Emma's POV

"Honestly, you two worry to much" I tell my mother and little sister. My name is Emma Vane, eldest daughter of Mrs Charlotte Vane and older sister of Romilda Vane. I am blind. I wasn't born blind though. I used to have perfect vision. But about two years ago when I was nine. My father and I were in an accident, he didn't make it and I was left blind. Saint Mungo's they did everything they could to try save my sight.

Mum even consulted muggle doctors to see if they had a cure. But no luck, mum did hear about a seeing eye dog though to help me get around and books made for blind people to read. So mum got me one last year and I named him Coal. He's a black Labrador according to mum and Romilda. Mum also got my books custom made for me so that I can still learn magic.

Speaking of magic it's time for my first year at Hogwarts. Mum had all my school books made into Braille so that I can read them. I got my wand. Cedar 11 and 3/4s inches long with as dragon heart string core. According to Mr Ollivander. It has a smooth handle, but I feel ridges above it before it goes smooth again.

I'll also be given an assistant in potions and herbology to help with practical parts of the classes. I've been excused from astronomy and flying as I can't see. So I only had DADA, Potions, Charms, Transfiguration, Herbology and History. Which sucks as I loved flying before I went blind. I also enjoyed star gazing with my little sister telling her about the constellations.

"But you'll be alone" Romilda tells me.

"No I won't, I'll have Coal with me" I remind her. I'd gotten special permission to bring my guide dog. Which will help a lot as I hear their are many stairs at Hogwarts. "What's the time? I'm packed and don't want to miss the train" I tell them. Changing the subject.

"It's 10:15" mum tells me. "If we leave now we'll be there in half an hour" she explains.

"Then lets go" I say smiling as I grab Coal's harness. He leads me to the car as mum put my trunk into the boot. I get into the front seat and Coal gets into the back with Romilda. She is two years younger then me and will start at Hogwarts in my third year. I pray we're in the same house. I buckle myself up and mum drives us to the train station.

Half an hour later we arrive at the busy train station. Mum got a trolley for my trunk while Romilda stayed with Coal and I. "What house do you think you'll be in?" Romilda asks me.

"No idea, maybe Ravenclaw or Gryffindor" I tell her shrugging. Our father was in gryffindor and mother was in ravenclaw. Mum returns and puts the trunk on the trolley. Then pushes it as we follow her. Well I follow Coal.

"OK, Emma I shall take you through the barrier as Coal may not" mum tells me. She had explained the barrier looked like a brick pillar. Coal has been trained to avoid them. I nod my head and let Romilda take Coal. Mum places me in front of her and places my hands on the trolley. She guides me through the barrier.

I hear Coal bark in alarm before we passed through the barrier. Not long after Coal pulls Romilda through. He comes straight to me and sniffs me. "I'm ok boy" I assure him as I pat his head.

"Lets get you a compartment" mum tells me. I nod my head. She took my trolley while I hold Coal's harness again. I hear many people around us greeting each other or saying goodbye. I also hard a few whispers about Coal and I. But I ignore them. We board the train and Romilda finds me an empty compartment. Mum places my trunk in the luggage rack and hugs me. I then get a hug from Romilda before they leave the train.

I sit down by what I guess it the window. Coal lays on the ground his head resting by my feet looking at the door. As I feel the train start to move I hear the compartment door open. "Sorry, we thought the compartment was empty" a young girl says. She sounds like she's about my age.

"It's fine, I would like some company" I say looking at the door way.

"I'm Hermione Granger and this is Neville Longbottom" the girl says.

"Emma Vane" I say. "This is Coal" I add pointing to him.

"You're blind" Hermione says in realization.

"Yes" I say. "Is this your first year also?" I ask them.

"Yes" a boy says. He must be Neville. "Is your dog friendly with other animals?" he asks me.

"Oh yes, my sister has a cat and my mother has an owl. We also have a toad pond" I tell him.

"Good, I'm gonna just check on my toad Trevor" he tells me. I nod my head. Soon I hear frantic shuffling of clothes.

"Something wrong Neville?" Hermione asks him.

"I can't find Trevor, I had him in my pocket" he whines.

"We'll go search for him" she tells him.

"I'd help, but kind of can't see" I tell them sheepishly.

"It's ok" Neville tells me in understanding.

"If you have something with Trevor's scent, Coal might be able to track him" I state.

"Yeah, I have his pillow" he states and I hear him shuffle through his trunk.

"Coal find" I say and I hear him sniff something. "Good luck guys" I say and I hear the door close. I sigh and lean back in my chair. Wishing I'd got Romilda to get out one of my school books so that I could read. As I'm bored.

Soon the other two return with no toad. "Sorry Neville, but I'm sure he will turn up soon" I assure him.

"Thanks Emma" he says as Coal rests his head on my knee. I pat his head.

"I spoke to the conductor and we should be arriving soon" Hermione tells me.

"Ok" I say and grab Coal's harness. I grab the bundle of clothes beside me. "Bathroom" I say and he leads me out of the room. He guides me down the hallway and soon stops facing the left. I stretch my hand out and feel the panel. I feel the word female written in braille. I smile and go in with Coal. I find a cubicle and get changed. Before rejoining Coal and hear two girls fawning over him. "Heel" I say and he comes to my side. I grab his harness.

"Is he yours?" a girl asks.

"He's gorgeous" another says.

"Thank you, he is Coal" I tell them.

"I can't believe you can bring him to school, you're so lucky" the first girl says.

"How rude, we have not introduced ourselves. I'm Padame Patil and this is my twin sister Parvati" the second girl says.

"Don't worry if you have trouble telling us apart, most people can't" Parvati states.

"Oh you're identical twins" I say in realization. "My name is Emma Vane" I tell them. "Anyway, I gotta go" I add.

"Of course, hope we're in the same house" Parvati says and I hear them leave. Coal guides me back to our compartment and I sit back down. For the rest of the journey the three of us make small talk. Until the train pulls into Hogsmeade station. The other two stand either side of me as we got off of the train.

"First years over here!" I hear a booming voice call. Hermione and Neville turn me towards the voice. Coal guides me over. "Ah you must be Miss Vane, you will be riding with me" the man says. I nod my head. Soon we're all in boats and I feel them moving across the lake. I smile as I let my hand run over the top of the water.

I jump when I feel a slimy tentacle touch my hand. "You're alright, that's just the giant squid. He won't hurt you" the man assures me. I nod my head, but don't touch the water again. When I feel us dock he helps me out of the boat and I grab Coal's harness. "Right this way, follow me" the man says and I hear him walk away. Coal follows him as I feel two people fall in step beside me.

"Did you enjoy the boat ride?" Hermione asks me. I nod my head. I soon feel us work on stone path way instead of the gravel path. "Steps are coming up, need help" Hermione asks me.

"I got it" I assure her. I soon feel the harness tilt up and step onto the first step. Coal keeps a slow steady pace to ensure I don't lose my balance. I soon feel us level out and sigh. We're no longer on a staircase. The man passes us to a witch, named Professor McGonagall. Mum had told me she's stern, but really cares about her students.
