1. They're back
As soon as Mahira got back home, she reached for her keys in her bag, her hands shaking as she unsuccessfully inserted it in the keyhole and her fingers became all sweaty. She took a deep breath, once, then again, closed her eyes to calm herself and rang the bell. She stood still, rubbing her hands and waiting for someone to open the door. The minutes of waiting felt like years, but it was all worth it the moment she saw the face of her sister, Chaitra, who looked the same as five years ago. Without thinking anything, she engulfed her in hug, a huge smile on her face while tears rolled down her cheeks. After sobbing on Chaitra's shoulder for about five minutes she finally parted away and looked at her again, "you're back," Mahira said, assuring herself that it indeed was true, and Chaitra nods her head. A smile forming on her face, it might have seemed amusing to her considering she wouldn't have felt any pain these five years. It was like a time travel to them all, wasn't it?
Mahira took a small step, entering the house as Chaitra closed the door after her. She looked around, the house was same as always. She wasn't sure why she was expecting it to change. She turned towards the dining table and saw Mayur sitting there with their Mum and Papa, talking about something useless for sure, and walked towards them, followed by Chaitra after her. She sat beside Mum while Mahira just stood there and stared, trying to believe whatever she was seeing. They were all alive and here with them. With her and Mayur.
During last five years, there hasn't been a single night where she and Mayur had dinner together and hadn't cried. These five years, a lot of things have happened, but nothing was as bad as what happened five years ago, in 2018. The Avengers had failed to defeat Thanos, Mahira doesn't blame them, it's impossible to win every fight of yours and even after the battle, they'd tried to make it right. They'd tried to get those stones back, but they couldn't. And they lost half of them. Forever. She couldn't express how she felt when she saw her father turn from a man to a pile of dust and just moments after that she'd frozen her whole room. In just a snap, Mahira had lost her parents, sister and realised what those monsters had actually done.
That day, Mayur had gotten back home to see no one around, clueless and confused after seeing people turning to dust in his way back and seen her in a corner of her frozen room, crying silently. He hadn't questioned the ice, he hadn't asked where others were, he had just rushed towards her, hugged her and sobbed with her. After that day, they had closed the door of the room and never opened it, they never talked about their parents or Chaitra, just cried whenever they missed them. Soon afterwards they were sent into an orphanage.
A sob escaped Mahira's mouth as she turned towards her Papa, the vision of him getting blipped running in her mind. The look on his face when he'd realised he was leaving was still fresh in her mind. She took in a sharp breath as she sat on a chair beside him, "you're back!" she repeated, for what seemed like the millionth time, smiling while tears rolled down her cheeks and he shifted forward on his chair.
He looked at her, a smile on his face which didn't show anything more than relief, "I am," he stated, holding her hand in his as if to show her it wasn't a dream, "we all are! It's like we never disappeared." Except they did. For five fucking years. She nodded, unable to control her tears or the smiling. The conversation went on while they ate dinner, for the first time her and Mayur didn't cry out of sorrow.
Their father explained how he was with Mahira when he suddenly saw himself blipping while she was in front of him and then a second later it was like he was still there but she was gone, "for a moment I'd thought I had lost you," he said, looking at her, "and I had screamed out your name, tried to open the door but it was closed," he explained, Mahira was relieved that he hadn't questioned about the lock and that the ice had disappeared. She looked towards Mayur who shared the same expressions, "I had panicked hard for twenty minutes untill Mayur had opened the door and told me everything."
It had been completely different for Chaitra and their mother, who apparently were with each other when the half the world was snapped away. They were beyond confused about what had happened and came out running to check on the kids and found the door closed. They were also freaked out untill Mayur had found them and explained the situation. Mahira wasn't sure what would have happened if Mayur had to leave for work today, they would've gone completely mental by the time they would have returned.
They had further explained them how they had to live in an orphanage for five years and just gotten out two months back when they turned 18. Shivam, their father, had a hard time believing that his small babies had grown up and were now even able to vote and Raghvi, their mother, was silently crying at the fact that she'd missed the most important part of their childhood. After all the explaining was done, Mayur and Mahira told them about all the stuff in last five years, like how they had both gotten good grades and how Mayur had asked out a girl only to be soaked in a bottle of water because she was married and 25. He'd insisted it wasn't funny but spoiler: it was very funny!
For the first time in a while, they had forgotten about all their stress and had smiled for real. When the clock's minute hand reached 7 and its hour hand was between 10 and 11, Raghvi ordered them to go in their rooms and get a 'good night's' sleep. Even after talking for four hours, there were so many things they were still unaware of. Some which the twins needed to hide and some which they needed some time to deliver. Mahira stepped inside her room, everything was the way it was five years ago when they'd closed it, except there was no ice now. Surprisingly, there were no webs or dust. She took in a deep breathe to gain the confidence which she needed badly if she was going to be sleeping here. She lied on the bed, her back against the bed and facing the ceiling. Her mind racing through thoughts untill it stopped at one five years ago. Rohak Kashyap.
