Prologue

Cold, pale hands dug into the earth, churning the dirt in their fingers. How long had it been since he had felt dirt? His cheek lay pressed against the grass; the blades tickled his face. He had forgotten the smell of the grass, there was so much that he had forgotten. He was on his stomach clothed in a garment of white, or was it grey? He didn't know. His feet were bare and his hair hung loosely over his shoulders. He couldn't remember how he got here or what he was supposed to do here.

He could not even remember his own name, surely he had one?

Yes, he knew that he had one, he just couldn't remember what it was. Perhaps it would come back to him later. Hie struggled to recall images from his past but it seemed as if a heavy fog had settled in his mind, clouding his thoughts and hiding his memories from him. As he lay there bathed in silver moonlight, able only to hear the distant hooting of an owl, something came to him.

A name, but not his own.

Amarth.

Amarth, the name sounded completely foreign to him, who was this person?

Find him, find Amarth.

How could he find someone without knowing what they looked like? All he had was a name.

Find Amarth, and all will be made clear.

All will be made clear? Did that mean his mind would become clear? Did this person, Amarth, know how to bring back his memories? Did they know who he was? Where had he come from?

Find him, find Amarth.

Shakily, he pushed himself onto his knees. His arms trembled beneath him and when he tried to stand on his legs he was afraid to move. Taking one tentative step, he tested what would happen if he put most of his weight on one foot. His leg trembled and he stumbled, almost losing his balance. He felt like an infant who was taking his first steps.

Strange how he could remember something such as that but have no memory of his own name.

Maybe Amarth knew, whoever he was.

He practiced taking small steps to strengthen his legs, and once he was confident that he wouldn't fall over, he began walking at a normal pace. He didn't know where he was going, he didn't even know where he was, but something inside told him to go east.

And that was where he would find Amarth, and perhaps, he would remember who he was.
