Chapter 7

As Kai sits in the living room, he ponders and tries to come to terms with what just happened, knowing exactly what it is from the connection with the others. First he had to go through the entire bone-breaking ordeal that is shifting and the crazy change in emotions that comes with that, and due to Alpha rules, he isn't allowed to speak to any of his old friends—not wanting the local secret to find its way into the wrong hands. He realizes this means Hannah too, and he's conflicted. She just went through a terrible break-up and he had promised to help her out, seeing as their dads have been friends forever, but now he can't. Alpha...this whole shifter thing is weird to him..he knew about the old stories of the area, but never actually believed his dad to be right and for these things to actually exist..it begs the question what else from those stories are real...

He was actually coming to see if he could talk with Mason and ask about telling Hannah what is happened to him or why he suddenly ghosted her, but that's when he ran into Adelaide and suddenly things were different. Things began to shift. He was no longer worried about Hannah and whether or not they could ever work out, but to needing to get to know Adelaide and it was almost like a familiarity with her, that he was being pulled toward the new girl. Risking sounding completely crazy, as he made eye contact with her round hazel eyes, he began to see different flashes. Flashes of the future? The two of them together laughing at the beach, her rushing to his side in the middle of an enormous clearing, and her soft hand coming up to caress his face that shone with sweat. All thoughts of his previous drama with Hannah left his mind as he was suddenly consumed with wanting to know and protect this woman. Maybe he could ask Mason...

Oh shit...

He thinks as his eyes widen in realization. He can't really tell Mason...at least not right now... Kai would be a dead man. Mason had already done the job of threatening the pack of boys that his niece was off limits, not wanting her to get tangled up in all this, apparently true, mess. As Mason walks through his front door, Kai tenses just slightly not wanting to slip up or do something that will cause Mason to question him, but he was able to think quickly and asked about his new role in the pack of shapeshifters. Learning that he gets a day or so to adjust before becoming part of the daily patrols of the area to make sure nothing dangerous has made its way onto the land. Kai isn't sure what else is said to him, due to his thoughts drifting back towards Adelaide and his shock at just how similar they are to each other. Excitement rushes through his veins remembering she's into cars, and that's just not common in girls, but it is definitely ever guy's dream! The rest of the guys now filter into the living room, and Kai has to keep his knee from bouncing uncontrollably as his mind is pulling him towards the kitchen to get more time around her, but he stops the sensation because he knows how weird it would look, seeing as he's a terrible cook and Talia has banned most of them from the kitchen, unless its to help with dishes..

He runs a hand over his face, disheveling his hair a little in the process, as he tries to figure out this new feeling, but recognizing it's better than being in constant agony around Hannah and that drama.. Talia calls the boys in for dinner, and it's suddenly a mad rush for seats around the table and who can get to the delicious food first, when Kai notices Addy not among the faces around the table.

"Hey, where's Addy?" Elliott asks and Kai doesn't like the tightening feeling in his chest towards his friend, but he ignores it as best he can as the group looks toward Talia.

"She went for a walk...I said somethings that didn't bode well with her and she just needed time to cool off." Talia admits causing her husband to jump into protector mode.

"A walk? In the woods? Dammit." Mason mumbles, and without another word he is out the door the rest following without instruction.

The group shifts quickly, each of them thankful to not catch the sickly sweet smell of their natural enemies, but all noting that there is a new smell that none of them recognize. Quickly splitting the group, Drew and Tyler taking the parameter of the town to make sure it's safe while Mason, Elliott, and Kai follow this new scent all the way to the cliffside. Staying to the tree lines, the group waits and watches to see what or who might make their way into view seeing as the scent is the strongest here at the cliffs. Seeing nothing for a while now, Mason directs the other two to head back, knowing to just keep an eye out for this scent in the future, but for right now, it's not a threat.

As Addy sits on the cliffside, breathing in the salty air she realizes this is just what she needed and it's incredibly helpful in calming her down and clearing her head. As she looks over the horizon, she knows she has to be getting back because it's close to dinner, but she also doesn't want to worry her family. She looks around herself, feeling like she is being watched, and quickly gets up wanting to head home not really liking this feeling... Walking along the pathway through the forests from the cliffs, she begins to feel better and starts to think about all the strange nuances that have been happening around her since she moved to the rainy town. The fact that her uncle has all these young men at his house on the daily just seems weird, but maybe it is because it is a different culture out here, that different families can take care of those around them. The whole "it takes a village" thing seems to be prevalent here.

"Oh Addy!" Rings out as she makes it just through the threshold of the farmhouse and it tackled in a tight hug by her aunt. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean—"

"It's alright Talia, I'm sorry I acted the way I did. I do appreciate you looking out for me." They both smile at each other before Mason makes his way to the girls sighing in relief at seeing his niece.

"Sorry, thought I'd explore a little." She explains as he pulls her tightly in a hug, she shivers as heat radiates from him—she didn't even realize she was cold..

"That's alright, just don't go disappearing on me." He chuckles a little. "The boys were wanting to do a bonfire at the beach tonight, are you up for it?"

"Hell yeah! I'll go get some warmer clothes on!"

He laughs at his niece as she heads up the stairs to get something warmer on, seeing as the day is already cooling off. As she rushes around her room, she comes to the realization of just how much she enjoys being around these boys, including Kai and his warm personality. The commonalities between them is comforting for Adelaide, knowing she doesn't have to change who she is in order to fit in with the people here. Meeting her uncle and the rest of the group downstairs they all begin the trek from the cozy farmhouse, through the lush, green forests, and finally end up on the relaxing shore. Her and Talia giggle from their spots on the blankets as the watch the guys attempt to make a fire in between them all, before Mason has to step in and finally get it going with grunts of "we had it" coming from the others. As the boys settle in, she finds herself wedged warmly in-between Kai and Elliott and she's thankful for their heat as the temperature dropped like crazy being this close to the water.

"We should tell some spooky ghost stories." Drew suggests, nudging the side of Tyler as they both chuckle at the ridiculousness of it all, but quickly stop when given a glare from Mason. Adelaide catches that and raises a brow, not thinking her uncle was one who didn't like scary stories.

"Don't worry about them, they'r just being idiots." Elliott comments from her side with a roll of his eyes to which she simply shrugs before leaning her head against Kai's shoulder, an unknown exhaustion creeping up on her suddenly.

"You tired Ads?" Her shoulders barely lift as the muscles are weighed down and her eyes flutter shut, and he shifts saying something that she just doesn't catch so her eyes spring open trying to keep herself awake.

"I'm fine, really."

"Mason said it was alright that I walk you home. C'mon, we don't want you falling over." He chuckles making her laugh sarcastically as he pulls her up from her sitting position gently, and now she is desperately trying to fight the urge to sleep, not wanting to take Kai away from the fun and making him feel obligated to take me home. Not able to overcome the strong sensation of exhaustion she allows Kai to lead her away from the beach and the warmth of the fire back towards the house with their hands interlocked—to keep her upright of course.

"You're such a party pooper." She mumbles with a smirk, now leaning against him for support and he slings an arm around her to keep her upright and laughs, smiling down at the dazed woman.

"You're just upset that you are the only one that's tired and missing out on all the fun."

"What do you do in your free time?" She suddenly asks after some silence rolls in, desperate to keep herself awake and in this moment.

"Well, I'm in the process of restoring my car. Other than that it's uh.. work or staying home with my dad. What about you Addy?" She notices his pause, but it's quickly discarded from her mind as she tries to think what it is she likes to do that isn't sleep..

"Well, right now I've just been at Mason's place unless we all go do something. But sometimes I like to go out and explore the area, get more familiar with where I live..." Feeling him tense beside her, she looks up at him with a questioning brow but she can't read the emotion on his face as he looks at her.

"These forests aren't safe right now Ads. You shouldn't go out by yourself—"

"Don't worry, I'll just stay to the places I've been." She quickly changes the subject not fully understanding why it's okay for the boys to go out and do whatever it is in the forest, but she can't... "What kind of car are you fixing?"

"My old VW Rabbit. It's a collector so I'm working on restoring it and making it run.." He ends in a chuckle, running a nervous hand through his dark hair, when suddenly an idea strikes Addy.

"Can I help you? I used to help my Da all the time with his uh..motorbike, and well..it would give me something to do." He smiles brightly at the idea, noticing her freeze and choke out the word motorbike, but she obviously doesn't want to talk about it so he ignores that part and his excitement builds at her question.

"That would be great! It would give me someone other than myself to talk to." Realizing they've made it back to Mason's the disappointment is evident on both their faces before a yawn overtakes Addy making him chuckle again. "We'll start tomorrow, I'll come by and get you alright?" Smiling as she covers another yawn, she nods enthusiastically.

"Sure, sure. I'll see you tomorrow Kai."

Surprise is evident on his face just briefly before he waves and heads back towards the beach and she shuts the door, not wanting to look like a creep as she subconsciously was watching him leave. She heads up the stairs a giddy excitement overtaking her as she thinks over everything that just happened, and even though she told herself she wasn't going to be pull in by these crazy attractive local boys, she can't help feeling the connection with Kai. As her head hits the pillow, she is launched into a dreamworld of lush forests and the secrets they hold.
