Carter

"Hi, is Emery here?" I asked the man, who opened the door.

"Yeah she is, come on in here son we need to talk," he said.

As I stepped inside, I could see Emery standing on the stairs and she looked as if she had been crying. There was a lot of tension in the room, and you could tell that everyone was in a bad mood.

"How are you Carter? I'm Adam by the way," he introduced himself, as he extended his hand to shake mine.

"Nice to meet you," I said, then shook his hand.

"I believe you met Jess?" he asked.

"I met her the other night, how are you?"

"I'm ok... thanks for asking," she responded.

"So Carter, I'm not sure if Emery told you about me? but I'm a good friend of the family, and I've been looking out for her for some time now," he started to explain.

"Please Adam... don't do this," Emery sighed, as a tear dropped down her face.

"Is everything ok?" I started to wonder.

Adam took a deep breath and looked over at her, and for a brief second they stared at each other.

"Please..." she whispered to him, as she shook her head back and forth.

"Carter..." he exhaled, as he looked back at me, "last year Emery's mother..."

"Stop...!" she yelled, as more tears dropped down her face.

"Em..." Jessica moaned.

"I can't do this anymore, I'm leaving!" she cried, as she grabbed her keys and darted out of the front door.

"EMERY...!" we all shouted from the porch, as she jumped in her car and pulled off. "What's going on?!" I asked in confusion, and became frustrated.

Jessica and Adam both started to explain about what happened last year with Emery and her mother, and how it affected her. My eyes grew big, I couldn't believe what I was hearing, as I leaned back against the rail and continued to listen.

"She thinks you were there Carter," Jessica moaned.

"What!" I said in shock, "where did she go?!" I started to panic.

Adam stared at me as Jessica dropped her head, I knew then where she had gone.
