Chapter 8: Flash Back
BEEP BEEP BEEP!
My eyes fluttered opened, but quickly shut due to the blinding morning light filling the room. I pounded my fist onto the top of my alarm clock to stop the beeping. Remembering that day it was, I quickly shot out of my bed. My eyes met the outfit layer out on the end of my bed. My favorite purple crop top and my black skater skirt. I swiftly changed from my warm pajamas to the planned apparel.
I headed into the bathroom to straighten my dark brown hair. My rule was that hair had to be either really curly or really straight. There was absolutely no in between. My hair was in between. It was curly underneath and wavy on the top, making my hair stick out in the most unnatural places.
After I was finished, I walked back to my white room and sat down at my vanity to start on my makeup. I was going for a subtle yet edgy look, so I applied a neutral colored eyeshadow to my eyelid with a bright white in the corner. To add the edgy look I wanted, I applied winged eyeliner to my top lid, followed my a thick coat of mascara. Of course I applied the usual concealer, bronzer, and blush. I didn't need foundation since my face was mostly free of blemishes, dark spots, pimples, and anything unnatural.
Knowing my parents had planned some sort of surprise, I skipped down the stairs. I was greeted by two smiling faces, both belonging to my parents. My mom's blue-grey eyes lit up like a Christmas tree when she saw me.
"You look absolutely gorgeous my baby!", she beamed as tears welled up in her eyes, "Happy Birthday!"
"Thanks mom!", I smiled back. She engulfed me in a tight 'mom hug'. One that practically crushes your bones and is impossible to escape. I buried my fave into her curly blonde hair, taking in the soothing scent of her perfume.
She let me out of her grasp and I peered back at my dad. His dark brown eyes were usually tired and heavy due to the fact that he goes to work at three in the morning. Since he had taken he day off work, he looked refreshed and new again. His jet black hair had been puffed with hair gel. He had a scenario that he was balding, but he clearly wasn't. I had inherited most of my genetics from him.
He wrapped my in a light, soothing hug, one that my dad was known for. He wasn't exactly one for touching, so he released me after a few seconds. He gazed at the top of my head and smiled, realizing that I was gaining on him. He stopped at look down at my hazel eyes; I knew exactly what he was thinking.
"How old are you today, 10?", he smirked at his own joke.
"No dad I'm 14!", I giggled.
"Breakfast is in the kitchen!", said my mom proudly.
I walked briskly into the kitchen to spot a plate of steaming waffles topped with syrup and strawberries on the counter.
"Thanks mom!" I called to her from the kitchen.
"Anything for my little girl!", cooed my mom.
"Mom, lm 14! I don't think I'm a little girl anymore!", I laughed with a mouthful of waffles.
"Oh baby, you will always be my little girl!"
Suddenly, all the lights had cracked and sizzled, showing no signs of illumination. The warmth of the house was replaced with a chilling wind. My waffles turned an icy blue and were covered in a thin layer of frost. I turned to my mom and dad. They were kneeling on the frosted carpet, huddled together with horrified looks on their faces.
The chilling winds had been blowing with such a speed that an icy tornado had formed. The tornado had grown to an immense size, and was so powerful I had to grip the table to stay on my feet. From the tornado, a bolt of icy blue lightning erupted and struck me in the chest. Not vanishing, the bolt raised me up into the air. Light erupted from my eyes, making me scream. The palms of my hands bursted with blue light, making me shriek louder. I could feel the icy chill enter my body, filling my bloodstream. The ice ran through my veins, freezing my whole body. My clothes turned multiple shades of blue before stopping at the lightest one possible. They became ripped and tattered, leaving much of my skin exposed. My skin became littered with frosty crystals and icy blue symbols. My fingertips were almost fully frozen before the bolt and tornado disappeared, leaving the air crisp and silent.
I frantically looked across the room to try and spot my parents. I found them huddled in the farthest corner of the room. Their once glossy hair had been peppered with frost crystals and their clothes had been covered in a thin layer of snow. And their faces... I will never forget the looks on their faces. Pure horror filled their eyes, and every tear that fell down my mom's cheek turned to ice.
"Mom..", I whimpered. She looked away from me. My dad whispered something in her ear.
They both stood up from the corner, snow falling off their clothes. They walked towards my crippled body, gathering their belongings as they went. When they reached me, they both knelt down to my eye level.
"If anything happens to you, you know what to do", My dad says looking over my shoulder at the loose floorboard. I immediately knew what he meant.
"You're leaving me?", a tear left my eye, but immediately froze, falling off my already frosted skin.
"We have to baby, trust me, it's not easy for us to do this. It's just not safe for us anymore.", my mom's eyes welled up with tears.
"Please! Don't go!", I cried harder, but every tear suffered the same fate.
"We love you so much Safia...", My mom said reaching her hand out to touch my face, but she flinched and retracted her arm.
"Always remember that...", my dad said blankly.
And with that, they left our destroyed house.
I was alone...
