Chapter 9

Monday's update might be slightly late. I promise it won't be on Tuesday (unless I forget) but it just might be later in the day if that makes sense :p

When we went back to school on Monday, we found Kayla sitting at our usual table but she wasn't alone. Awstin was beside her, chatting away about something. As I got closer, I heard something about hair dye. "Hey," I said, grinning at Kayla. "So... you two?"

Kayla blushed, looking down at her lap. Awstin was even hiding his face, unable to meet my gaze or speak. "Yeah..."

"Adorable. I really hope he can make you happy."

When Phil joined us and noticed the extra presence, he squeezed my hand, asking if I was alright. I nodded because I was more than alright. I was ecstatic that Kayla had found someone better for her. She really did deserve happiness.

Jack, Mark, Chris and PJ soon joined us and they seemed over the moon when Kayla introduced Awstin as her boyfriend.

Awstin was an awesome guy too. Despite most of his friends being the rebellious punk kids, he was one of the sweetest people I had ever met. He shared a lot of interests with me and the rest of the group which meant he fit in perfectly. He seemed great for Kayla.

Awstin made her smile and giggle with quiet words I couldn't make out. The way her face lit up brighter than the sun showed how delighted she was. I used to make her smile like that. I used to think her blush was adorable too. I just hoped he'd be better for her.

-

I was at Phil's house and we were playing videogames whilst snacking on ridiculously unhealthy food. We classified it as a date, despite his parents being in the adjacent room and us having to pretend to be friends. It wasn't too hard but, at times, I got a strong urge to kiss him. It's not my fault he's so kissable.

"YES!" He shouted as he won what felt like our hundredth game of Mario Kart. I had totally let him win because I had won every single game previous. I let him believe he had won fairly due to his raw- and nonexistent- talent because his face was flowing with an adorable amount of pride. He looked mesmerising and, in that moment, there was nothing I could do to stop myself from kissing the boy.

I cupped his cheeks with my hands, leaning forward to press our lips together. I swear our kisses got better every time.  The sound of his mum's voice made us jolt back, our eyes wide. "Boys, do you-" She had said, clearly just wanting to check on us.

"This is not what it looks like, mum!" Phil practically yelled. I could see that his eyes were glistening with tears and his face had drained of all colour which brought back the familiar feeling of guilt in my stomach.

"You- You were-" She couldn't even get her words out. Phil's dad was then beside her, confused as to why his wife was frozen and tense.

"Mum, I-"

"Are you gay?" I bit my lip, casting my gaze down to my lap. I could only assume Phil nodded because both of his parents gasped. I heard Phil's breathing hitch- a sign he was either crying or on the verge of crying- and took his hand into my own.

"Please don't kick me out." Phil mumbled, his voice weak and so helpless.

"Phil, we would never do that." His dad responded with a deep frown.

"But-"

"We love you no matter what, okay? It's just a bit of a... shock."

"You don't... hate me?"

"No, no, no. We love you."

"I should go," I whispered. Phil slowly nodded so I gently kissed his pale cheek. "Text me if you need me, okay? I love you." I said the last part at an even quieter volume, not wanting to make Phil any more uncomfortable.

-

Around an hour after I got home, Phil called me, obviously in tears. I picked up and laid down on my bed. "Dan," He started with a sniff. His voice was wobbling but that was only expected when someone was crying. "They accept me. They actually accept me. I can't believe it."

"Yeah, I know. I'm so happy for you!" I said, my gaze fixed on my ceiling.

"Wow, when you come over, we don't have to be all secretive anymore!"

"Yeah, that'll be great!"

"I'm so happy. I just- everything's perfect, Dan. I have an amazing boyfriend and group of friends and my parents accept me for who I am."

"Yeah," I smiled softly. "That's awesome."

This is not the end!
