Chapter 3: The Elephant Has Powers! Did It Also Join The Secret Club?

"When exactly are the police coming?" Pay asked from up top. "It's only a matter of time."

"Three minutes max," Trivia reported from her phone. Noticing the night shift workers standing in front of her for the first time, she slipped her phone into her pocket.

By now, I was ninety-nine point nine percent chance Lemonhead had super hearing. I mean, how else could she have heard Pay from all the way up there, with all the sirens? Pay wasn't even talking loudly!

But seriously, how come everyone all of a sudden got super hearing? I was the only person who didn't have it! Was there some kind of secret club Trivia and Pay had to join, to get their super powers? Where could I join? I want powers!

"All of that work picking the locks," Pay grumbled to himself. "Only for you to smash the dome in pieces."

"I didn't do it!" I protested. "It was the elephant!"

"Just get the elephant out of here!" Lemonhead yelled from the room.

Yup. There was definitely a secret club that gave out super powers to people who joined it.

I looked at the area where the rope holding the elephant was attached to my wire. Due to the weight of the elephant, the rope was starting to get untied. Turning to the rooftops, I realized I couldn't lift the elephant all the way up there.

The statue would probably tip over my hand and smash into a billion pieces on the ground. Or even worse, shatter into a bunch of elephant statue molecules.

"I have a plan!" I hollered to Trivia, my grip tightening on the part where the rope holding the elephant connected to my wire.

"That would have been helpful, I don't know, FIFTEEN HOURS AGO?" Trivia yelled back.

"But we weren't here fifteen hours ago, Lemonhead. We came in here, about-"

"Be quiet Target," Trivia hissed. She gestured to the two shadow people who were on their phones, frantically tapping the touch screen. Probably dialing 911. Everyone's always calling 911 when we're here breaking into places.

I pushed off the ledge and started to swing. The elephant followed me.

Pay turned around, looking at me like I just sprouted horns. Did I? There was no mirror around here, so I couldn't check. But I'll worry about the maybe-horns growing out of my head later. Instead, he just went back to minding his own business.

"What are you..." Pay started, then seemed to catch on. Except he didn't look happy. He just looked at me if I was crazy, an expression I'm always getting from people.

Pretty soon, the elephant started to fly with me. Again.

The knots holding the rope and wire together started to slowly unravel. My grip just tightened around that area, which was starting to hurt. At the last minute, when the elephant was swung high enough, I let go of the rope.

The elephant was flying!

But more importantly, my arms weren't hurting anymore! And my hands weren't aching from holding the rope. I was pretty sure I developed blisters from that.

"Look guys! The elephant is flying!" I hollered to everyone.

The shadow-people and Trivia looked up to see the elephant just in time.

It (the elephant) went through the glass dome and landed on the rooftop. The golden elephant statue landed on all its feet with a THUD. The roof shook a little, like it was threatening us it would break. Luckily, it didn't.

That would've been really inconvenient.

Trivia was the first to recover from the glories of the flying elephant. (Or she didn't care about it.) She went off, to either hide or attack the shadow people. I wasn't paying attention to that, since all of my focus was on getting the elephant out of here.

"That's one way to deal with the elephant," Pay muttered under his breath. I don't think I was supposed to hear that, but I did anyway. Does that mean I had super powers as well?

With the elephant already having to be out of the museum, Pay and I tugged the wire to bring us closer to the ceiling. When the pulley couldn't go any higher, we just used our strength to climb the rest of the way out.

Finally, we were on the rooftop.

While Pay took off the belt tied around him connecting him to the wire, I peeked back into the room. The night-shift workers were done calling 911 and now were trying to find Trivia with their flashlights.

Meanwhile, Trivia was avoiding the lights.

"Should we help her?" I asked Pay, who finished taking off his belt. He had kicked it aside the roof.

"We have the elephant, we can just leave her here."

"But didn't the boss who assigned us this mission say that we all had to come back?"

"He said to come back with an elephant. It didn't matter if anyone died."

"Oh. Right, I forgot about that. But who's going to do our makeup and help us distract the police if we don't have Trivia with us?"

"Well, then that's your problem, not mine."

I peeked in again, spotting the night-shift workers with their extra-bright flashlight. They leveled up from walking around to running around. Trivia continued to hide behind the artifacts.

My daggers couldn't have been free thrown from here. Not without breaking any of the other artifacts. But the elephant was up here, so I was good to go, right? That was the only thing Bosses told us not to break.

"Am I allowed to break any of the other artifacts, or did that rule only apply to just the elephant?" I asked Pay.

"Just the elephant," he replied. His makeup was starting to melt off, just like Trivia had said. Could she predict the future now?

Without his Makeup, Pay's deep beige skin tone was showing, along with his freckles. He still had messy brown hair and dark brown eyes. Like the rest of us, he was wearing a stealth suit covered with bits of armor here and there. In the middle of his breastplate, there was a faded yet visible logo of the crowns: A yellow crown with three spikes, each spike having a magenta jewel.

I turned back and looked inside the museum, where a very intense game of hide and seek was occurring. Either way, I was still too far away to aim and throw my daggers, without accidently killing anyone.

I looked at the wire, still tied around my waist. And the pulley the rope was still attached to.

"Hey Pay," I turned towards him. "can you lower me inside?"

A/N:

Two chapters in, and here was have our main character already in trouble.

So, how's Target? I'm genuinely curious, since I had a fun time writing her scenes and dialogues.

Also, I'm with Target in this one: there's a secret super power club that make elephants fly and Trivia and Pay get "powers". I mean how else would they here her from 50 feet in the air? (Or maybe it's a plothole I'm too lazy to fix-)

Well, the next few chapters are going to be fun. You know, escaping, the police coming, etc.

Have a good day/night!
