It wasn't meant to be this way. It wasn't meant to be just Emma and James, locked away in their cabin for the week. It was meant to be a group getaway, but mother nature was a fickle bitch, and she had thwarted her plans. James had asked Emma to go on up ahead with him to open the cabin, turn on the heat and crank on the water. Not wanting him to make the trip alone, she'd joined him.

It started decently enough, floating around the hardwood floors with something close to wonder on her face. With floor to ceiling windows in the living room, it felt as if she could reach out and touch the snow covered pines that were just before her. The fire on the back wall hissed, heat puffing through the room and licking the back off her ankles almost affectionately.

"The kitchen through here," he muttered, waving her to follow him.

As hard as it was, Emma pulled herself away from the window and followed the echoing of his footsteps. The floor plan was open, something she admired about the cabin. It somehow made the place seem bigger not that it was small by any means. Lighter, more open, perhaps. With the stainless steel appliances and cozy breakfast nook, she shot James a grin.

"No wonder you've kept us all away. We'd never leave."

He chuckled, shaking his head and backing himself up into the counter. "You've not even seen the bedrooms yet."

"Oh?" A blush, that had no business being there, sprouted over her cheeks.

He grinned at her, a cocky smirk crossing those pink lips. "Mmm hmm. Follow me."

He waved Emma on again and she followed in his wake, steps creaking over the wood. He moved down a long hallway, hooking to the left and up the stairs. The hall was small but was equipped with three bedroom doors. With a silent wave, he gestured her to explore.

The first room was simple enough. Large bed, chest table and large windows, it painted a very pretty picture of the cabin in the woods. The next room was grander, the top of the bed covered in thin white linen that hung down the sides carelessly, but added a sensuality to the room that the other lacked.

There was a small balcony with large double doors that beckoned her to visit. It would be wonderful to sleep with the doors cracked tonight, she thought, letting the fresh mountain air in.

"You can sleep in here," he said from behind her, his breath stirring the hair at the nape of her neck. "I figured you'd like the bed."

"Oh, oh. Okay."

"Want to see my room?" His blue eyes were wide and maybe the slightest bit mischievous in the dim hallway.

"Sure."

He opened the last door and beamed at her. "My castle."

Castle, it was. The bed was twice the size of the others in a deep mahogany. The bedspread was a pristine white, matching the snow outside. Emma moved about the bed, staring down at the red sheets that screamed out at her. James was not overly sensual, and the thought of his tan skin against those red sheets had Emma blushing for an entirely different reason.

The door off to the side led to a bathroom that had her nearly weeping in relief. The dark stone tub that sat in the corner coaxed her to come closer and to have a soak, warm up her cold muscles and relax.

"Grand, isn't it? Love having a soak at night before bed." Again, his voice was too close to her ear and she skirted him, leaving the bathroom and back into the kitchen where the ground was more neutral.

"This place is amazing. What time are the other's meant to be here?"

He checked his phone, thumb moving over the screen as he paged through his texts. He read for a while and whatever news he received had not been pleasant.

"They aren't. It's snowing back home. Looks like it's going to reach us now," he murmured.

He brushed past her and back into the living room to the large window that took up the far wall. He should have looked small against such a large window, but he was all she saw. Hands tucked in his pockets, rounded shoulders and a strong back, James seemed to eat up another wise large space. When the flakes began to fall, he sighed. They had called for snow, but it wasn't supposed to come until later in the night, close to early morning.

"It's just us then?" Emma squeaked, thinking back to the intimate bedrooms that lingered just up the stairs.

"Looks like. We can head out in the morning if this blows over." He turned and faced her, a lopsided grin over his face. "Until then, we're in for the night. Any ideas?"

Any ideas? Any ideas? Emma were full of ideas. Clad in his dark maroon jumper and dark jeans, he looked so warm and so inviting.

"Why don't we pop in a movie?" he asked instead and shutting down the images of the both of them curled on the couch under a heavy blanket.

"Sure," Emma sighed in defeat. "Why not?"

The night passed without hiccup. Laying in her bed and hearing James moving around in the room next to her caused some form of distress but other than that, Emma slept soundly. When she woke and rubbed the sleep out of her eyes, she stumbled her way down the cold wooden steps and into the kitchen to start a kettle.

"Shit."

The muffled curse had her pausing as she filled the kettle and lifting her head. Setting it aside, Emma moved down the hall to the front door.

"James, what are you doing?" A shiver had Emma wrapping her arms around herself, pulling the ends of her sweater down over her fingers.

"I can't sleep..." he replied turning to look at her vehemently.

"Hey Emma," James whispered while softly nudging her shoulder. Emma looked at the clock and noticed that it was three in the morning.

"James? Why are you waking me up? It's late, go back to sleep!"

"No, wake up. Let's go outside," He said sounding far too excited and far too awake at this hour. "We have to go see the stars."

"Are you crazy? I need sleep."

"This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, we have to do this, Emma, come on." He said with puppy dog eyes while almost picking her up from the bed. He was being overdramatic, but if he really wanted to do this, then she'd be the supportive girlfriend and accompany him.

"Fine, let's go look at the stars." Emma finally give in. Maybe they'll just go on and come back to bed right away. Maybe it won't take long.

"Yes! You won't regret it." He said while kissing her on the cheek.

They were staying at a cabin in the woods for the weekend. The place was a four hour drive from the city, and it was absolutely stunning, with beautiful picturesque landscapes and greenery. However, it was too cold at night. Good thing they decided to take a blanket with them. Emma was just wearing a fluffy onesie, and James was wearing his red onesie too. They got them before the trip, matching onesies. Probably the only couple thing they owned. They were kinda cute.

But the cold breeze was still piercing through the fabric. She snuggled close to James while they were walking, just to feel his warmth.

"Are you cold, Emma?" He asked looking at her flashing a sweet smile on his face.

"A little, I didn't expect it to be this chilly here." It was the winter time, and the cabin was close to a lake. "Do you know where we're going?" She asked James. He only brought a flashlight.

"Yeah, I saw this plain field up ahead when we first arrived." He said, while wrapping the blanket around the both them and putting his arm around her. "Oh there it is!" He's way too excited about this. It was nice to see him happy. Emma smiled at him and held his hand.

They decided to sit right in the middle of the open field that appeared to go on forever. James turned off the flashlight as the moonlight illuminated the dark skies. When they finally lay down to look at the stars, they saw the most beautiful constellation. It was breathtaking, to say the least.

The warmth from the fire radiated over the two of them, flaming embers soaring high into the air. They swirled together in a dance of freedom from the pit before vanishing into thin air.

"Wow..." was all Emma managed to say.

"This is stunning," James stated.

"I can't believe it, living in the city sometimes makes you forget how pretty the sky at night." She said while unable to take her eyes away from the sky view.

"I know...we should do this more often!"

"Yeah, I'm all in!" Emma smiled at James.

"I'm glad we get to share moments like this," James stated while drifting away in deep thought.

Sitting here in silence wasn't awkward at all. James was the best company in the world and Emma wouldn't mind doing any activity as long as it's with him. She looked at him, and she saw happiness, love, joy, and everything right in the world. He was beyond special, and now looking at the stars and looking at him, she felt like he transcends this world. He's ethereal.

The stars shone down onto the angel beside Emma as he looked up at the heavens, the home he used to know. "I remember when my father made them. In the beginning, he created light. He wanted something still shining even in the dark, so he created the moon and stars."

Emma smiled, looking up and laying her head on his shoulder. "Sometimes I wish I could have been there...to have watched everything be created. It must have been amazing. All of the magic and power he holds in his hands..."

"What are you thinking about?" James broke the silence between them.

"Nothing..." Emma replied turning to face him happily.

"Are you okay?" he questioned with a smirk.

"Yeah," she smiled at him courteously.

He smiled and pulled her close to his chest. Emma could hear his heartbeat.

It was moments like this that felt far greater than anything Emma could have ever imagined. And it was a simple moment like this that made her realize how lucky they were to have found each other. Among all the stars in the sky, Emma noticed that two of them were shining the brightest.

Emma turned to James and slowly leaned in. James was doing the same, she couldn't say anything. There's nothing she could've said. Instead, she reached for both sides of his face and pulled him down to her. Their lips almost touched but she pulled it away.

"I'm sorry, I can't do it..." Emma looked away shyly.

"What's the matter?" James questioned looking at her bewilderedly.

"James, it's just that you're my best friend and I can't just simply kiss you, it's not right. I'm sorry." Emma said feeling guilty about what had just happened a few minutes ago.

"It's totally fine. I understand..." James smiled scratching the back of his neck nervously.

"Thank you," she smiled and continued to look at the night sky.

She opened her mouth to speak, but a streak of bright white shot across the black night sky. "Look! A shooting star!" Emma gasp of excitement caused a smile to form on the angel's face. "Make a wish!"

He closed his eyes, confused, only copying what she did. He didn't know what to wish for, if he was honest. He knew that whatever he wanted wasn't going to come true anyways; it wasn't how the world worked. Despite the thoughts, he played along with the folklore of wishing upon a shooting star.

"Look at those two stars!" Emma pointed to them.

"They're shining just for us."

James smiled and kissed the top of her head. Emma then closed her eyes and take it all in. A moment she'll never forget.
