."
Detective O'Shay raised an eyebrow. "So she does this type of thing a lot?"
I shook my head vehemently. "Never! She's never so much as got a speeding ticket that I know of."
Detective Hardin glanced up at me. "Do you have any idea where she would have gone? Does she know anyone else in the area?"
"Here, just me, Davis, and her roommate, Fiona Ricci. In Dallas, no. If she hasn't gone to be with Fiona, then I don't know where she is. She has other friends, but I don't know them."
He nodded and closed his notebook. "That's all for now. Of course, you can't leave town just in case we need to talk to you again until this is resolved. Thank you for your cooperation. Have a good day, Mr. Matthews." He glanced at Dave. "You, too, Mr. King."
I opened the door for them, closing and locking it once they were gone. "This is bad," Dave said, running his fingers through his hair. "What are you going to do?"
"I have no idea." I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to go to bed now and hope this was all a bad dream. But I couldn't do that. What could I do? I began pacing between the front door and my bedroom door. After a couple trips, I pulled out my phone. Fiona was in Memphis already, surely, but maybe she would know something I didn't. After all, she lived with Liz and I didn't.
It barely took one ring before she picked up. "Do you know anything?" she asked breathlessly. I could already tell she'd worked herself into one of the tizzies Liz told me about. "Is she okay?"
"Calm down, Fiona. I don't where she is. I was actually calling you to see if you knew anything, but I guess you don't."
She took a couple of deep breaths. "Kyle, never tell someone to 'calm down'. That never works and sometimes makes whatever it is worse." I rolled my eyes. "Anyway, no, I don't. The police called me a few minutes ago. Have they talked to you yet?"
"They just left, actually. Hey, Fiona, do you know where she was actually staying? Like, maybe the address?"
A beat or two of silence. "She never told you?"
I shook my head before remembering she couldn't see me. "Nope. She didn't really want to tell me she was going anywhere in the first place." Not that I could blame her, really. She knows how I feel about her.
"Oh, right. Um, no, she didn't. I never really asked, though. I kind of just accepted her judgment on everything. She was always good at that sort of thing. I don't know what they did to make her want to do this."
I shook my head, thinking back to a conversation we'd had during a debate. "I don't think they had to do much to convince her."
Silence. Then, "What do you mean?"
Davis raised an eyebrow at me, so I walked into my bedroom and shut the door. "Think about it. Our last debate was about Vitality. It felt too easy, like she let me win. She's never given up that easily on a debate. At the time I thought it was just because I pushed her to do it and made her take the side against it, but now I'm wondering."
Fiona was quiet for a minute. "So, you think she was already anti-Vitality?"
I rubbed my neck as I sat on my bed. "I'm saying I think it was possible, but it doesn't really make much sense. I mean, it's what her life was literally built around."
"Was?"
"I don't think they're going to let her back onto the website," I said, rolling my eyes. "After all, she basically said that she was going to catch them."
"Wait - what are you talking about?"
"The video."
"What video?"
"If it hasn't been taken down yet, go to our channel. If you can't find it, it's probably everywhere by now. She told our followers to copy it and post it as much as possible, to spread it." There was a dull thud as, I presume, she dropped her phone. I waited for about two minutes.
"What was she thinking?" Fiona suddenly screeched in my ear.
"Apparently that there's something there that no one else is seeing but her and whoever she's in Dallas with." I sighed and rubbed my eyes. Now that the initial panic was wearing off, I was more and more worried about her. What if something bad happens to her? What if she gets caught?
"We need to find them."
My hand stilled. "We?"
"Yes, we. I'm not letting you go off and find her by yourself. I'm her other best friend! We're in this together."
I shook my head as I laughed a little, humorlessly. "Fine. I wasn't planning on being her 'knight in shining armor' anyway. She's not the type to take kindly to people trying to save her, you know? I just want to check on her."
"Right," Fiona said knowingly. I felt my face turn bright red. She'd told me before she knew how I felt about Liza.
I'd be lying if I said that wasn't my main motivation for finding her.
I was in love with Liza.
