Emerald Joy Voight grew up spending time in and out of hospital, ever since she was a baby she had a heart condition, a hole in her heart which she has undergone many surgeries as she grew up, she would get an infection which would then make her really poorly and she'd have to spend more time in hospital... Being poorly was nothing new for Emerald but she had her older sister, brother as well as her mother and father. Emerald hated being in hospital but she knew she had no other choice, as a child she had to grow up faster than most children...

At the age of 10 she had to have yet another surgery to repair her heart, the child was as frightened, scared that she was going to die but by the age of 15 she realised that their was a strong chance that she could die, that her heart could give out and she would be no more... she had came to terms with the fact that she could die, at one point she wished she would die, she wished her body would give up and she would be free from the pain, from the nightmares which was her life...

Emerald adored her father and her siblings but she was tired of fighting, tired of her heart not working like it should, she missed her mom and wasn't sure how much more she could fight... turning 16 was a turning point in for Emerald, she had another surgery, passed her exams and went straight into college and training to become a paramedic. This time the surgery put her into recovery, she was strong enough to do things she wasn't able to before, one of them things being able to go to parties, she missed loafs of her friends party's growing up and she hated that, she hates not being like the other children but knows it's better for her in the long term...

Emerald's POV
Aged 9

Another day in hospital, I was used to it, the hospital was practically my second home.. let me introduce myself to you. I'm Emerald Joy Voight and I'm the youngest daughter of Hank Voight and Camille Voight... I'm also the youngest sister of Justin and Elle Voight and foster sister of Erin Lindsey. I am 9 years old and I have a poorly heart. Since I was a baby my heart has been poorly I have to have another operation to fix it. My mom has just gone to heaven before I turned 9 and I miss her lots, she used to hug me until I fell asleep in hospital and yes I do love my dada but it's not the same.

"Daddy, I can't sleep" I coughed feeling breathless as dad was half asleep in the chair beside me.

"Do you want cuddles Emmy?" Dad asked as he took my hand gently in his

"Cuddles please Daddy" I asked while I coughed some more. Dad sat on the bed beside me and wrapped his arms around me and I snuggled into his side.

"I've got you Emmy. I've got you" dad said softly as I coughed. Dad rubbed my back gently and held me close to him like mom used to do and soon I was asleep.

Hank's POV
Emerald aged 9

As I rubbed Emeralds back gently to get her to sleep I let out a small sigh, it was the first time since Camille passed that Emerald has been in hospital, it'll be her first surgery too, Camille was always better at comforting Emerald when she was scared, what if I wasn't enough, what if in the process of looking after Emerald I let Justin and Elle down, they need me too. Alvin is watching them for the night since we weren't sure if Emerald was going to be discharged, we hadn't gotten a diagnosis at 2pm when we brought Emerald into the emergency room.

"I've got you Emmy' I've got you" I said softly to my youngest daughter she coughed as I rubbed her back gently like Camille used to do. Emerald snuggled into my side as she fell asleep.

"You will get through this again Emmy! Your brother, sister and I are all here for you... always baby girl. Always" I said softly as I gently kissed her forehead as she slept, it was going to be a long night but it always is on her first night in hospital.
