Nine
The group of nine made their way from the room of requirement towards the top part of the castle. Many of the group already knew where they were upon entrance and most of the way they were heading considering they had all once been students within the school. However, due to the busy atmosphere of the surrounding area, considering the time of day there were still many students around it meant that Naomi and Draco had to guide the adults. For Naomi would not allow a single student to come to harm tonight. The Death Eaters were here for Albus Dumbledore and that was the only person she would allow them access to. She didn't want to but, it was him or the student population. She knew at some point she would come to regret even more actually completing the cabinet.
But for now she had to remain focused. Stay on the predetermined route her and Draco had meticulously planned over the last couple of weeks. It was a route which nearly completely avoided all other students and faculty members. Though it would appear their route wasn't as unpredictable as they first thought. For as they reached the wooden beamed roof of the top floor they met with another group of adults. Naomi was quick to easily determine this group as being members of the The Order. The group of light wizards who were responsible for winning the first war and were more than likely going to win the one they were currently engaging in. She didn't recognise many of the adults who were waiting there for them, other than one. Naomi's eyes widened as she locked eyes with the Gare of her ex- teacher. For at the very front of the group was the Remus Lupin, the only Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher Naomi had actually liked and appreciated. Naomi could not help but to look down avoiding the eyes of her teacher and the other members of the Order. Ashamed of her actions which had brought her here, her right hand going automatically to the mark on her left arm. She rubbed harshly at the magical tattoo causing it to ache in a way she felt as though she deserved.
Though she did not have much time to ponder in her own self pity, for she was suddenly moving out of the way of the spells being thrown between the groups. Naomi rushed over to the corner of the room, close to one of the large wooden pillars which was enough to hide her from the sight of the others around her. It was enough to cover her as the fighting moved from the current area they were in to somewhere else as the group spanned out separating into smaller duelling pairs. Naomi thought perhaps now they were occupied that this would be her opportunity to escape. But it would appear her crafty little hiding spot wasn't that crafty in the end.
"Miss Nott." The disappointed tone of the voice she had only heard a couple of years ago snapped her out of the thought that she was hidden. If she was honest, she was even surprised the professor had remembered her, or even knew her name in that time.
"Professor." Naomi looked up to see the look of pure shame and disappointment from her professor. She had nothing to say, how could she. Naomi knew that this look would be one forever sketched into her memory, this look would be the first of many she would receive. But it was the way he looked at her specifically that she just knew would make him the face she saw whenever she got ready to do anything related to the Death Eaters in the future.
He continued to study her for a second and Naomi wasn't sure what was going to come next. Would he hex her so she faced the consequences of her actions? She wasn't sure but she knew at some point in time she would have to come to terms and face the music.
"They got you too huh?" Lupin's words seemed to take on a slightly softer tone as he continued to stare at her. Naomi took to looking at him with a face of shock, she knew that he was not an ex-death eater. He had never been mentioned as one. But the way he spoke was as if he either knew someone who had been or someone who had made a very narrow escape from the clutches of the Dark Lord.
Naomi found herself unable to speak any words. She didn't know whether to confide in him or to run. It wasn't like she could defend her actions anyways. There wasn't something she could use, after all saying she was scared she was going to be killed wasn't really on scale to endangering the whole Hogwarts population.
"I just hope that in the end, when it truly matters that you realise where you are and where you're supposed to be." His words were final drawing a close to the conversation no matter how one sided it was as he walked away from the teenager. Naomi turned to bolt away from where she was hidden, away from the tower of the castle they had walked to and to somewhere else she felt safe. To a certain ginger in particular.
However, on her way out she caught the ever familiar blur of black scruffy hair and Gryffindor uniform. There was only one student in the school who looked like that and was stupid enough to run in the direction of Death Eaters. Naomi wanted to curse loudly because she knew that had she got enough of a glimpse to see him that he had enough of a glimpse to see her. He might not have been 100 percent sure as to who she was but he had seen her and she had been caught. Caught by Harry Freakin' Potter of all people. Just her luck. It meant that if he was able to connect the dots to who she was, not that she was even sure that he knew her name the rather conceited boy didn't seem to know many of the names of students outside of his house, that her secret was out. And if her secret was out the many other students in her house who had also been drafted young were at risk of being discovered. Her many mistakes of this evening were heavily amounting and she was going to seriously suffer in the future for it.
But Naomi couldn't remain here any longer. The longer she stayed the more likely that Harry was to come after her. She needed to get out of there before the boy wonder found her or worse the Death Eaters did and she faced the consequences of not getting involved in the fighting. The best place she could think in that exact moment was to be somewhere outside. Somewhere, that was a decent distance to the tower and away from the gathering student body she could see in the courtyard. Despite wanting to be away from the courtyard she was acting on autopilot mode and was heading to one of the corridors surrounding it.
Standing in the corridor surrounding the courtyard was not Naomi's best decision considering the ever growing number of students gathering. Everyone's eyes were on the tower Naomi had just fled from as the sign of spells being cast back and forth continued. And she continued to watch on as she caught sight of the body of Albus Dumbledore falling from the window of the top of the tower. Her mission was finally complete. But she wondered, just why as her cause now had a much stronger chance of winning that she felt so bad. She felt so out of place within her own side and within the student body.
Naomi was more than aware that this was what the plan entailed. That this was the goal overall. She had worked that out a long, long time ago. Yet seeing it in person really kicked her in the teeth. Actually seeing the death and destruction caused by her own actions was nothing she ever imagined could happen. Naomi knew, had known for a long time that her ideals and the ideals of the Death Eaters didn't quite match up. Yet seeing this only confirmed to her that as she had first thought that she was on the wrong side. She didn't want to continue to see things like this occurring. Not because of her actions. Naomi had to get out of the Death Eaters, she just wasn't sure how. It wasn't easy to defect there weren't many who had and lived to tell the tale.
Naomi wished for more than anything, as she continued to look on at the student and staff body that had accumulated, that the shadows would just swallow her up. That she would drift away into the dark abyss she felt harbouring down upon her. That she could remain hidden away from the world forever. But she should have known, considering she always lost a game of hide and seek, that she could never stay hidden for long. For the second time that day she was found by someone else and dragged away from her hiding spot.
All Naomi got was a glimpse of something ginger and a calloused hand gripping onto her left bicep pulling her in the direction of the green and far away from the courtyard. She didn't protest against this action knowing the only ginger in the school who would actively search her out would be. Naomi took a second to relish in the sudden comfort she felt as a waft of familiar perfume made it's way over. She allowed the ginger to drag her down the cobbled path and towards the very edge of the Quidditch playing field, which felt eerily quiet.
Ginny turned to face Naomi when they had finally reached the direction the slightly shorter girl had decided upon. The ginger's eyebrows were pulled close to one another as she stood there staring at Naomi. A silent invitation for Naomi to speak, to explain what on earth had just happened. But most importantly, Ginny waited to hear Naomi explain to her just what part she had in all of this. To what extent the Nott Heiress was involved. But this wasn't Naomi's plan, the silent invitation hadn't made its way to the recipient. She just wanted a moment to Basque in the atmosphere which was her relationship considering it was highly likely going to crumble.
"Naomi what in Merlin's Beard just happened?" Ginny started staring the Slytherin down. Ginny had waited long enough for a response to her silent invitation.
"My task." Were the only words Naomi felt as though she could say, she didn't know how to explain what she had done, she wasn't sure she ever would. How to really tell someone just how woven she was in the intricate workings of the Death Eaters.
"Naomi, your task isn't a good enough explanation at the moment. I need to know, did you do it?" Naomi tilted her head in confusion she had just told Ginny she had done her task, wasn't that what she wanted to know.
"Do what?" Naomi decided to ask for clarification but all she could do was watch on as the Weasley girl began to slowly get frustrated with her.
"Dumbledore! Naomi did you kill Dumbledore?" Ginny's words were a mixture of frustration and worry as if she was suddenly facing the reality that she could be standing face to face with a murderer.
"Oh goodness no. I didn't. I would never. I could never." Naomi rushed out her words as she moved to take Ginny's hands in her own. The urgency behind her words and the sudden intensity of her hold upon Ginny's hand she hoped were enough to prove to the other girl that she wasn't the one who killed their headmaster. But she was suddenly very nervous, this was the highest chance that their relationship would actually come to an end. It was the one thing she didn't want to happen but she could feel it becoming more of a reality as she listened to the devil on her shoulder which shouted out the end of her relationship.
"You didn't?" Ginny wanted a reaffirmation of the answer. She didn't seem as agitated any more and Naomi hoped that the little devil wasn't going to win.
"Of course not. I don't want my side to win."
