VI
SIX; GRANDPA CHARLIE
"I don't like this." Jasper shook his head for the fifth time. "I should be there with you."
Cassadee gave her husband an annoyed look. "It's just my father."
"A lot could happen between here and there." Jasper said, smiling down at Eden and stroking her curly blonde hair, earning a coo from the baby. "See? Eden wants me to be there. I haven't been away from her since she was born."
"She was born a week ago." Cassadee deadpanned before buckling Eden into her car seat. "She's barely been out of the house."
"Maybe it's not the best idea to go." Jasper suggested with a shrug. "You've been anxious ever since you agreed to go over to there."
"I've been anxious because I have no idea how to explain how I have a baby that definitely does not look like a newborn." Cassadee retorted.
"Then go and leave Eden. Charlie doesn't need to know about her yet."
Cassadee shook her head. "It's only going to get harder to explain as time goes on, especially at the rate she's growing." She sighed and ran her hands through her hair. "It has to happen now, Jazz. I want Eden to know her grandfather and he deserves to know her."
"You don't need to do this alone." Jasper pointed out, grabbing his wife's hands and squeezing them. "We're a team, remember?"
The brunette smiled at the statement. "Actually, I should do this alone. Dad's not as laidback with you around." Cassadee's smile disappeared when she looked into Jasper's eyes. "You need to feed."
"I'm fine."
"You'll be fine until there's blood." Cassadee retorted before looking at her daughter, her mood instantly becoming happy when she saw the blonde happily playing with the teddy bear in her small hands. "What do you think, sweet pea? Do you think Daddy should feed?"
Eden cooed happily at her mother, although Cassadee it was just because Eden almost always made a happy baby noise whenever she was around, she decided to use it as an advantage. "See, your daughter wants you to feed."
Jasper sighed in defeat. "Fine, but I'm coming over after."
"Please don't." Cassadee said before finally getting into the car and starting it before rolling down the window. "I can deal with my father just fine by myself." She closed the window and drove away before Jasper could argue anymore. "I really hope you aren't as stubborn as us, Eden." Cassadee told her daughter, only getting a small giggle in return. "Otherwise you are going to be a nightmare as you get older."
It didn't take long to get to her old house, especially considering the fact that she was going almost three times the speed limit. For someone who had a cop as a parent Cassadee didn't have any problems breaking the law.
Once she pulled up to the house Charlie was outside almost instantly as Cassadee turned around and faced her daughter. "Time to meet the most important man in my life, don't tell Daddy though." She said before getting out of the car.
"What is that?" Charlie asked as soon as he saw Eden move in the backseat.
"Hello to you, too." Cassadee said before opening the door and unbuckling the baby from her car seat. "And this would be a baby, Daddio."
"I know it's a baby but what is she doing in your car?"
Eden tucked her head into Cassadee's neck as soon as the brunette picked her up. "If I tell you, do you swear not to freak out?" Cassadee asked her father once she closed the car door and faced him.
Charlie shook his head, finally taking his eyes off the baby to look at his daughter. "You can't start a conversation off like that and expect me not to freak out."
"You're definitely gonna want to sit down for this." The Equalizer told Charlie, using her free arm to turn him around and push him toward the house.
"If you want to give me a heart attack you are doing a great job so far." Charlie retorted, going back into the house nonetheless and closing the door behind Cassadee once she walked in. He sat down on the couch and looked at his daughter expectantly. "Now would you please tell me what the hell is going on?"
"Do you swear not to get mad?"
"Cassadee Nicole—"
"Okay!" The brunette almost shouted before remembering the baby in her arms. "I can't exactly tell you how but—" Cassadee was cut off by a knock at the door, cursing under her breath when she saw Jasper through the glass. She begrudgingly went and opened the door, blocking Jasper from entering. "What the hell are you doing here?!"
The blond shrugged. "I fed, I figured I should be here. Eden is my daughter and Charlie is my family now, too."
"Your eyes say otherwise." Cassadee glared into her husband's almost black eyes, making sure her voice was low enough that only he would hear. "If you ever lie to me again I will slap you so hard your head will spin." She threatened, tightening her grip on Eden to calm herself down. Cassadee wasn't mad at the fact that Jasper showed up, she was mad at the fact that he didn't feed like he said he would and that he didn't seem to trust her enough to be alone with their daughter. "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't be mad at you right now."
"Because I helped you create the perfect little bundle of joy in your arms?" Jasper questioned with a sheepish smile.
Cassadee gave Jasper an annoyed look. "If my father wasn't right over there I would slap you." She walked away from the door, which gave Jasper the signal that he could enter without his wife completely losing her mind over him joining the conversation.
"Chief Swan." Jasper greeted his father-in-law with a nod.
Charlie barely acknowledged Jasper, he was too busy looking between the small Hale family, paying the most attention to Eden.
"Char—"
"How?" Charlie cut off his son-in-law, looking at his daughter.
"Well, I think we all know how."
Jasper sighed from beside his wife. "Jesus Christ, Cass."
"I was just trying to lighten the mood."
"The mood is not even remotely close to being lightened." Charlie replied before getting up from his seat and walking over to Cassadee. "Someone better tell me what is going on or so help me—"
"Her name is Eden and she's your granddaughter." Cassadee confessed quickly, almost talking so fast that Charlie didn't understand. She cringed at her statement before Eden lifted her head to really look around the room. Jasper grinned at the blonde baby, however, it almost completely disappeared when she reached for Charlie.
"Eden." Charlie repeated, his eyes wide as the baby reached for him but he took her in his arms nonetheless.
"Eden Samantha Hale." The brunette said happily, the grin on her face growing even wider when Eden put her hands on Charlie's face and squishing his cheeks together. "Looks like she's a grandpa's girl."
"How old is she?" Charlie asked before smiling down at the baby. "She definitely doesn't look like a newborn."
"She's a week old." Jasper informed, putting his arm around Cassadee and kissing her temple.
"Again, how?" Charlie questioned, finally looking at the couple once Eden stopped moving and settled herself into her grandfather's chest.
"I can't exactly tell you how, just know that it's on a need to know basis." Cassadee confessed, giving Charlie a pleading look to keep him from asking anymore questions.
"I'm tired of not knowing what is going on with you!" Charlie almost shouted, making sure to rub Eden's back comfortingly to keep her calm. "I don't see you for a month and you suddenly have a baby that's half a year old? None of that makes sense, Cassadee!"
"Trust me when I say that I know, Dad." Cassadee agreed calmly. "Nothing normal has happened since we moved here, and I swear one day I will tell you everything but now is not the time."
"What about Bella?" Charlie asked, concern in his face and tone. "How is she really?"
"She's fine, Daddio." Cassadee assured with a soft smile and nod. "I would be the first to tell you if she wasn't."
"Is Edward treating her right?"
Cassadee almost snorted. "He wouldn't be alive if he wasn't."
Charlie almost glared at Jasper. "You have two of the three most important people in my life, if you let anything happen to either of them—"
Jasper cut the man off, the most serious expression Cassadee had ever seen on his face. "If anything ever happens to them it means that I died protecting them."
"Are you sure your name isn't Nicholas Sparks?" Cassadee asked her husband before rolling her eyes. "I can take care of myself and my child just fine, thank you very much." She took Eden out of Charlie's arms, only to have Jasper take her into his. "We should probably go, this has been an eventful day for all of us."
"Don't be a stranger." Charlie said, almost seeming sad to see the three go.
"We'll be back soon, I promise." Cassadee told her father before hugging him. "I think Eden needs to learn the importance of watching cartoons with her grandpa."
"I'll be right here whenever she's ready." Charlie said before kissing his daughter's head. "I'll always be right here whenever you need me."
"Just like you've always been." Cassadee smiled before pulling away and kissing his cheek. "I'll call you later, I love you!"
"And you get on me for being cheesy?" Jasper scoffed once they walked out of the house and to Cassadee's car.
"It's different with him." Cassadee defended herself as Jasper buckled Eden into her car seat. "He's not gonna be around forever, the forty or fifty years he's still around is nothing compared to an eternity like we have."
Jasper gave his wife a sympathetic look. "Don't think about any of that. Think about right now, when Eden is still a baby and your father is still here." He said before kissing her forehead and getting into the drivers seat.
"First he shows up uninvited and now he's driving my car." The Equalizer grumbled before going to the passenger side and getting in.
"I'm not saying that you should've told him, but why didn't you tell Charlie everything?" Jasper questioned before starting the car and taking off down the road.
"He would want to see Bella and that's the last thing either of them needs right now." Cassadee shook her head as the scenario played in her head. "It would kill him to see her in her current state."
The empath glanced at the brunette. "Why do I feel like there's something else to that?"
"Because I also feel like something bad is going to happen soon."
Jasper constantly questioned what the hell Cassadee meant by that statement, to which she usually replied with something like 'I didn't know when you asked two seconds ago and I don't know now.' By the time they got back to the Cullen house he had finally dropped the subject for now. Cassadee got Eden out of the car seat and carried her inside with Jasper not far behind.
"There's my granddaughter." Esme grinned, reaching her arms out to take Eden and Cassadee gladly handed her over. Esme had been so concerned for Bella that she had probably spent the least amount of time with the blonde. "Come on, Bella is in the living room."
The three walked up to the living room where everyone was seated, Rosalie being the only one not watching the football game playing on the screen. While Esme took a seat next to Rosalie and Jasper next to Alice, Bella reached for her sister which signaled that she wanted Cassadee to comfort her. The brunette easily moved Bella's head so she could sit down, instantly stroking the younger twins head.
Cassadee continued to stroke Bella's hair for a while as she mindlessly watched the game, only stopping when she noticed Bella pull her sweater sleeve down to try and warm herself up. "Are you cold?"
"l got it." Jacob said as soon as Bella nodded, moving next to Bella and putting his arm on her leg. Bella smiled and grabbed his arm to warm herself up. "Don't do that."
"What?"
"Smile like I'm your favorite person in the world."
"You're one of them." Bella pointed out. "Feels complete when you're here, Jake."
"Look at us," Cassadee said, smiling at her sister and Jacob. "The three amigos are back."
"And taking care of me." Bella sighed, forcing a smile onto her face through a grimace. "Just like you've always tried to."
"Your life would be in shambles if it wasn't for me, B."
"Actually, she'd be dead." Jacob said, earning a slap on the arm from the Equalizer.
Bella gasped and leaned over the couch before she could even think of a response, using her sister's legs as support. Edward quickly got the bucket and held it in front of his wife but nothing came out.
"We need to find a way to get some food into her system." Esme reminded the group, concern laced in her tone and expression.
"If l could only see the fetus..."
"The baby." Rosalie corrected Alice.
"...maybe l could figure out what it wants."
"Think you might be right." Edward told the werewolf. "Jacob just had an idea."
Jacob snorted. "It wasn't an idea. It was a snide comment."
"What were you thinking?"
"That it's probably just looking for someone to sink its teeth into."
"Good one." Cassadee nodded, giving the werewolf a fist bump.
"He's thirsty." Bella concluded.
"l know the feeling." Emmett said, seemingly daydreaming about feeding.
"lf it's craving, it's not gonna want animal blood." Edward pointed out.
"l have some O negative laid aside for Bella." Carlisle said before leaving the room.
Cassadee looked to her husband, seeing the contemplating look on his face. "Alice."
"Walk with me." Alice said, taking Jasper's hand and pulling him out of the room.
"Emmett," Rosalie said, bringing her husband's attention to her. "Go." That was all he needed to follow his adoptive siblings just before Carlisle came back, pouring blood into a cup.
"Wait, wait, wait." Jacob rushed, sitting up in his spot. "You're gonna make her drink that?"
"It's the fastest way to test the theory." Carlisle stated as he poured the blood into a styrofoam cup.
"Only if you're comfortable with it." Edward assured his wife.
"I'll try anything." Bella said, sitting up the best she could before her sister easily supported her.
"Just hold on." Edward said, getting up to get the cup and straw.
Jacob moved away from Bella. "l think I'm gonna be sick."
"That makes two of us." Cassadee agreed with a cringe.
Edward returned to his spot in front of Bella, cup of blood in hand. "This might make it a little easier to take."
Once Bella took the cup and began drinking it became so quiet that someone could easily hear a pin drop and everyone, aside from Jacob, was a statue.
Bella paused for a moment after taking a drink, her lips stained with the crimson blood. "Tastes good."
Carlisle kneeled down in front of Bella and put his hands on her wrist in order to feel her pulse." Your pulse is already getting stronger." He said with a smile.
"It's working." Esme said with a sigh of relief.
"How am I disgusted by this but I drink bears blood?" Cassadee questioned, more to herself than anyone else as she made a disgusted face at her sister. "Seriously, drinking it out of a cup makes it so weird."
