• Chapter 11 •
How much does a usual glass of water weigh? If I hold a glass of water in my arm, will it hurt? What if it was super heavy? Or better yet, super light?
The weight of the glass of water doesn't matter. What matters is how long you hold it.
If you hold a glass of water in your arm for a minute, your arm will feel fine. If you hold it for an hour, your arm will begin to ache. If you hold it for a day, your arm will be sore beyond belief. If you hold in for a week, your arm will become numb.
We can use this example when talking about thinking about things that make us anxious, or things we dread.
For example, if I think about a topic that I associate negativity with (an oral speech, seeing a certain person, or going to a certain place) for a minute, I will barely remember it. If I think about it for an hour, it will start to bog down my mood. If I think about it for a day, it will fill me with dread, and I'll be miserable all day. If I think about it for a week, it will paralyze me, and I'll barely be able to get out of my bed.
The thought can be as huge as a future life-changing moment, or just something you said once to a stranger five years ago.
The severity of the thought or idea doesn't matter. What does matter is how long you focus on it.
All you need to remember is this.
Remember to put the glass down.
Change your train of thought. Distract yourself. Healthily, of course. Like a TV show, or singing a song. Writing, reading, talking to a friend about a common interest.
If you didn't like the show you were watching, you would change the channel, right? Do that with your thoughts. Think about something else, something you love. Something that makes you happy. I know that it's easier said than done, but just give it your best. That's all that matters.
Stay safe, friends❤️
