It was about 8:00 p.m. when I arrived at the house. I didn't want to stay out too late because I didn't want to worry Jess and Adam again. As I stepped out of the car the front door swung open, Jess was escorting Aiden out.

"Hey, what's up Emery," Aiden said.

"Hi Aiden...," I mumbled.

Aiden was Jessica's boyfriend, and they had been dating for quite some time now. He was really tall and slender and had a low cut with wavy hair. He always dressed nicely, and that was one thing they had in common, fashion. Aiden always seemed to make Jess happy, and to me, that was a good thing. "So, how's everything going with you?" he asked.

"Ok I guess," I answered back, as I stood at the bottom of the steps looking up at him and Jess.

"Cool," he replied, as he kissed Jess goodbye, "I'll see you later..." he whispered to her. "You sure will..." she responded back, with a smile.

"Nice seeing you Emery," he said, as he walked past me heading to his car. "Same here," I responded.

As we watched Aiden walk to his car and take off, Jess asked curiously, "so, how was your day? did Adam go off on you?"

"What do you think?" I replied, as I sat down on the step gazing up at her. She shook her head, as she sat down beside me and took a deep breath, "I told you..." she mumbled.

"Yeah..." I sighed, in a soft voice.

"Well, I know something that may cheer you up," she smiled.

"What's that?" I wondered.

"The bar is having a cover band play Saturday night, and I know how much you enjoy hearing them, so you should come," she suggested.

"Yeah...? ok, well I'll think about it,"

"Great!" she replied.

"Oh, and I bet you'll never guess who came in to get coffee today," I said, as I stared at her waiting for her to guess.

"Who?" she asked.

"Carter..." I replied.

"No way!" she said as she became excited, "so what happened?! details please... and don't leave anything out," she demanded.

My eyes widened, as I shook my head. "Ok..." I responded; she was definitely way too excited. "So, after Adam cursed me out in the break room, I walked out to the front, and he was standing over by the coffee station with a friend. At first, I didn't know who he was because his back was facing toward me, but as I walked over to help, I realized then that it was him," I explained.

"So then what happened?" she asked with a cheesy grin.

"I mean... honestly, I was shocked, like a deer in headlights..."

"I bet!" she responded, as she burst out laughing.

"Funny huh...?" I asked, as I began to chuckle myself.

"Yeah it's funny," she replied, continuing to laugh, "ok, then what happened?" she said.

Shrugging my shoulders, I responded, "nothing much really, just a lot of small talk, and he did ask me for my number."

"Really? did you give it to him?"

"I did..." I sighed.

"Ok, well why so sad about it?"

I looked away.

"What?'" she asked, as she started to become concerned.

"He's a paramedic..." I answered back, in a low spoken voice. We both became silent, as we thought for a few seconds.

"You don't think he was there do you?" she asked. I dazed out into the dark sky and replied, "I don't know..."

"Well just don't jump to conclusions."

"So Adam said," I replied sarcastically, as my voice trembled.

"Don't worry Em, ok," she responded, "did he say when he would call?"

"No... he didn't."

"He will..." she assumed.

"Yeah... we'll see," I groaned, as I stood up ready to end the conversation.

"I'm going inside now, I'm getting tired," I muttered.

"You're ok though right?" she worried.

"Yeah... I'm good, I just had a long day today that's all."

"Ok, well goodnight then," she said, as she still sat there on the step.

"Goodnight Jess," I responded.
