Chapter 1

Within the harbor of Sydney, Australia the Turner family is working to decompress after a busy and full weekend. Celebrating their only daughters birthday had been an event for the entire local family and friends, and was one of her mothers favorite things to host. Therefore the house has been in shambles since the party, because things needed to be put back where they actually belonged, the left over food needed to be eaten, and the highly populated areas needed to be cleaned. Adelaide was hoping to get out of cleaning, just for a little while by talking her father into one of their oldest traditions.

"Can we go for a ride Dad? Please?!" She begs using her round hazel eyes in a puppy dog effect, which she has learned has a very compelling use on her dad.

Will Turner, was once a daredevil himself and currently owns his built up motorcycle, and it seems he and his daughter seem to share the same love for going fast and pressing the rules. Her mother, Kate, is completely against them, not even sure why she let Will keep his once she realized their daughter was more like him than she could have thought possible, but she knows he is safe on that thing, and so that was the rule. Adelaide could only ride one of those metal death bikes with her father. It was their bonding time. They would take their time around the harbor, window shop along the bay, and even snap a few memorial pictures by the famous opera house, all for Adelaide to place in a small scrapbook she made from each birthday.

"Did you ask your mum? I thought you were going to help her with dinner and clean up?" He says as Kate turns the corner out of the large kitchen with her arms crossed, no doubt hearing a bit of the conversation.

"Ask me what Adelaide?" Adelaide works to hide the habitual flinch of hearing her full name, something that is usually reserved for when she's in some sort of trouble, and attempts to turn her round eyes on her mother.

"If Dad and I could go for a ride..? We didn't go for my birthday, and it is kind of a tradition...and it was my 20th birthday.. Please mum?"

"You know I hate that thing Will." Kate sighs as she turns to her husband, an icy feeling settling in her stomach.

"Mum please! We're always careful when we go—"

"I know that Adelaide. It's the other careless people in the cars I don't trust. They are notorious for not seeing the motorcycles and—" This time Will interrupts his wife's spiral by wrapping her in a comforting hug, to which her body responds naturally, the icy feeling dissipating a little bit.

"Kate. You worry so much. We'll be just fine, I've driven the thing for years. But if it makes you this uncomfortable then we won't go." He can feel the unease waft off his wife of twenty four years, and he knows it's best to appease her when she gets like this.

"But Dad! You said—" Adelaide interjects, her heart suddenly falling to her stomach at the realization of a broken tradition, and less time with her father.

"You did make it quite the tradition Will. Might as well take her, otherwise she may never forgive us." Kate forces a small smile to her husband still unable to shake the chill, but hoping it's just her overreacting like every other year. Adelaide squeals in excitement before wrapping her mother in a tight bear hug, repeatedly thanking the woman for giving them the chance to do what they love best.

"You're welcome, but I want you both back in time for dinner, in one piece, and no spoiling it with ice cream!" Kate chuckles slightly as both Will and Adelaide place a small kiss on her cheek before they head to the garage and find their respective helmets.

"Where to Addy Kat?" Will calls her by his longtime nickname for his daughter, a combination of her first and middle name, as he uncovers the glossy navy bike with chrome trim that he takes special pride in. Adelaide thinks while she straps the teal helmet on over her chestnut brown hair, a trait she shares with both parents, and smiles when she remembers the time of day.

"Can we just go to the harbor? It's always so beautiful in the evening." She admits and they share matching smiles before she gets on behind him, waiting as he straps on his black helmet and fires up the machine.

"Of course sweetheart, but it's not as beautiful as you. Remember that." He says with a wink in her direction and she smiles, knowing that's something she struggles with sometimes, especially after her most recent break up. The last guy cheated on her with some random blonde at the school, and it was enough for Adelaide to second guess if she could ever be someones first choice.

As they adventure down the main road, taking them to the harbor, Adelaide notices the traffic, but isn't phased by it because she knows how good of a rider her dad is, and so she takes in the sights and smells of her home town. As they round the bay, they are stopped by a traffic light and she tightens her hold on her father as an awkward hug and enjoys the feel of the sun on her face. Will begins to activate the throttle as the light changes to green and he pulls forward, shifting into the next gear when Adelaide hears over the rumble of the engine car horns and looking to her right she sees a truck that isn't slowing down—hence the angry horns. Frantically tapping Will on the shoulder to gain his attention over the noise she points to the red battering ram, and he barely has enough time in order to turn the bike just a little more to the right, effectively placing himself between his daughter and the truck heading right in their direction. The impact is sudden and forceful, launching both of them to the other side of the intersection, the bike skittering into the crosswalk, and the rest of the traffic has stopped bystanders scrambling around, calling ambulances and trying to ask the two if they are alright or even if they can hear them. Encouraging the two of them to stay awake for as long as possible, Adelaide asks for her father as the sound of sirens can be heard before she succumbs to the darkness.

The ambulance arrives on scene, quickly transferring the family to the nearest hospital to treat the bleeding and other underlying injuries as the officials show up and arrest the drunken man who has finally realized he is no where near his home and wondering how he got this far away from where he was going. Kate answers a call from an unknown number knowing her family should have been home by now, and the icy feeling returns with an extra sharpness to it. Her hand drops the receiver at the news quickly grabbing her own keys and heading to where her husband and daughter are fighting for their lives.

Kate has spent the last couple hours in the over sanitized and monochromatic rooms of the hospital going between the coffee machine and her daughter's room, when suddenly the motion detector goes off in the room and her coffee is forgotten about as she heads back to the room. She rushes in after a nurse and sees the weakened shell of her daughter attempting to pull the IV from her arm before the nurse is able to calm her and ask her questions to see if she's coherent enough to know where she is. Kate returns to her seat that was placed at her daughters bedside as she waits for the nurse to finish her assessment before she can begin to fret over her for finally waking up, especially after...

"Adelaide? Thank god you're awake honey!" The tears return to Kate's eyes as she carefully kisses her daughters face, the sob suddenly getting stronger.

"Mum...Wha—what happened? I... I remember we were by the bay...and the truck..." Adelaide trails off trying to place all her memories around the pain and blackness, and her mom's sobs increase and she grasps her hand like its her only lifeline.

"Oh honey, I... I didn't believe them when, when they called me. You guys have always been so...careful and, and it just doesn't seem possible..." Through all the pain and medication, Adelaide can feel a sharp, icy pain creating a pit in her stomach, and she needs to get straight answers from her mother.

"You aren't making any sense... What happened, I—I don't remember...where's Dad?" It seems like that was the wrong thing for her to ask as her mothers tears increase, and she attempts to gently caress Adelaide's bruised cheek.

"I... I'm so sorry honey... They weren't sure if you were going to wake from your injuries, be...because your uh, your father...he didn't..."

As Kate dissolves into tears again, Adelaide is left with the icy feeling and if she didn't have the reassurance of the heart monitor, she would have been convinced her heart had stopped too... Thoughts of denial begin to filter through her head, after all this is her dad they're talking about—nothing bad ever happens to him.The machines next to her begin to go off as she begins to hyperventilate, the tears beginning to escape her eyes.

"There...there has to be some sort of mistake... Maybe he's still asleep..." She begins to try and rationalize, but Kate simply grabs her daughters hand in comfort and gently shakes her head as the tears continue.

"I'm sorry baby. They...they tried everything they could when you both arrived... But your father, he took most of the blow... and there was too much internal bleeding...it was even a miracle they got yours to stop. I... I thought I lost the both of you..." Numbness seeps into her bones as she realizes her father, her best friend is really gone and suddenly the guilt begins to blossom telling her that this is all her fault.

"It's all my fault." She mutters through her tears making her mother's head snap in her direction in shock, quickly shacking her head.

"No, Adelaide it wasn't your fault at all. It was a drunk driver running a red light. Don't blame yourself." She attempts to sooth her broken daughter, but the feelings of regret, and guilt are already bubbling up in her badly bruised chest.

"But it is Mum... I was the one that begged and pushed for the ride... I complained and ignored your gut feeling until we left.... It's my fault I didn't warn him earlier...it.. it's just all my fault and now he's gone."

As her sobs rack her battered body causing her to begin hyperventilating again, the nurse comes over a gently injects something into her IV port, helping her to calm down and eventually succumb to a restless sleep.
