Chapter 12 The Exchange

I couldn't help but to stare at him as he stood there in his work gear, which caused a quick flashback of last year. "So, you're a paramedic?" I asked, curiously.

"I am..." he replied.

"Wow, for how long?" I asked in confusion, as I began to make his coffee.

"About two years now, I would say," he guessed. "Oh, and this is my friend and work partner Rick."

"Nice to meet you Rick," I said, generously.

"Nice to meet you Emery," he replied, with a heavy grin.

"So, this is who you were talking about?" he asked Carter, trying to whisper.

"Man shhh...." Carter scowled, looking back at him. I chuckled under my breath as I shook my head and butted in, "It's cool..." For a minute it got silent as the moment became awkward, "okay... so I think I'll go wait in the van now," Rick said to Carter, as he started to head for the door.

"I'll be right out" Carter replied, as he looked at him sideways.

"Again, it was nice meeting you Emery..." Rick announced, as he looked back at Carter with a smirk on his face.

"Sorry about that," Carter mumbled, as he reached into his pocket to pull out his wallet.

"It's ok, really," I insisted, "would you like anything else?" I asked, as he handed me his money to pay for the coffee.

"Actually yeah, there is one more thing," he replied, with a smile.

"Of course, maybe a muffin or a danish to go with your coffee," I suggested, as I turned toward the shelf to grab for one.

"Oh no, no thank you," he replied, "but I would like to call you some time," he said smoothly.

"Oh, you want my number..." I said, shockingly.

"Is that so hard to believe?" he asked, squinting at the eyes.

"I mean, kind of... I did come off a little harsh the other day when you were helping me."

"Well we all have our days sometimes, right?" he assured me, as his gorgeous eyes concentrated on me. Suddenly this warm feeling rushed right through me that I haven't felt in a long time. "So..." he said softly, waiting on a response.

I wanted to say no, but after gazing back into

his eyes I couldn't.

"Sure, we can exchange numbers," I replied.

After agreeing, I started to have a guilty conscience. He didn't know the type of life I was living or what it has become anyways, but then there was something about him that I liked, and because of that, a part of me wanted to take a chance to pursue him. After taking each other's numbers, he promised that he would call later. Grabbing his coffee and giving me a wink, he gave me one last smile as he headed out.
