Chapter 2

It's been a little after just two weeks since the accident, Adelaide being released into her mothers care a week ago, after making sure all signs of bleeding had stopped and there wasn't any more residual injuries. Consumed by grief and regret, the once healthy girl has now turned into a pale and thin shell, her eyes no longer holding life and shine like they used to. Kate consumed with her own demons doesn't seem too worried about her daughter since the doctors okayed her to go home and return to a normal life. Battling the inner thoughts of wanting to blame Adelaide for the death of Will, knowing it wasn't entirely her fault, her broken heart still yearns for someone to lash out at. Heading up to her daughters bedroom, she slightly knocks on the already open door with no emotion on her tired face.

"Adelaide, pack up your what you can. We're moving to the states."

She informs not making eye contact with Adelaide while she tells her to pack up her life in what seems to be such a random request. Deciding there was no use in asking her mother where they were moving to and why, she gets to work on grabbing her personal belongs and memory tokens into multiple types of bags that can be easily transferred without being shipped. After a couple hours of packing up everything that made this feel like home, Adelaide brings the bags downstairs with her only to notice her mother carrying just one suitcase. Raising a brow in wonder, she comes to the conclusion that her mother will have to return in order to sell the house so she can always get the other things later.

"Where in the states are we headed to Mum?" Watching as her own mother flinches at her voice the feelings of guilt well up inside again, hating how her own mother has been acting towards her since the accident.

"We're going to stay with my brother Mason in Washington until we can find a place of our own there." Suddenly realizing just how different her life is going to be hits her like a ton of bricks, not only did she lose her father, but now she is going to be losing all ties to him by moving so far away into such a rainy place, where the sun will hardly shine.

"Why are we moving so far away?"

"It's where I grew up, and it's only fair you meet my side of the family."

Adelaide's eyebrows bunch in confusion as to why now her mother thinks she needs to go and meet that side of her family, and so she can easily tell her mother is lying. She knows her mom is having a hard time being constantly reminded about Will's death, but she never would've thought it would cause them to move across the world... Getting through the airport was a short and simple task, the part Adelaide was dreading the most was being stuck so close to her mother in the plane for 18 hours. The tension has just become a lot in the small amount of time that they have been together, and she doesn't quite know how this all will end. She's able to find a bit of restitution from her conscious issues on the flight as being in a constant state of emotionally exhausted, she was able to get some sleep before a memory haunted her sleep.

One side of the brushed white French doors is opened and shut quickly as a tearful Adelaide hopes not to be seen coming home early by either of her parents. Although she could argue her reason for leaving early was a decently good one... She had just found her boyfriend, of a year and a half, cheating on the person she used to call her best friend, and because she's a fighter, she confronted him and broke up with him and came home.

"Addy Kat? What happened Sweetheart?" Will peaks his head around the corner of the living room towards the stairs where he could see his daughter attempting to sneak past, and watches as he can see her deflate even more at the sound of his voice.

"Aiden...he cheated on me! With Annalyse out of everyone!" She pauses to catch her breath around her tears as Will rubs her back in comfort, hating to see his only daughter have to go through such a rough heartbreak. "So I ended things with him, and left classes early because I knew I wasn't gonna be able to focus any longer.." He continues to shush her and is grateful when she begins to relax even more, and he gets down to her level smiling and moving her disheveled dark hair from her face.

"You'll be alright, it's his loss any way. You listen to be me Adelaide Katia Turner, you don't need a boy. You are beautiful, perfect just the way you are, and more independent than anyone else your age. This boy was stupid, and obviously not worth your time. You are so strong my sweet girl, and I want you to promise me that you will never beat yourself up over something a silly boy does. Okay?" She nods as he gives her a gentle kiss on the forehead causing them both to smile at each other.

"I promise. Thank you Dad, for always being here for me."

"I'll always be here for you Addy Kat, no matter what happens." He smiles before he watches her disappear up the stairs to clean her room of the boy who broke her heart and start over with a fresh new perspective.

The memory goes dark and Adelaide is confused as she feels like she should be awake but is stuck in this darkness and isn't quite sure what to make of it.

"Adelaide, honey." A sudden voice comes out of the darkness and she knows she would be able to recognize it anywhere, especially now.

"Daddy? Is that you?" She asks into the darkness, spinning around to find its source before coming face-to-face with the bright, wide smile of her father who she's missed for the last couple of weeks...

"Hey Addy Kat." He greets opening his arms up to her and she immediately falls into his embrace, missing it terribly and wishing she could do anything to have it back.

"How...how are you here right now? How uh, how long can you stay?" She attempts to get out around her tears, smiling at the fact she gets to be here again with her dad.

"I'm here to talk, about everything. I don't want you to be so upset about what happened, and I don't want you blaming yourself." He states with finality looking into her eyes and she shakes her head quickly the tears coming faster.

"How can I not be upset? Or even blame anyone but me?! Had I not insisted so much for going on the ride that day, we would've never gotten hit, and you would still be here. And things would still be how they were...."

"Adelaide Turner you listen to me. It was not ever your fault. It was my choice to position myself in-between you and the truck that day. I don't regret it. It's my duty as a father to protect you, and so I saved your life so that you might continue to live a long and happy life you deserve. That is all I ask of you."

"I don't know how much of that I can do...Mum even isn't the same any more, and without you...my life is just..."

"I want you to Adelaide. Please, you have to promise me. You deserve to be happy, and moving to Washington is going to change your life in so many ways, you have to be ready and you have to be strong." He grasps both of her hands in his larger ones, wanting and trying to get this across to his daughter. Being on the other side he knows what awaits for her in the states, and knowing she's strong enough to be apart of it, he knows she still needs to realize this for herself. Tears build inch of their eyes as the time they have together now is fleeting and she must battle the thoughts within herself before nodding.

"Okay, I promise. To work on not blaming myself and trusting what you've told me...but Dad...it, it is so hard."

"I know it's hard sweetheart, but I know how strong you are and I know you can get through this. I'll always be with you. I promise." As he wipes away her stray tears, and kisses the top of her head once more relishing in being near his only daughter once more for this short amount of time, but he knows he must leave her again.

"I love you my sweet girl."

"I love you too..." She trails off as she realizes he's fading in the moment and sobs begin to settle in her chest as she tries impossibly to hold onto him as the darkness claims him once more.

She wakes with a sudden start finding herself still on the plane, wiping at her eyes to find tears making their way down her cheeks and thinking back on everything her dad was able to tell her while they talked for the first time in months. Her curiosity bubbles as she wonders what he meant about her life changing in Washington and being prepared for it. Her mother looks at her to make sure she's awake since they will be landing soon and is shocked to see the tear streaks on her skin. The two women wait to feel the jolt of the landing gear on the tarmac and the ding of the seatbelt light to grab their things and work their way off the plane and into the new airport. Addy looks around the new place and quickly notices the amount of clouds and how dark it seems to be outside without any sun breaking through, and she notices the rain thinking to herself that this will all be such a new experience. As Adelaide waits for her bags, her mother begins to look around frantically, not being able to see her brother anywhere in the sea of faces.

"Mason was going to come pick us up, just make sure you have all your bags." Her mother doesn't even bother to look in her direction, still searching for her brother until suddenly she notices a familiar tall, muscular shape with the same olive complexion and dark hair.

"Mason!"

Kate yells, and Adelaide looks over quickly realizing she needs to grab her bags before her mother leaves her behind in such an unfamiliar place. Mason Reed sends his little sister a sad smile, wrapping her in a tight hug before greeting his niece the same way and taking a couple of her bags from her since he could tell she was getting overwhelmed. As he welcomes them to the rainy Pacific Northwest, they head out to his truck—a grey Chevy that they load with their bags in the bed and get in. It's a short drive down the coastline to Port Orchard, a small little town in the state of Washington, and Addy can't help but notice just how beautiful it is here and even though it isn't nearly as sunny as she is used to, she's starting to see herself really loving this place.

The area is just as she remembers, reminiscing of the last time she was here when she was just a little girl probably over a decade ago. It's such a small, quaint and beautiful place, and it's one of the reasons she loves it so much. It has a certain character about it, and it just feels like home to those who visit the area. Watching the neighborhoods flash by in-between blocks of dense green forests, her smile grows as the trees begin getting thicker while the houses get more sparse and she knows she's heading in the direction of her uncles property. Pulling up to the two story farmhouse, with the smile now consistent on her face, they pile out of the truck and begin to pull the bags from the truck. Mason leads Addy into the house helping her with her many suitcases and once they pass the threshold, he pulls her into another tight hug.

"I'm glad you're here Addy. If you just need to talk, I'm always here for you alright?" He says into her hair, placing a sweet kiss onto the top of her head, and she nods at his words, not knowing if anything would make it passed the lump in her throat at the kindness and love radiating from him in this moment. The moment is suddenly broken by the front door swinging open and a new voice appearing in this moment.

"Hey Mason we found—uhhh. Who's this?" The voice belongs to Elliott Canter one of the guys that works alongside Mason and a few others in this rural area of Washington. Also sporting the similar olive skin tone and short black hair, he fits in with the demographic of the area, yet his sudden arrival makes Mason tense.

"Elliott, now's not the time—" Before Mason can tell him to come back later with whatever information he's found, Adelaide pulls back from the hug not liking how rude her uncle is seeming to be towards this guy.

"Mason, it's fine." She clears the few tears from her eyes before turning and placing a smile on her face as she introduces herself. "I'm Adelaide, Mason's niece. Sorry I don't typically look like rubbish." She laughs without humor a little as she takes in the guys looks, and he simply smiles back at her, noticing the difference in her accent.

"I'm Elliott and I like your accent. For the record though you don't look like 'rubbish'." Elliott introduces himself and slowly makes eye contact with Addy breathing a sigh of relief when nothing changes, and the tensions slowly leaves the room.

"Thanks. I just moved here from Australia." She smiles slightly, hoping this will be one of her many new friends while being here, knowing that being isolated after everything that happened won't be good for her mental health, and she promised her father she'd take care of herself. She begins to bring the discarded cases up the stairs and into the guest bedroom while Mason goes and helps Kate with unloading the rest of the truck.

"Here let me help you with those!"

Elliott offers as he easily grabs the rest of her heavy cases with ease, and she thanks him as they make their way up the stairs, passed the bathroom and the linen closet, to the left and in to her new temporary room. She follows him back down the narrow staircase, procrastinating unpacking any of her things until later when she can suddenly hear her uncle and mother arguing in the dining room.

"Please Mason! You have to understand—!"

"Understand what Kate? That you are deciding to run from your problems and leaving your daughter behind when you need each other the most?!" At the news, Adelaide feels her heart begin to freeze, her hand coming up to cover her gasp as tears begin to well in her eyes. Her legs suddenly give out and she slides down along the wall to sit on a stair.

"You don't understand how hard it is Mason and what I'm going through! Every time I look at her, I see Will. I can't stand to talk to her because she sounds just like him! It hurts me too much Mason!" The guilt and regret bubble up with the sobs in her chest that she tries to muffle as she eavesdrops, hating that she's caused their family so much pain, almost agreeing with her mother's own reasoning...

"Do you not care or even realize how much pain Addy is in? How much more pain she will be in if you do this to her?"

"Please Mason. This is the only favor I've ever asked of you—"

"Just leave Kate.." Adelaide's eyes get wide around her tears not having expected her uncle to kick his own sister out of his house. She finds a little comfort in knowing that at least her uncle supports her and is willing to help her heal.

"What? Mason—"

"Addy will stay with me—"

"Oh thank—"

"Don't thank me Kate. I'm just doing what's right and supporting my niece through her trauma, in hopes she won't blame herself forever. But you don't have to worry about that anymore. So just leave."

The shock of her uncle letting her stay warrants more tears, especially since the circumstances are that her mother can no longer handle having her around because of all the open wounds between the two Turner women. Heading quietly back up the stairs, Adelaide resolves in letting her walls finally break and the flood of tears to stream down her face as she lays on top of her bed in her now permanent bedroom, and wonder why this all had to happen to her little family. Coming to the conclusion that if she had not pushed her father so hard that day to ride around the bay, he would still be here and her family would be whole again.

"I know I promised you Daddy, but this is all my fault."

She mumbles into her pillow as her mother's words circulate in her mind, knowing that this is going to be one of the hardest things she will ever have to do..but thankfully her uncle is willing to stick by her side and guide her through her grief.
