CHAPTER THREE

The picture is of Sara Sampaio. She has an adorable face and is just perfect for playing Phoebe. Enjoy! PLS if you have someone better in mind, let me know after the first part of Chapter four when I'll describe Phoebe.
I couldn't believe my eyes at the moment. I knew this girl, I was sure of it. The slender tanned golden-eyed brunette smiled despite our stunned expressions.
"Hi. Am Elaine Ellicott. Are you Phoebe?" She asked
I nodded. But muttered, "Ellicott?" as though unsure of what I heard
"Yes, Ellicott." she responded quite calmly as though understanding my disbelief. "I'll be your class partner from henceforth. Been looking forward to meeting you. It's a pleasure." a warm smile spread across her lips and I instantly felt alright with her, she stretched out an arm for a handshake and I took it. I noticed Sam was quiet and it did feel unusual considering I've marked her as the bubbly yet sensitive type in the short while that I've known her.
"Lunch time is almost up. We have defense class together after Lunch. See you there." Elaine said and sauntered away.
"What in the world just happened?" I asked no one in particular. "she is... adorable"
"I agree"Sam finally spoke up. I cast Sam a sideways glance and shook my head. "Just to give you a heads up, that Princess won't go easy on you so whatever your game is, you have to up it." her tone was surprisingly concerning despite the words she had just thrown out.
For defense class, Pris tine had this very fascinating hall-like room availed. It was painted white and I could see weapons, actual weapons arranged to the sides. There were different kinds of them and in quantities to go round an entire class, but then again my class had just twenty-four students. I was really nervous for this class. I've never had self-defense classes before and so it was a first for just me noting how every other student waltzed in comfortably into the hall. We had earlier changed into our defense uniform for this class. They were actually pretty good-looking just like every other thing I've come across here so far. For girls, it was a pair of three-quarter tights, a tank top with the school's logo on it and sleek black training shoes. The boys wore a pair of three-quarter sweats, a vest similar to the design of the girls' tank tops as well as the school's logo on it and similar training shoes.
I noted Elaine was present as well as Michaela. Elaine met my gaze and smiled, my heart pounded, but I managed to return the smile. Our teacher for the class soon called for order and in neat rows I hadn't noticed when we formed, we stood as though on attention.
With his hands behind his back as he faced us, he started, "Today, we will be practicing our sword skills." I noticed our teacher was young, very fit judging by his firm physique and he was definitely attractive. He had that kind of grace and charisma required to take on a class as such. Out of nervousness, I pinched the bridge of my nose and pushed back my glasses.
" In today's class, we will not be using the real thing."he announced and the students groaned. Seriously? They even use the real thing for training class? Now am super nervous. Am thankful that we will not be using the 'real' thing, God knows I wouldn't be able to handle it.
"What we'll be using will be wooden swords" he said holding up what looked like an actual two-edged sword except it lacked the shiny luster on actual swords. "We should all remember that situational awareness is the key in sword fighting. Your mind need not only be aware that you need to fight, but you must also take in your environment and use it to your advantage. Everyone should grab a weapon at this point."he ordered.
In the order that still amazed me, the students strode to the weapons' vault and each took up a wooden sword including myself before returning to their original positions but this time, standing at ease.
"Everyone here have their class partners, go over to them and lets get started." Our teacher ordered again and all complied. Elaine came to me and my stomach flip-flopped. Sam's words ringed in my ears again. How could I tell Elaine that I've never done this before? I gulped.
"What is the matter? You seem nervous. Loosen up, I won't bite" she said, her expression neutral.
I nodded and faced her. I swung my sword at her but she skillfully dodged, used the hilt of her sword to hit my stomach landing me on my back. Before I could react, her sword was at my throat. I gulped. I expected her to be furious but she looked amused. She eventually helped me up.
"You've never done this before, have you?" she asked. I shook my head. "Why didn't you say so?" Now, I was genuinely surprised. "Here, you have to be at a proper stance." she instructed, spreading out her legs not too far apart. I imitated her.
"Do you have any abilities?"she asked and I shook my head again. "That's not a bad thing. Defense class is for all. Keep your posture straight, and your chest and torso forward to keep you from loosing your balance during your swings and this position allows you to avoid with a simple twist, any blows with ease
"Now, you must have a strong defense. Maintain your sword in a position that runs from the bottom of your torso to the top of your head. This position also enables you to attack with reasonable speed and gives you many angles for your own strikes. Got it?" she asked, staring at me hopefully. I nodded
"Ah good" she said with relief. "This is actually my first time instructing" she sighed. That surprised me. She had instructed me with ease and practical examples, I could not see how anyone wouldn't follow. "Now, lets test spar. Shall we?" she inquired hopefully. I nodded, I mean what could I say? I was totally nervous but I had to try.
We stand in position, she swings at me and I side slide to the other side avoiding the hit. She comes at me again and I do the same thing. She finally lunges directly at me, I do the first thing that comes to my mind, block. And it worked. We parried for a while until I tried to spin a circle, creating an opening for her. She took advantage and in a fraction of a second, her wooden sword was merely inches away from right eye. I was breathing hard and surprisingly, she wasn't. In fact, she looked as fresh as ever.
She put down the blade. I stepped back trying to catch my breath "Impressive for a first time but you need practice. And... don't spin ever, leave the dramatics to the movies." she said.
"Thank you." I finally said.
"You are welcome and it was a pleasure." she replied casting me a warm smile. I had a feeling we'd work together just fine.
Our defense teacher who I found out from Elaine is Mr. Hendricks soon called the class to order."I watched all of you spar and it was definitely an improved version of what I saw from our fist class but we are not done yet. Right this moment, I'll call up two students who will spar and the rest of you will watch. So far, these two are among the top five in this class. As you watch, I want you to note their movements, swings, defense and attack tactics because after they are done, I'll randomly call up anyone to tell me their strengths and weaknesses." he paused as I held my breath
"Michaela Snedaker and Elaine Ellicott, come up." he commanded and the two girls came out.
They set in position and the spar took off. I was shocked at Elaine's speed. She moved like a real swordsman. Michaela wasn't bad at all. She somehow managed to keep up with Elaine though she wasn't as fast. They parried, attacked and at rare intervals, flipped! My jaw dropped. They eventually paused and panted but the side of Elaine's mouth went up in a crooked grin. I saw sth flash in Michaela's features; intimidation, fear, am not sure but one thing is certain. Elaine had the upper hold.
They got back to it soon enough until Elaine started what I thought were dancing motions. Michaela tightened her hold on the sword's hilt but she was certainly distracted by Elaine's motions. In a blink of an eye, Elaine got to Michaela and using the hilt of her sword pushed Michaela at the torso before flipping her over. Michaela did not have time to react, Elaine held the sword to her throat and a victorious grin spread across her mouth. She helped Michaela up as Mr. Hendricks congratulated her.
"But you did cheat, you used your teleportation ability in that last move."Mr. Hendricks said to Elaine. So, its teleportation, I thought. Impressive,
"Nobody said they couldn't be used" Elaine shrugged. She did have a point. I mouthed 'congratulations' at Elaine and she mouthed 'thank you' back to me
After a few students voiced out the strengths and weaknesses of the spar as Mr. Hendricks had earlier said, the class was dismissed. I walked with Elaine to the locker room to change back into our regular uniform and then, we went on to the next class; Music, also my last class for the day.
I sat next to Elaine at Music class at her request. Our Music teacher seemed very amiable. She briefly introduced the topic for the day and after a few test runs, called up a student, Michaela Snedaker. Elaine smiled at her as she took a seat behind the grand piano, Michaela returned the smile. I wasn't exactly expecting them to be antagonistic towards each other but they seemed rather too close.
"Are you very close to Michaela" I tentatively asked Elaine.
"Yes. We grew up together and we we've always gotten along just fine. Why do you ask?"
"Its... just after defense class..."
Elaine laughed cutting me off. "No, sth like that could never get in-between Michaela and I. We've always been like that. We compete like all the time but am better at fighting while she is better at entertaining, like music." she explained and I nodded in realization.
The sound of the soft music playing snapped our attention back to the class. Michaela was working her magic already. The song started with a slow, calm tone which made me feel like simply falling into a deep peaceful slumber, hearing more of the class yawn made me realize that I wasn't the only one it was affecting. Michaela wasn't even singing and she already had this strong influence over us. Soon, the tempo increased. The keynotes got more intense and upbeat making us sit upright in our seats as though on alert for an intruder. This continued until Michaela slowed down again, she eventually rounded off on a very calming note. She was dead quiet for a moment and so was everyone until she sighed and everyone seemed to wake up from a deep slumber and applauded. She blushed slightly. I stared at her in disbelief, how could she have so much control over what we could feel?
I ran across Sam after school. She was chatting amiably with a cute brown-haired guy. I approached them as Sam's dark warm eyes rested on me. She introduced her friend to me as Rex Sanders. Rex was very polite and very whimsical as well.
"I just wanted to thank you for today." I told Sam. "I couldn't have settled in today without you. Am truly grateful"
Sam shrugged it off. "I didn't do anything really."
"You bought me lunch." I recalled
"That's all. You went through today because you were determined to. Its not easy fitting into Pris Tine but you did just fine. You didn't mind no one bothered and you definitely did not draw attention to yourself despite 'attention' did find you." I knew she was referring to Elaine. "Anyways, keep your eyes open, its only the first day of the week." she winked and strode towards the other direction with Rex, Rex waved me and I waved back. I sighed. Now, time to find the school bus.
I pulled up my backpack and with the aid of my student 'notebook' started to find my way as I turned towards the other side of the hallway. I thought I heard giggles and swoons and lifting my head from the notebook, found the object of attraction.
He was definitely tall, about 6'2, his sun-kissed brown hair was brushed up, his facial features were very sharp and chiselled and his eyes were a brilliant combination of blue and gold giving him this mysterious yet confident air; those eyes were also too familiar. His strides exuded confidence and yet much natural grace, he was lean in a very attractive way and yet so fit. His uniform clung to him in a way that I thought only him could pull off and yet there was nothing that seemed arrogant about him. His expression was neutral despite the girls were obviously ogling him and there was this sort of authority that swayed those around making them clear a pathway to let him walk through.
I hadn't realized that I was still staring until he towered over me. I was suddenly speechless. I scratched my hair for words to say but nothing came forth. I noticed all eyes on me, us. I groaned inwardly, so much for not drawing attention. My expression at that moment must have been funny because he chuckled. Yes, the 'He' chuckled quietly.
"Am sorry I was in your way, forgive me. I didn't mean to, am just going to go now." I blurted and tried to leave but he caught me by the wrist. I looked down at my wrist and back to him. If I thought that what I felt for Xavier were butterflies, then this was much worse, a tornado. I pulled my hand away from his grasp in an effort to collect my senses. Breathe, breathe Phoebe, I chanted inwardly.
"Phoebe," he said. I thought I heard wrong. He knew my name?
"You. know... my name?" I stuttered
He shook his head slowly. "Am a good guesser" he replied before he smiled. And I felt myself melt. Boy, am I in big trouble or what?
"See you around." he said and sauntered away while I watched him. What is happening? How could I feel so much attraction to a person in an instant?
*******
I crashed onto my bed in exhaustion. Despite how my first day had gone, I felt really happy. Pris Tine was just wonderful. I had more adventure in one day than I've had in over four years. I took in a deep breath and exhaled. I closed my eyes and saw those mysterious eyes, I opened my eyes and rolled over to my side as my stomach did a flip-flop. I was definitely sure I've encountered those eyes but from where simply eluded me. I heard a tap on my door causing me to sit upright and soon later, Lexi walked in. I sighed in relief and laid back down.
"Were you thinking I was mom?" Lexi asked in quite an amused tone and I rolled my eyes. She smiled and sat on the bed beside me. "So, how was your first day in school?" she inquired. I rolled onto my back and stared at her before propping my elbow on the bed and rested my head on it.
"It was incredible"I whispered wistfully. "Like magic. I met two of the Royals and they were so nice and the way I feel about Pris Tine is good. And you cannot imagine just who happens to be my new partner," Lexi's eyes lightened up in curiosity. She had the same light green eyes as mom. "Elaine Ellicott in. flesh." I said and Lexi's eyes widened
"That is incredible. I can imagine Cara's expression when she hears this one, it definitely beats her fake story by a long shot!" Lexi exclaimed.
I grinned. "What about you?" I asked sitting up to a cross-legged position
"What about me?"Lexi asked confused
"How is college?" I inquired in a duh-tone
"Oh! College. Its wonderful so far. The usual."
"And Scott?"
"He is good. Annoying but good." Lexi said in her most neutral tone and I burst into laughter. "Why are you laughing?"
"you.. you should have seen yourself, trying to play cool. It was hilarious" I said amidst fits of giggles. Lexi rolled her eyes. "Both of you are so hilarious. Like a rom-com, I just can't see enough of you."
"Oh shut up" Lexi said punching me playfully but she smiled. "I do like that kid a lot I guess. He is kinda adorable" Lexi said smiling smugly to herself.
"I know. You two should never break up." I said
"And you? Anything you want to share with your big sis?" she asked and I shook my head "Oh come on, don't be such a bore" she cajoled. I sighed.
"Okay, I guess I might have crushes on two different guys?"
"Two?" she asked disbelievingly "You've never had on one before except fleeting infatuations but two, I mean who are you and what have you done with my baby sister?" Lexi's eyes narrowed on me
"Whoah, easy there. Am still me, okay?" I paused for a moment "I don't understand myself either. It all just sorta happened. But I'll fight it. I won't let myself be some pathetic person who falls heads over heels for someone she barely knows and won't probably be anything to her, ever."
"Hey! you are a teenager, its okay to feel, don't just let it drive you" Lexi soothed. I smiled at her, she's the best. Another tap came on the door and in came Dylan.
"Hey ladies," he greeted in his characteristic jovial tone.
"Hey Dylan" we greeted back.
"So, Phoebe, how was your school like? Did they have robotic beings, were there per-programmed classes, did they have flying cameras?..." and a few of other things I thought were outrageous. When he eventually stopped. I shook my head.
"No. They had none of those and stop with your wild imaginations." I said
"you can't tell me to stop, I never ask you to quit yours" he retorted. I sighed.
"You have a point, I won't ask you to stop but then, why are you here again?"
"I almost forgot. Mom and dad are waiting at the dining table" he announced
"But isn't it too early for dinner?" Lexi asked
"Yeah it is. Am guessing they both want to hear about Pris Tine Academy, so Phoebe, be ready. They won't hesitate to fire away." Dylan said
I groaned but Lexi pulled me up by the arm, "Come on. Lets just get it over with."
I sulkily got off the bed, slipped on a pair of my pajamas footwear and traipsed out of the room. I could hear Dylan and Lexi chuckle behind me.
"Not funny guys" I yelled loud enough for them to hear me but it made me to start laughing instead.
