[4] Ambush

You and Keith bumped into the rest on your way down the hall.

"Why are they attacking and how did they get in!?" Hunk asked worriedly.

Pidge replied, "they somehow snuck in. I'm gonna have to do some investigating on that."

"Why don't we just abandon the ship and move to an obscure planet?" you suggested.

Keith narrowed his eyes and responded, "oh, we're not backing out." You crossed your arms and groaned.

"Let's just try to get rid of all the ones we can, then we can fly the Castle away from this part of the galaxy," said Shiro. "Now, come on!" He led the Paladins down a hall in search for the opening of where the Galra got in. You didn't want to be alone, so you just followed them.

"Guys! I see one!" Lance yelled, pointing his Bayard at one of the offenders. After a few long seconds of laser blasts countering off the walls and such—everyone continued looking. Lance then ran beside you. "Don't worry, (Y/N)! I'll protect you~"

You scoffed. "You're seriously hitting on me during a moment of crisis?"

"LANCE!" Keith snapped. "STOP HITTING ON (Y/N) AND GET YOUR BUTT BACK UP HERE!"

Lance let out a tired groan and ran ahead. Shiro was leading the group down a hall before Allura messaged him from the Teladuv.

"Shiro! The Galra somehow came in through one of the hangars. They're near the Black Lion! HURRY!"

Shiro nodded. "Hurry up, guys!" He sped through the hallway at a rapid speed. You tried your best to keep up.

"Remind me, why am I coming with you guys if I have no weapon?" you asked.

"'Cuz you're hot and you're like, the cheerleader of the team," Lance responded.

"Plus she'd be good bait," Keith quipped as his unsheathed his sword.

"WHAT—" you screeched but was then interrupted by Shiro.

"(Y/N), just stay in the back for now. And yeah, we need to get her a weapon now that I think about it. Anyone have anything last minute?"

Keith said, "her face alone could stop a truck."

You asked, "okay, is like, your only goal in life to cause me emotional pain?"

"Hey, what comes around goes around." He simpered. Your jaw was agape.

"STOP FIGHTING, GOSH," Shiro face-palmed. The other Paladins only laughed.

Finally, you all arrived at the hangars. The Paladins ran to the Black Lion with no hesitation. There was a crowd of Galra soldiers ready to attack. Some tried to get inside the Lion, but they failed every attempt. Lance began shooting at them and Keith went in and fought melee. The others defended the Lion with everything they had. And you—well, you were just awkwardly existing.

Suddenly, Keith was thrown back. You were struck by him and this caused you to both fall back on the hard floor. You opened your eyes and saw him on top of you. So, you rolled him off. And in that second, you noticed that an enemy Galra was darting toward you with his longsword out—and in that moment, you stole Keith's Bayard and held the offender at a parry. He was much stronger than you so it only lasted for a few seconds until you fell back down again. Fortuitously, Shiro knocked out the foe before it tried anything else.

"Man, what a rush!" You held your head to prevent the headache you were suffering. Keith rose up and looked at you. You looked down at his sword and returned it to him. "Sorry, I had to use it because that thing was trying to kill us. I hope you don't mind."

"Not at all. . ." he told you. The tone in his voice was surprising because he had never sounded sincere before. He then went back to help out his teammates in the fight. It wasn't long after all the Galra were finally cleared out. Pidge and Hunk managed to patch the ship up so they wouldn't encounter anymore ambushes like this in the future.

"That was scary," Lance remarked as he tried to catch his breath.

"I know, right!?" Hunk agreed. "Didn't you see me go like this and this?" Hunk put his fists out and continued monologuing. You saw that Keith had disappeared. You were able to catch the last bit of his figure in the hallway. So, you ran up and started,

"Hey, uh. Sorry about annoying you so much lately."

Keith turned to you. He rested his helmet on his side in his arms. "Eh. Doesn't really matter." He turned his head shyly. You weren't quite sure what to say next.

"You're. . .a good swordsman."

Keith's eyes widened a bit from your unexpected compliment. He replied, "uh, thanks. You're not so bad yourself. . .for someone who's obviously never wielded a sword."

A satisfied smile appeared on your face. "Perhaps you could teach me the basics sometime?"

"That is if you're willing to listen to every word I say."

"I think I could handle it," you grinned kittenishly.

Keith looked determined. But someone interjected. "Keith! (Y/N)!" Shiro called. You both turned to him, confused. "We need to get (Y/N) a weapon, remember?"

"Oh, yeah!" I nodded. "Whatcha got?"

"Well, we don't want to give you anything too dangerous," Shiro softly chuckled. "So, what are you looking for? An air-ranged weapon or a melee weapon?"

"Melee, I guess."

"Well, I have this!" Lance pulled up a small plastic slingshot. It looked like a child's toy. You raised your eyebrow. He handed it to you. "Go ahead. Try it out~" You nodded. So, with a simple pull of the rubber band, you shot Lance in the head with a pebble.

"OW!" he grunted. "THAT'S NOT HOW YOU—"

Keith tried to contain his laughter, but the others were just in hysteria. You snickered and handed the slingshot back. "Nah, I don't think it's the right thing for me. Also, I said a melee weapon."

"Here." Pidge handed you a pair of scissors. You took them and said,

"What? Am I going to give them haircuts by force?"

Pidge shrugged. You swung the scissors around with your finger. "Hey! No playing with scissors!" Shiro swiped them away and hid them in his pocket.

"Take this!" Hunk handed you a toy lightsaber.

You took it and held it upright. Turning to Keith, you quoted, "KEITH, I AM YOUR FATHER."

"NO—" he screamed. You shrugged and threw it back to Hunk.

"Guys, I need something. . .useful?"

"Alright. . ." Shiro headed off. "Let me see if I have anything."

After waiting for a bit, Shiro came back with a proper melee weapon. He held a medium-length sword in his hands. He gifted it to you. The color scheme was pristine ivory and (F/C).

"Nice," you received it and held it in your hand. You carefully waved it around to study its structure.

"Yeah, Allura had this in storage somewhere. I guess Keith will teach you how to use it because he's good and lonely."

Keith spat out his drink. "HEY!"

"It'll be a good bonding thing for you and (Y/N) because I can't stand you guys always yapping all the time."

"Whatever, we'll start training tomorrow," Keith said. You nodded and turned to Shiro.

"Thanks for the sword! I'll be sure to unlock its secrets in no time!" You extended your arm at a prompt speed—which made you accidentally lose control of the sword, causing it to barely miss Lance.

"AAAA!!!" Lance ducked.

"Welp," you took Keith's drink which was placed on the floor and took a sip. "Wait, who's is this?"

Pidge responded, "Keith's—"

You spit it out and threw the cup down. "Eeee, that's gross. Anyways, whatever. I'm gonna take a nap. Today was rough." You walked away.

You were excited about having your very own sword! Though, you were a bit worried about the training with Keith tomorrow. He didn't seem too. . .patient or teacherly. However, it may have been the only way to get some kind of lessons around here.
