Chapter 13 You don't know

"I see you found yourself a friend kid..." Adam said, as he walked over to me.

"I wouldn't say that, I mean... I barely know him," I responded, as I grabbed the towel and began to wipe down the counter.

"Hmm... it didn't look like you barely knew him, what's his name and where did you meet him?" he asked. As I looked up at him, for a minute I wondered if I should tell him, especially after he jumped on my case a while ago about me going out to the lake.

"What's up kid? ... it's ok, you can tell me."

I was nervous and he knew it, he was always good at reading me. Here we go again, I thought to myself, as I sighed and began to explain.

"Well, remember the whole not coming home convo we just had?"

"Yeah..." he replied.

"Well... the reason why I didn't come home was because I got a flat tire, and it was pouring down raining. So I just climbed into the front seat and went to sleep until daylight came, when I could figure out something."

"Figure out something?!" he asked, in a frustrating way, "what do you mean?! You could have called me, you know that."

"I know... I just got so overwhelmed and frustrated I couldn't think, I'm sorry." I apologized.

As he stood there staring at me and trying to remain calm, he responded. "So where does he come in?"

"I heard a tap on the window, I woke up and he was standing there. He was concerned about me having a flat tire and sleeping in the car, so he offered to help, and the rest is history," I explained.

"The rest is history huh..." he repeated.

"Yeah..." I replied in a soft voice, as I began to stock up the coffee cups.

"Well it didn't look like that to me, it looked like it was just starting to begin," he assured me.

I paused, as I looked up at him, "Adam I think he was there," my voice trembled.

"What do you mean he was there, he was where?" he asked, as he leaned in for an answer.

"You know... last year," I sighed.

"Are you sure? What makes you think that?" he asked, in heavy concern.

"I don't know, maybe because he is a paramedic, he said he has been for two years now..." and as I continued on blabbing, Adam stopped me.

"DONT! you don't know if he was there."

"I know but I..."

"STOP!" he warned, cutting me off once more. "You don't know, and maybe it's best that way," he suggested, and as I sighed, I responded, "okay, maybe you're right."
