Is This Cannibalism?

Blaze never thought that he would meet even more transformations, but then again, he never thought that he would be a fairy. His magical abilities surfaced when he was six, and it surprised just about everyone but Ice.

Cyclone was his new best friend, and funnily enough, he didn't know about the other transformations either. Today was the day for the briefing for the chosen fairies, so they both went together. Unlike the centuries before, there weren't just female fairies anymore. There were both males and females, of which males outnumbering the original fairy gender.

Both of them had learned a little common sense of identifying fairies that had higher or more of a unique ability than their regular Charmix, Magix or Enchantix, so they were soon to corner another student that displayed abnormal abilities in their trials. Another male fairy, Thorn, who excelled in plant growth and didn't even need to transform.

When recess arrived, they stalked him like he was their senpai and they were the yanderes.

"My transformation?" Thorn blinked, surprised by his advancement as he was being stared down by two teenagers taller than him. "Uh, why?"

Cyclone shrugged, instantly leaning away as his hostile curiosity dissolved. "We're just curious, that's all."

"Hm," Thorn mutters, not buying his lame excuse. "Whatever you say. My form's called Butterflix, is there a problem?"

"Butterflix?" Blaze's mind drifted to the condiment that he would put on freshly toasted baguettes for breakfast. Ice never liked them because as he claimed, were "too fatty" for his taste. "Like, the ones you make from milk?"

If Thorn was offended, he hid it well. But fortunately, he did not whack their heads with an oversized slab of butter. "No! Butterflies. I can communicate and summon mystical animals. What about it?"

Blaze hummed. "How do you get Butterflix? Do you have to complete quests and solve riddles or search thousands of storybooks? Have you ever gotten Enchantix, Believix, Harmonix, Sirenix, or Mythix-"

Thorn last him halfway through, but he explained his process the best he could. He did get Enchantix, but after that, he was told that there was no way to obtain a transformation of higher level. He believed that, but when he travelled to the Land of the Animals on Earth, a place where magical animals had been hiding away for many centuries, he was chosen by the guardian. That was what gifted him Butterflix, for his duty was to protect all life.

Like Blaze's explanation that led Thorn to sleep, Blaze could barely comprehend the words starting from Earth. Like Believix, Earth was a key factor for Butterflix.

"So," Cyclone interrupted, hoping that the information won't overload Blaze's brain. "Do you know who you're going to be paired with?"

Thorn shook his head. "Nope!" He waved his finger, and an empty cafeteria tray from the stack hovered by the food railings. "They're supposed to be confidential, so I don't think we know until the very last minute."

"I just hope that it's not some ass," Blaze groaned, copying Thorn's motion. The cafeteria was empty, for everyone had went to practice magic spells in order to gain Charmix. They were excluded, because they'd already obtained Enchantix or above. They were still in school to complete the experience and exposure.

"Besides," Blaze continued while the nymph in charge of the lunch rush scooped him some mashed potato in his tray, "it's only half a year. How bad can it be?"

"You'd be surprised." Cyclone shirked when the nymph scooped him broccoli. He turned to Thorn. "Can you eat this, or is it considered cannibalism if you do?"

They joined Ice at his table, because they were the only ones here and they didn't want Ice to feel lonely. That's bogus, because Ice slammed his head on the table after three minutes of them arguing over whether him drinking water is considered cannibalism.

"Hey, Blaze," Thorn interjected from their breathless laughter. "If you had the choice, would you choose Sirenix, Believix, Mythix or Butterflix?"

Blaze frowned, snorting as he set his spoon down. "To be honest, I think Enchantix is suited best for me. I'd rather stay here than go somewhere else, because as far as I'm concerned, you all are restricted to either animals, storybooks, or underwater."

Cyclone shrugged. "Can't argue with that." He turned to his broccoli, and prodded it with his fork. School food was enchanted so he couldn't just snap it away with a spell. "But I guess we also have our weaknesses. I can't use magic without my wand."

"I'm pretty weak when there's no life nearby." Thorn nodded.

"I can drown in air."

They turned to Ice, who shrugged as if it was no big deal.

"It only happens if there's pollution nearby. It's a hazard on Earth, really."

"Does Earth need that much saving?" Cyclone frowned, concerned for Thorn and Ice. "I've never been there before."

"If you spent six years on Earth training your magic… then you should know that even magic can't salvage whatever humanity's done to the planet." Ice rested his cheek on his palm, his head turning to the magical garden that was planted in Alfea. "It's a pity, really. Humans can't control themselves, and that's why so many dark magic spawns from there."

Earth, Blaze thought. If Earth was really that bad, then shouldn't Magix be lending a hand? It was true that it was the only sector of reality that held no powers, but isn't Magix known for assisting other universes to survive?

Maybe he could go see it for himself one day. Then he'll know why it's so difficult for a fairy to survive there. Maybe he could stop it.
