Chapter 9: Square One

Adrien sat at his desk, trying to concentrate on his homework. He just couldn't focus. Kagami was a headache at the moment, Marinette wasn't replying to any of his text messages, and right after he had confessed his love for her and they had almost kissed.

He wanted to know what she was thinking, she couldn't have hated him that bad if she had almost kissed him. If Kagami hadn't ruined everything maybe he'd know but of course, he was a magnet for bad luck. At times like this, he wished his mother was here.

She always knew when something was wrong. She always gave him advice. Ever since she passed away it felt like she took everything with her. And then, he met Marinette. It was like he could feel again, he'd never forget the moment he first laid eyes on her.

His father was no help, and as much as Natalie cared for him she had to remain professional. He couldn't go to her for advice, he couldn't go to anyone. Perhaps he was just used to it, but he was tired of being used to it. He was tired of being lonely.

Adrien fell flaccid across his bed, his eyebrows narrowing. He remembered how real his emotions were for Marinette, it hurt him. He genuinely felt hurt, she wouldn't respond to his texts or answer his calls, he had never felt like such a burden.

He had liked her for so long. She couldn't avoid him forever, but the thought of her still trying to avoid him... It just hurt. It sent an ache in his chest and his eyes began to burn. She almost kissed him, she wouldn't have done that unless she felt something for him. She had to feel something for him.

Marinette headed downstairs to help her parents with the bakery, every Sunday she would always help. Usually the customers smile or reaction to her parents baked goods always made her feel better. But today all she could think about was Adrien.

She was so pathetic, Adrien was way out of her league. What was she thinking?

The bell to the bakery door rang, and Marinette headed to the counter to greet the customer. Her eyes widened as she saw the girl from the party. Great... "Marinette was it?" Kagami sounded a lot more approachable than she did at the party.

Like her voice had softened, basically like she didn't hate her as much. "Um, yeah. What would you like?" Marinette asked. Kagami shook her head, "I'm not here to buy sweets Marinette. I'm here to warn you." Well this should be good.

"Adrien isn't who you think he is. I didn't mean to be so rude at the party, but I meant to scare you away. You shouldn't hang around Adrien, he's a womanizer." Marinette narrowed her eyebrows, she didn't trust Kagami. "Why should I believe you?"

"Because he played me... And I felt like a fool after. The moment he had gotten bored of me he dropped me. Which he's done to so many other girls and... I don't want you to be one of them Marinette." Kagami said, "It hurt so much when he left me... I felt so stupid and embarrassed."

Marinette was skeptical about trusting Kagami, she didn't have any proof. "I can't trust you Kagami, Adrien seems like a really nice guy and-" Kagami interrupted her, "That's what I thought too before he played me. Look the only reason I was rude at the party was to make sure you didn't get yourself a broken heart." Kagami said, turning dramatically.

She placed her hand on her chest, looking at the floor. She thought that if she could scare Marinette away Adrien would run straight back to her. So that was exactly what she planned to do. She didn't like to think of herself as a liar, she wasn't.

But if this was what it took to get Adrien back, she'd take her chances. Marinette seemed like an annoying, selfish little brat anyways. "You seem like a sweet, selfless, girl Marinette. Don't make the same mistake I did... For your own sake." Kagami turned one last time, narrowing her eyebrows to make it seem like she was actually hurt.

Adrien was perfect. They were so similar and they were simply made for each other, she wasn't going to let some girl get in the way of that. Adrien was hers, and only hers. She walked out of the Dupain-Cheng bakery, leaving behind a confused Marinette.

Was what Kagami said true? Marinette was never one to jump to conclusions, but Kagami really did seem like she was telling the truth. Adrien could basically have any girl he wanted, of course he'd known he could take advantage of her.

She felt her eyes water as everything that had happened with Adrien seemed to crumble. She should've listened to her brain and not her heart. It was only a matter of time before he could get bored of her. She wouldn't let that happen, Adrien was her enemy.

And enemies don't trust each other...

Marinette walked up the steps to the entrance of the school, remembering how her and Adrien had sat there and how she kissed his cheek for giving her his jacket. She had to put that in the past, she couldn't fall in love with someone like Adrien.

Kagami told her what he was like, he was just going to manipulate her. She told her how he played with a girls feelings whenever he was bored enough. Kagami had said she had gone through it before, and she didn't want the same to happen to her.

"Hey, blue. Can we talk?"

She froze as she saw Adrien step right in front of her, she looked up at his face. Those eyes, why did it look like he cared so much? Those eyes could never hide so much behind them. No, she couldnt listen to her heart. "Out of my way, Agreste." Marinette said walking around him and heading to the classroom.

Adrien felt his heart drop, what did he do so wrong? He turned to watch her walk away, she didn't look back. It looks like they were back to Square One...
