I smile staring up at Anubis House, first day of school. My scholarship was delayed because of some issues regarding I don't know. All I know was that the money was delayed and now that it's paid for, I'm here. Ringing the doorbell, I wait for the door to open and before I do so I take a photo then post it on Facebook and Instagram. I don't know why, but there is something about this house. Like there's something calling me here, that there's something it wants to say.
The door opens after a moment to a tall man with dark hair and facial hair with blue eyes in a suit. He has warm ivory colored skin and I think she's got to be in his early forties "Hi" holding my hand out "I'm Emily Prescott"
The man has a stern expression as he looks at his pocket watch that he has, looking at it then to me he silently judges me with a harsh look "Your late, two weeks"
"There was an issue with the money arriving" I wave my hand in the air "Your Mr. Rodenmaar, right? The owner?"
"Caretaker" he corrects me "but I may as well be the owner" moving to the side to let me in "come in" grabbing my hardcover suit case with a skull and flowers, I walk in with that and my black travel duffel bag.
When I enter the foyer, I pull out the waterproof camera my mom got me for my birthday before she died. "Sorry" looking at Mr. Rodenmaar "this place is just so beautiful and I'm a photographer, when I see something beautiful I take a photo of it"
"No need to apologize" nodding his head as he looked around the foyer "Anubis House is beautiful is a sight to behold"
"I bet this house holds a bunch of stories" putting my camera away, I can take more photos later.
"I am" he introduced himself "Victor Rodenmaar the caretaker"
"Victor Rodenmaar" looking up to see on the staircase see a woman with a welcoming smile upon her face-she has honey colored skin, short black hair and brown eyes. She's a few inches shorter than me so if I had to guess five two, maybe five three "I hope you're giving our new girl your warmest of welcomes" she jumps onto the floor beside me, she's got to be in her thirties I'm guessing "as warm as he gets anyway-hello Sweetie, I'm Trudy Rehman. Your house-mother"
"Hi" holding my hand out, we shake hands "I'm Emily. Emily Prescott"
"Welcome to Anubis House" she motions to the house, though I'm getting this weird feeling just by being here "it's only slightly spookier than the brochure..."
"I think it's amazing" shaking my head, looking over "is that an actual Sarcophagus?!"
"It is" Victor confirms "this house unlike the others has only a few things that modernize it from the others, such as the electrical and the tv in the living room. The Anubis Estate was originally built in 1890 although it wasn't actually named Anubis until 1922"
"Ohhh!" Trudy let's out a laugh "she doesn't care about all that boringness, Victor! She's a teenager, it's all about hormones and vampires"
Letting out a laugh "Actually, I do enjoy history along with fantasy" looking at Victor "what was the Estate's original name if not Anubis?"
"The Frobisher-Smythe" he says "estate"
"You can give her the history lesson later" Trudy waves her hand "first let's get her settled in and introduce her to everyone" she brings me into this living room with two three seated leather couches and four armchairs, an old fireplace that I see has not been modernized, a telescope and some dressers filled with who knows what? I then see a portrait of eight people in modern day school uniforms "are these the other inhabitants?"
Nodding her head "Yes, the one on the far left"
"You" Victor takes the portrait down "in all due time" looking at Trudy who grabbed a jacket that was on a sofa.
"This place is so beautiful" I say "you don't find many houses like these in Texas"
"Texas?" Trudy asks "I had a friend who is also from Texas but you both don't have the same accent"
"I get that a lot" nodding my head "I was originally born in Texas but military family, we moved around a lot-so I don't have that thick southern accent"
"Oh!" She exclaims "where have you been to?"
Nodding my head "basically between Colorado, Texas, California-well those are the major three. Especially Texas and California"
"You must have a bunch of stories" motioning to this dining area with eight seats "now this is where I serve breakfast and evening meals, be sure to tell some of your stories to the others during one of those times or whenever-shaken things up from sometimes the usual silence"
Looking over, I see this portrait of two people and this symbol behind them "Are these the original owners?" Why else would there be a portrait here?
"Yes" Mr. Rodenmaar confirms "Robert and his wife Louisa, Robert is the son of the man who built this estate Julien Frobisher-Smythe"
"What's that symbol?" I ask pointing to the symbol between their heads behind them.
"That is the Eye of Horus" he tells me, really? I thought the eye was more a different symbol?
"Isn't the Eye of Horus" I ask "a symbol of protection? Against evil? In sixth grade my history class, we did this whole assignment on Ancient Egypt and the gods and goddesses, the pharaohs, lots of different stuff-it's why I know this house is named after the God of Death whose animal form was a jackal"
Nodding his head impressed "Yes"
"Right" Trudy claps her hands together "now, let's show you where you'll be sleeping"
"Is it ready?" Mr. Rodenmaar asks, she nods her head "Alright, follow me" going into the foyer, Trudy grabs my skull suit case while I grab my duffel bag.
"What a interesting suitcase" she looks at it "very goth and pretty, you and your roommate Patricia will get along just fine hopefully. She too loves the darker side of life"
Nodding my head, we go upstairs "The boys rooms are downstairs, we don't want anyone wandering around after nine o clock and all lights must be out by ten"
"Are there any places I shouldn't wander off to?" I ask
He nods his head "That would be the attic and cellar" when we look into an office that has a door leading someplace "this is my room which is strictly out of bounds to be in unless you have any questions or anything you need to tell me" we go through the one hall and I see a hall leading to a door that opens by itself with stairs.
"Does that lead to the attic?" I ask "is anyone up there?"
"Yes" Mr. Rodenmaar sees this and is curious "and no, no one should be up there" Trudy stays by my side as Mr. Rodenmaar calls out "anyone who is up there is in a lot of trouble" he goes upstairs and after a few minutes comes back down "must have forgotten to lock this door" I see a woman with light brown hair or dirty blonde in an Egyptian like attire smile to me. She motions to keeping silent as Mr. Rodenmaar closes then locks the door.
"This is your room" Trudy opens the door to one and we go inside, I see an empty bed.
"Whose is this?" I ask seeing a phone and bunny.
"That would be Joy's" Trudy says "she left us rather suddenly"
"She might want these back" I say "is she still here or"
"I'll forward them" Mr. Rodenmaar takes the two from me "to her parents" the door closes and we see a picture of two girls.
"Mr. Rodenmaar? Is this Joy?" I ask pointing to the one girl who I feel like it is.
"It is" He says "and you may call me Victor" Nodding my head, he takes the photo and leaves "your trunks have arrived, I shall leave you to unpack"
"Gotcha" giving a thumbs up
I put my skull beauty bedspread on, it's this really fluffy duvet set that I love for twin size beds. Then I put up my two posters, one of a red haired woman holding a skeleton man with roses around them and a bloody rose. I also bring out my mini fridge that I stock with food and drinks, underneath my bed I have these three storage bins-one filled with makeup, my skin care, oral care and feminine hygiene products. The second bin is filled with my scrapbooking supplies and color supplies with some coloring books. Hey! I may almost be an adult but coloring is very therapeutic and relaxing. In the last bin, it's for my school supplies and other stuff. Thankfully there is enough room for my large bean bag that I use as a bed sometimes with how big and fluffy it can be.
Pulling out a photo of my family-I look sadly at my mom. She's gone, died a few years ago. She was with this team assigned to do something, they don't really tell you since it's confidential but all I know is that mom died fighting for her country and those she loved.
When the door opens, I see this girl with dark red hair with some blue strands, she's wearing a school uniform and black floral stockings. She has warm ivory skin with blue eyes. This must be Patricia "Hi" waving my hand "I'm Emily"
"Who are you?" Is she stupid? I just said my name "Where's Joy?" Looking around the room "Where are her things? What's going on?"
"I was told she left" shaking my head crossing my arms "that's it"
"What?!" She tries to take my things but I stop her "Move! Your not my new roommate! Joy is!"
"Talk to Victor or Trudy" pointing to the door "about your friend, I don't know anything"
"Bullshit!" She tries to remove my things but I grab her finger and bend it that she screams falling to the floor "let go!" One good thing about growing up with military parents, they train you how to defend yourself "Let go!"
"What" Victor walks in demanding seeing me hold Patricia's middle finger with her on the floor crying "is going on?"
"Keeping this girl from taking my stuff and throwing it out" I tell him "she's wondering where her friend Joy went" letting go, Patricia stands up holding her finger crying.
"Where is she?! What is going on?" Turning her head to glare at me "Why is she here?" She reminds me a bit of my self absorbed cousin.
"She's also really stupid apparently" I add "I told her my name but it isn't registering"
Victor looks at her annoyed "This is Emily Prescott your new roommate, Joy's parents earlier this afternoon to remove her from school. Other than that I don't know much else"
"Why would they do that?" She asks. Spend more time with their kid? Don't have the money to send her here anymore? Maybe they don't like Patricia? Found a better school? Anyone of the things I suggested...
"Joy would never leave without saying goodbye" she says
"Maybe she didn't have the time?" I suggest to her "have you tried calling her?" She glares at me "try doing that"
