Chapter 4
A couple of days have gone by since Adelaide has met the rest of the group, and due to their infectious laughter and carefree nature she feels as though she could forget all her problems, but not completely. With the help of these boys, it's been easier for her to try and keep the promise to her father, to keep moving forward, to live her life. Making the decision that her mental state is not well enough to enroll in classes in the local school, she takes the year from school, but promises to try and keep her studies up. The had been decided to spend the day at the local beach, since it is an actually sunny day in the typical rainy coast. Tyler suggests the group start with cliff diving as they all circle around the table, chowing down on eggs and bacon, when Addy finally makes her way there.
"Hey Aussie! You ready for the beach?" Tyler uses the nickname he insisted on calling her around the mouthful of food, and she laughs at his lack of manners while gathering a plate for herself before sitting down.
"Definitely. It's been a while since I've relaxed at a beach." Wedging herself between Elliott and Drew, they both send her a smile and the table buzzes with excitement as she finishes her breakfast, Tyler being the first to jump up.
"Alright slow pokes! Let's go!" He yells, jumping up from his seat, the others quickly following behind him.
As she looks up and sees Mason already looking at her with a genuine smile and she sends one back before they all grab, their towels, sunglasses, soccer balls, and coolers with food for later and head out the house to walk through the surrounding forest to the hidden beach. Going along the trails, Adelaide looks at the beauty surrounding her loving how different it all is from the outback she's so used to seeing, and suddenly she hears it, the waves crashing against the shoreline and her own excitement bubbles over and she runs up, jumping on the back of Elliott.
"To the beach!"
"Damn woman! Next time some warning would be nice."
He complains but it quickly turns into laughter as he catches her in enough time, and she notices how warm his skin is against hers and finds it odd, but doesn't question it as they finally break through the tree line. She smiles as she sees the beach, the group of them walking to the spot they seem to have all been before, a sandy spot in the perfect view of the entire area. As Adelaide gets off the back of her ride, she helps Talia set up the blankets and towels as the boys hurry to kick off their shoes and Adelaide takes to folding her clothes neatly on her towel, hoping not to get sand on her things when she feels eyes burning into her skin. She looks over catching Elliott's gaze causing her to blush, and she notices just how in shape these boys are, and she can't stand the fact that she is blushing so hard, and hopes none of them notice.
"To the cliffs!" She hears Tyler yell before her world is suddenly turned upside down.
"Tyler!" She shrieks in surprise as she's suddenly thrown over his shoulder. "Put me down you prat!" The boy quickly scales the pathway, she didn't realize just how fast he really was.
"A what?" He stops in confusion not recognizing the slag word from the other side of the globe. He sets her down and she laughs at the confusion on his face. "What the hell is a prat?"
"It's you. That's what it is." She states making Drew laugh before she looks over the edge realizing just how high up they are and suddenly she's not so sure about it. As they all crowd around the edge of the cliff, an old beat up truck pulls over on the side of the road behind them and the driver gets out quickly seeming to panic as they watch Mason push Tyler over the edge causing the rest of the boys and Adelaide to laugh loudly.
"You wanna jump?" Elliott asks as he stands beside Adelaide, sensing her tension about the height. "I'll jump with you if you want?"
"Sure, sure." She concludes and he looks taken aback for a second, before grabbing her hand and turning towards the edge.
"On three?"
"Let's do it!" She smirks and they laugh before beginning the countdown.
"THREE!"
She shouts before they both run off the edge, the feeling of the ground leaving from beneath her feet before she begins to fall is exhilarating and she understands why this is such a popular activity. They laugh the entire way down into they crash into the freezing water, bubbles encasing their two figures as waves continue to crash over their heads and they both surface with deep gasps of air. Elliott looks at her with his hair falling flat of his face and a big goofy grin gracing his olive features, when she suddenly gets the idea to splash him in the face, and around his shock he splashes her back starting a war before they decide to go jump from the cliff again.
"H-how are you n-n-not co-cold..?" She stutters through her teeth chattering to the group of boys back at the top of the cliffs as the wind begins to blow through just enough to chill her temperature.
"Aww the wittle Aussie isn't used to the cold? You're gonna wanna get used to it hun, it's always cold here."
Tyler comments with a smirk, making her stick her tongue out at him before she's suddenly engulfed in heat and an involuntary sigh escapes her lips. Elliott has come up behind her, placing his arms around her shoulders and giving her a genuine smile. Even though she feels better from the heat, she still finds the situation a tad bit awkward, but she chalks it up to him just being helpful and nice before they decide to go off the cliffs another time. When she surfaces again, she decides to swim into the shore and bundle up next to Talia because she was slowly getting frozen.
"I think Elliott has a thing for you." Her aunt smiles at her, but she turns shocked not expecting to hear that at all.
"I doubt that Talia, honestly. I've only known him a couple of days, and he's just being friendly to the new person." She reasons, but she hates that this has already come up about someone there and she's not even mentally or emotionally ready for that..
"No Addy, Jared and Paul are being friendly. I can tell Elliot likes you, he's been very reserved for some time and it seems you brought him back to who he was before he had to leave his other friends." Her eyebrows raise, not knowing he had left some old friends behind and she suddenly has sympathy for Elliott and how hard that must be for him.. but she hopes he doesn't expect more, because she just doesn't see him in that way.
"I don't want to hurt him Talia... I got out of a toxic relationship before I moved here, and—and after the accident I'm not mentally or emotionally ready for anything more than a friendship."
She looks at her niece in sympathy, placing a hand on top of hers. Adelaide decides to tell her aunt about what happened a couple years ago, and how she found her boyfriend of two years making out with her childhood best friend as she went to visit this friend for Adelaide's birthday. This had broken her trust in people, and her dad had been a big part in the healing process for her, and so being reminded of relationships this close to the accident just wasn't good for her. She wraps her in a tight hug, reassuring her that she won't have to worry about being betrayed here, she knows these boys and she knows they would never hurt anybody like that.
"Thank you Talia."
Realizing that she can trust her aunt with the things that have happened and the trauma she's gone through, lifts a huge weight off her shoulder and gives her a support system she lost when she had lost her best friend. Having the feeling of a relationship with trust, was a new feeling, but one she welcomed and it gives her hope not only for healing but for a future here in Port Orchard. After some time, the boys return from the cliffs and it is decided that they all return to Mason's house for dinner, and as laughter fills the dining room, a weight is lifted off of Adelaide and she finally begins to believe she can be happy now.
