Chapter 33. The Dance
The band announced that there was a song request, as I started to head back to Carter... We're going to slow it down a bit for all you love birds out there, so grab your partner and head to the middle of the floor, we got a request to play Fix You by Coldplay!
"Oh my god! I love this song..." I said to myself, as I started to push through the crowd to get to Carter.
"You're good now?" he asked.
"I love this song... you gotta dance with me," I said, standing in front of him extending my hand.
"Oh no... I don't slow dance," he laughed.
"Come on... you're always up for something new, remember?" I said with a slick smile and trying to convince him with his own words. His eyebrow raised as he focused on me. "Please..." I said begging, and still smiling. He took a deep breath, and finally gave in, "alright, but you owe me for this."
"Ok," I responded, happily.
I grabbed his hand, and we walked to the middle of the floor. He then pulled me in and wrapped his hands around my waist, as I wrapped mine around his neck. Swaying back and forth and gazing into his eyes... I was at peace, at least in this moment.
"How am I doing?" he asked softly, with a smirk on his face.
"You're doing fine..." I assured him, "just breathe..." I whispered, as I laid my head on his chest. There was this sound of strength, boom..., boom..., boom..., boom..., an echoing rhythm beating inside of him that I haven't heard in a long time.
Slowly I closed my eyes and zoned into the beating rhythm, then suddenly I wasn't dancing to the music, I was dancing to his heartbeat. As he gripped my waist tighter, I glanced back up at him and there was this unfamiliar feeling inside of me, like a beat or two. Slowing down from swaying back and forth, I dropped a hand from around his neck and grabbed my chest.
"Are you ok?" he wondered.
"Yeah... I think so," I responded in confusion, as I searched around for the beat. Boom..., boom..., it came again. My eyes grew wider, as I wrapped my arm back around him and continued to sway. My heart was beating... how is it beating when it's been dead for so long? I thought to myself.
"Emery..." he said tenderly, looking down to me.
"Yes..." I sighed as I looked up at him, coming out of deep thought.
"Do you want to get out of here?" he asked, with a smile.
"And go where...?" I wondered.
He smirked as he grabbed my hand and responded, "come on."
As we broke through the crowd and headed for the door, I saw Jess still over at the bar. "See yah..." I said to her motioning with my mouth and waving my hand bye.
