Chapter 5
The kids stared at the woman who was supposedly their aunt who rolled their eyes. "Really Alma? We had a deal." Valeria groaned showing her true form.
"Sorry Vale but the time was now." Abuela said looking at her entire family who was shocked. "Everyone this is Valeria. Protectora of the Encanto." Alma introduced the woman who bowed her head.
"Protector?" Mirabel questioned getting a nod from Valeria. "I have kept the miracle safe from any outside threats who come to take it for their own selfish desires." Valeria looked up to the candle in the window. Yellow sparkles floated down and flew around Valeria before returning back to the candle.
"Wait how long have you been alive for?" Camilo asked getting a smack upside the head from his mother. Valeria laughed softly, "Quite a long time."
"Before we start the real training, I would like to see what you all can do individually." Valeria said in a stern yet soft voice. "Isabela, if you would come with me." The brunette held out her hand to the girl. Isabela took Valeria's hand and the pair disappeared in a swirl of golden sparkles.
The kids panicked wondering where they went. "Relax, all of you. Valeria has the power of teleportation." Abuela said reassuring everyone who sighed in relief.
Valeria took Isabela to her training room in a hidden spot by the river. Walking forward, Valeria could feel Isabela's nervousness and hesitation. "Tranquila amor. I just want to see what you can do, nothing more." Valeria said softly patting the girl's hand. Isabela instantly calmed at Valeria's soft touch and soothing voice.
"Now, just remember. This is all an illusion. Nothing will physically harm you. I want to see what you can do." Valeria clasped her hands together and closed her eyes. Isabela watched in awe as the scenery changed transforming into a battlefield.
"Let your instincts guide you mi flor. Show me what you can do." Isabela heard Valeria's voice in her mind though she couldn't see the woman. There was a yell behind her causing her to whip around to see a soldier charge towards a few kids. Isabela put her hands out as vines erupted from the ground wrapping themselves around the soldier and squeezing him until he turned to dust.
A few more soldiers appeared running towards Isabela who sent a swarm of thorns their way impaling them. Isabela was surprised looking down at her hands.
"Excellent." Isabela smiled hearing Valeria's voice. An entire army burst through the castle gates swarming around Isabela completely surrounding her. The closest soldier swung his sword catching Isabela's arm. She winced and clasped her hand over the cut.
"You can still feel pain but it will not affect you in real life. Remember, this is just an illusion."
Isabela screamed angrily throwing her hands face down. The ground rumbled before splitting in half swallowing the soldiers whole and closing back up after them. Panting heavily with anger, Isabela watched the illusion disappear and heard the sound of rushing water once more. She looked at her arm to see the cut wasn't there.
"Excellent job mi amor." Valeria approached the girl rubbing her arms comfortingly. "Eres una guerrera. You are a warrior."
Isabela smiled proudly hugging Valeria tightly.
"That was so much fun! When can I do it again?" Valeria laughed at Isabela's eagerness.
"Another time mi amor. I must work with the rest of your family but you did a great job for your first time." Valeria tucked a strand of Isabela's hair behind her ear before taking her hand and teleporting back to the casa.
"Isa! You're back!" Mirabel hugged her older sister tightly.
"How was training?" Camilo asked sitting on the stairs playing with Antonio.
"It was great! I'm a guerrera." Isabela said proudly.
"What?! No way!" Camilo jumped up in both excitement and shock.
"Isabela must rest her powers and relax for a little bit. Then, she must practice and get used to her newfound ability." Valeria looked to Isabela who nodded understandingly and went up to her room.
"Camilo. You're up." Valeria announced. The boy walked forward and stood dutifully in front of Valeria. She placed her hands on his shoulders and took him to the river.
Camilo looked around in awe turning to take in all of his surroundings. He stumbled and ran after Valeria who was waiting for him on a circle like platform in the middle of the river.
"Now Camilo. This will be an illusion. I will give you an objective and see what you do." Valeria informed. Camilo nodded and readied himself for whatever was going to happen.
The surroundings changed as they were being encapsulated by yellow sparkles. Camilo looked around and realized he was in a small town. People were walking by minding their own business and chatting with one another. Camilo looked at everything in awe when he noticed a yellow flag at the top of castle in front of him surrounded by soldiers.
"Your objective is to retrieve the flag without attracting attention to yourself."
Camilo made his way towards the castle avoiding the soldiers that were on patrol. He then dove behind a stone wall and looked towards the entrance of the castle where many guards were stationed. Calculating his next move, he noticed some patrols walking inside along with someone coming out. He shapeshifted into one of the soldiers and quickly joined one of the patrols walking by.
None of the soldiers paid attention to him as he made his way inside the castle. Quietly separating from the group, he ran up the spiral staircase when he ran straight into another soldier.
"Careful! Watch where you're going!" The soldier snapped brushing his uniform off.
"Sorry! Sorry!" Camilo said quickly causing the soldier to look at him suspiciously. It was then that Camilo realized that his voice sounded nothing like the other soldiers.
"I mean sorry." Camilo cleared his throat and took on the deepest voice he could put on.
The soldier narrowed his eyes as Camilo started to sweat but still stood tall not cowering or glancing around nervously. The soldier nodded his head and continued on his way. Camilo sighed in relief and continued going up until he came out on the top floor of the castle where the flag blew in the wind. There were about four soldiers patrolling each corner but none of them seemed to be looking at the flag.
Camilo took this opportunity and walked towards the flag not wanting to draw attention if he ran towards it. He reached forward and took the flag out of its stand smiling.
"Oye! El es un impostor!" One of the soldiers yelled pointing at Camilo getting the attention of the other soldiers.
Camilo ran towards the stairs only for more soldiers to come from there. It was then that he noticed the other side of the castle had no guards so he ran over there. More soldiers surrounded leaving him with nowhere to run. They slowly approached him and backed him up against the wall wearing sinister smiles.
Camilo turned and jumped off the castle seeing the ground rushing to meet him. He closed his eyes and felt a new power inside of him. There was a blinding light and the ground stopped coming towards him. Camilo opened his eyes to see that he was a bird and in his beak was the flag. The illusion faded and there was Valeria smiling at him proudly.
"Did you see that!? I turned into a bird!" Camilo jumped onto his feet playing around with his newfound power to turn into animals.
Valeria laughed softly before approaching the boy. Camilo returned to his normal form as Valeria placed her hands upon his shoulders.
"Eres un espía. You are a spy." She said as Camilo cheered once more. He then pulled the woman into a hug saying thank you. Valeria patted his head fondly before taking them back to the house.
"Camilo! What's the verdict?" Mirabel asked excitedly. She was playing with Antonio to keep him busy since he was bored.
Night had fallen upon the encanto. Luisa and Dolores were also downstairs doing a craft together. Isabela was in her room resting as per Valeria's orders. The adults were also resting after doing all of the kids' chores since they were training.
"I'm a spy." Camilo announced seeming shocked himself.
"That's so cool!" Antonio looked up a his older brother in awe. Valeria rested a hand on Camilo's shoulder causing him to look at her.
"This spy however needs his rest." She looked at him knowingly.
"I know. Go rest then practice my powers." Camilo repeated what Valeria had said to Isabela hours before.
Camilo waved goodbye to his cousins and siblings before heading up to his room.
"I'm working with you two tomorrow." Valeria addressed Luisa and Dolores who smiled and nodded.
"And you two." She pulled Mirabel and Antonio into her arms making them laugh.
On the other side of the encanto, a man in a uniform burst through the ground hoisting himself up. He smiled sinisterly looking at the village before setting his eyes upon the Madrigal home.
"I found it. The Encanto and along with it, a woman who will give me limitless powers."
