"Now, you're sure you're okay, Emma?" Aunt Caroline bustled into the living room with a mug of steaming hot latte in her hands. Emma's hair rattled her car keys.
"Poor darling, you still look dreadful. I'm awfully sorry about what just happened between you and James. Dealing with a friend zone really takes a little time to heal. I'll bring you some little treats when you get your appetite back. Do you want me to pick up a couple of books from the bookstore for you dear?"
Emma nodded and felt cared-for. It was eight at night and she'd reached the fragile-but-recovering stage. Every muscle in her body still ached, but she managed to finish a whole carton of orange juice in the fridge, and keep down two full glasses of plain water. Best of all, she no longer felt heartbroken about what had just happened between her and James.
"I'll be back by ten-thirty," Aunt Caroline said, who was off to the grocery store to purchase some kitchenware for her kitchen. "You just take it easy, watch a bit of television, have a good rest darling."
Oh, it was nice to be cosseted. And Aunt Caroline had taped the whole ten seasons of Friends for her last night. Snuggling up under her duvet on the couch Emma waved the remote at the television screen and determinedly didn't think about James. A couple of hours in the company of Jennifer Aniston and David Schwimmer was just what she needed to cheer her up.
The doorbell rang an hour later.
"Ross? Ross? Ross? Ross? Okay, whenever you're ready. And you're the father by the way but you got that." Jennifer said on the television.
Frantically, Emma turned off the television and wrestled her way out her duvet, she hurriedly ran her hands over her sticking-up hair. It might be James, come back to apologize and tell her he still loved her.
Well it might be.
Emma slowly opened the front door and spotted her boyfriend James standing on the doorstep feeling guilty for what he had done to her.
"You? I thought I told you not to speak to me ever again." She shouted, closing the door behind him angrily.
"Wait, Emma! Emma." James called out behind the door.
"Go away!" She exclaimed as she sunk her body onto the cold cement floor crying.
"Can we stop acting like children and just talk? Please?" James begged miserably.
"Oh now you want to talk? It's a little too late for that James! Just leave me alone!"
"Emma, please open the door."
Emma wiped away the tears in her eyes and sniffled.
"Emma, if you're still there. Then please just listen, five minutes is all I ask. I promise. Then I'll leave you for good."
A tear rolled down her cheek as she heard the words coming out of his mouth.
"Emma, listen... I..." he sighed.
"I'm very happy I got to know you. Despite your flaws... You are the most wonderful person I've ever met. If it all ends here then at least, let me say goodbye. Look... I... I'm not sorry for what I did. I'm not sorry if that hurt you. What you did was so unfair. But then I guess then, I am so sorry for being your friend. I'm sorry for being there for you and caring for you. I'm so sorry for coming into your life and I'm so sorry for falling for you." He said truthfully behind the door.
Emma sniffled despairingly.
"I'll be moving to Los Angeles next week. Please take care of yourself. You won't have me to look at you anymore. I'm doing this because I love you. Remember to feed Milo every four hours. He needs to be played and cuddled after every meal. I don't know how the heck he survived this long with you. I guess he's a playful little puppy just like you. After tonight, you'll no longer see me. Or hear from me. Be good and be well. Goodbye, Emma."
James left Emma's doorstep and walked in the rain with his hands shoved into his coat pocket depressed.
Emma sunk her head into her hands and sobbed. She just couldn't believe what James had said to her a few minutes ago. She was in love with him and couldn't decide which one was wrong and right.
Ten minutes later, she finds herself looking through her photo gallery on her phone. She wished she had let James take more pictures of them together so she would have more to look at now. God she does have it bad, like Stephanie said. She felt like she's slowly losing her mind, and the most fucked up part is, she doesn't care how crazy she'd be as long as
She took a deep breath and sniffled.
"James." she whispered softly.
"James?"
"James..."
"James?"
James!" she yelled as she opened the front door behind her and ran after James in the rain.
James!" she cried running to him.
"James!" she panted as she continued in her tracks running to him vigorously but then she tripped and landed onto the ground in pain.
"Emma! What are you doing? What kind of an idiot runs out in the rain with no shoes and umbrella?" James questioned angrily at her.
Emma hugged James tightly and cried on his chest. She pushed him away. "Idiot! How could you just leave me after saying all that to me? God I just wanted to slap you. You... You jerk!" Emma shouted in pain.
"What? You said you didn't want to have anything to do with me anymore." James said looking down at her small figure.
"No, I... I..." she stuttered.
"What do you want from me? Seriously! Because I'm tired of playing your stupid games!" James exclaimed.
"This was never supposed to happen! You were never supposed to happen. We both agreed to be friends only, this isn't fair! You can't make me the villain here! What am I supposed to do huh? Tell me! What am I supposed to feel? I am lost right now! So many things have happened in these past few months! All these years... All these years I'd tried to fit in. To finally be accepted. If I admit these feelings then it'll mean everything I did was for nothing and I would have betrayed my family, myself and everyone else!" She cried softly.
"You lied to me then you're lying to yourself now! Ever since we met, you've never been honest with me, yourself, anyone! For once in your life, make your own decision and live
your life the way you want! How dense and stupid can you be?" James asked furrowing his eyebrows at her indignantly.
"It's not that easy! It's... It's much more complicated! You... You don't understand." she cried.
"What's there to understand? What's there not to understand? What do you want?"
"I-I..." Emma stuttered.
"What do you want?"
"What do you want?" James asked.
What do you want? Emma!" He yelled vexedly.
"What do you want?"
James sighed and placed his hand on his forehead exhausted.
"I'm going to ask one last time, and your answer will decide everything. There will be no going back. Understand?"
"What do you me-"
James sealed her with a soft kiss on the lips.
"James, I... but you didn't..." Emma gasped and flabbergasted.
"Push me away then," he said.
"No," she said as they kissed again.
They pulled away and breathed slowly.
"Looks like there's no going back."
"You liar! Can you accept me? All of me? Am I really acceptable? Are you really sure you want me?" Emma questioned as she looked up at him straight in his eyes pondering.
James placed his hand on Emma's left cheek and smiled.
"I have never been more sure, I've never wanted anything more. I promise to take care of you, of this beautiful life. It will be alright from now on." He grinned.
"Thank you," Emma replied as she flashed a smile at James and gave him a tight hug.
