Emerald Eyes

"All I wanted was you!"

Chance roared in laughter as he watches the girl beside him tried to bang her head on the air while singing along with their favorite band on the radio. "Yeah!"

Maddison fixed her hair while laughing. "Naalala mo pa 'yung concert nila? That was so cool!"

He shook his head and grinned - looking in front and clutched the vehicle shift. "Paano ko makakalimutan 'yon? You sell out your grand piano and the chandelier at your lounge just to buy a VIP ticket."

"Excuse me! A shining and shimmering VIP ticket! That was a once-in-a-life-time experience!"

Chance chuckled once again and continued to drive. She can be reckless when it comes to something that she loves.

She clutched her hair and looked around as they drove through a greenery field. "So, are we there yet?"

He stepped on the engine to quicken the pace to their destination and smiled. "What do you think?"

Maddison once again looked around excitedly and when she saw the familiar set of trees from afar, she squealed happily. "We're here!"

Chance cannot stop himself from smiling. They spent the whole day wandering throughout the town, shopping, playing the arcades, killing time at the amusement park, buying sweets like a craving kid, and fooled around the horror house.

He can feel her genuine excitement and the nostalgia immediately hits him.

It had been years since they've been here.

Chance stepped on the brakes and carefully parked the car. She widely opened the old and creaking door beside her and threw herself outside.

The wind blew around and her dark hair dance - making her laugh. She waved her hand, beckoning him to go out.

His gaze softened and stepped out of the truck. Maddison giggled at him and spread her arms wide. "Goodness gracious, can you see this?"

The flowerless field a few years ago was now bursting with yellow rapeseed flowers. The grass still looked clean, just the same when they left it but everything looked more magical now.

Maddison dreamily wander her eyes at the scenery and Chance watched her emerald eyes sparkled when she looked up.

Her jaws almost dropped and were left speechless. She tried to say something to him but she's too mesmerized and amazed to what she saw. She looked at him and chuckled in pure glee and excitement.

It made his heart tremble for many different reasons.

"See that? 'Di ba ginawa natin 'yon?" She jogged towards the tree and saw two tires and along rope. "Everything is just the same where we left them!"

Chance sighed and smiled. "Talaga? You have a very long term memory." That was a very long time ago - barely starting elementary school. Everything looked so different but also looked the same. He can't explain it properly.

"Of course! Those moments are the most precious moments I've ever had. Sobrang saya ko noon, whenever we're here!"

He sighed and swallowed to calm his sudden raging heartbeat.

She clapped her hands once and took the scenery with her eyes again. "Tara doon!"

She pointed out the field and before he could even answer, she tugged his arms forcefully making him almost tripped. Maddison happily giggled. Chance cringed jokingly. "Para kang bata!"

"Let's pretend to be kids just for tonight!" They ran against the golden rapeseeds and when they reached the middle, the wind blew hard, making a few petals flew in the air.

She looked at him. "Aren't you tired of being an adult? Working a tiring job every single day to be a worthy and functioning member of society." Humikab ito. "The whole ordeal is boring."

He shrugged. "Can't argue with that, though."

Maddison suddenly picked a few flowers. "Gumawa tayo ng flower crown."

He watched as she gracefully moved against the flowers. They flew aimlessly, floating in the air while the others are resting from the flower's petals.

Ibinalik nito ang lumang alaala noong bata pa sila. Maddison would chase the fireflies away - won't stop until she fell on her knees and got wounded. He was always there to scold her about her recklessness but he also made sure that he would be beside her to patch those wounds.

"Who gave you a permission to picked flowers?"

She shot a brow. "Bakit naman? This field is ours, remember?"

His heart throbbed again.

"This is where we build our dream, the place where we hide, the place we can run to when we're sad, our meeting place, our safe haven," Maddison smiled, too dangerous for his heart.

He mentally cursed how beautiful she looked. Her eyes sparkled as the fireflies danced between them. One flew past her eyes and God knows how gorgeous they looked. Deep emerald eyes that seemed to stare right into his soul.

He stared as if being hypnotized.

Maddison smiled and picked one flower. Reaching up, she placed it behind his ears and grinned like a child. Meanwhile, Chance's hands unconsciously worked on the flower crown and carefully placed it above her head.

A princess. Despite wearing faded jeans, a black sweat shirt, and a pair of converse shoes, she twirled her body as if wearing a dress. To his eyes, she'd always been a princess wearing glass shoes and a shimmering long gown.

Suddenly, a firefly alighted above his hand. He drew the hand closer to his face.

"Smile!"

As much as he hated to admit it, he flushed in embarrassment, remembering how he looked pathetic having a flower behind his ears. "No!"

Maddison laughed and pressed the shutter. "Damn, Cha. You looked like a princess!"

Still flushing, he reached out- trying to steal the photo. "You're not going to keep that!"

Maddison stepped back - clutching the photo against her chest. "Oh, yeah?"

"Hey!"

She sprinted away from him with her tongue out. He cursed and chase her, still trying to steal the photo but she's too fast compared to him who always slow - suffering from leg and backpain like an old man spending overtime at work.

"Another rare occurrence!"

"Maddy!"

She laughed out loud. "Gonna add this to my collection!"

Chance gritted his teeth in embarrassment and reached up to her fast. He grabbed her waist as they both fell - landing on the grassy ground. She's still laughing her heart out while he moved his arms and legs to hold her in place. He clicked his tongue and snatch the photo away from her hand.

Still lying on the ground with her best friend above her, she chuckled and wiped the tears forming from her eyes because of laughing too much. Calming down, she opened her eyes.

He wanted them to stay like that but who was he kidding?

He pushes himself up and sat against the grass. Maddison did the same and fixed her messed up hair.

He ruffled his hair and smirked. He missed this.

"Alam mo bang nasa akin pa 'yung photo album na balak mong sinugin noong college tayo?" Natatawang sambit ni Maddison.

Chance grumpily snorted. "An album full of my candid shots and they're the worst."

"They aren't!" She playfully exclaimed. "Those are my favorite shots!"

He hid his surprise by cringing and looked up at the night sky. Mirroring him, Maddison did the same and copied his sitting position.

"I missed this." Chance admitted.

Maddison looked at him and smiled. "Me too. So much."

Sighing, he continued. "I can't believe years go by so fast. We grew up so fast. We learned many things so much. We discovered many things."

"And we didn't even realize that we've forgotten some things from the past," Maddison added. "Except this."

Except this. He repeated in his mind.

The gentle night breeze engulfed them. He closed his eyes for a moment and opened them immediately when he heard her gasped.

"What?"

"The Orion's Belt! Tingnan mo!"

He looked up and stilled. He traced them with his finger. "Ilang beses na ba nating nakikita 'to?"

Maddy chuckled. "Since forever."

"But seeing this tonight is the best." Chance quickly added, making her glanced at him. He stood up and cheekily smiled. "Pero alam kung anong ang mas maganda?"

Maddison excitedly stood up. "Ano?"

He looked at his wristwatch for a moment and pointed his finger at the night sky. "A meteor shower."

Maddison gasped in shock and amazement.

"One," Chance counted, still smiling and pointing at the sky. "That's two."

She dreamily walked forward as the meteors continued to show from above.

Chance lost his count when they showered down fast. He walked towards her and watched beside her. Suddenly, Maddy flung herself to h and he staggered backward - catching her into his arms.

"Thank you, Cha."

He pats her head and chuckled. "But I didn't initiate the meteor shower."

She groaned. "Ugh, stop ruining the moment!" Hinigpitan n'ya ang pagkakayakap dito. "Thank you for this day. For ditching your work just to spend this day with me. For bringing me here. For being my best friend."

Chance closed his eyes and planted a kiss above her head. He didn't respond instead, he looked up at the sky - trying to prevent any liquid that threatens to come out from his eyes.

"Of course," He tried to use his voice that was close on cracking. "Of course, Maddy. Anything for my best friend."

"I will miss you."

His grip on her tightened.

Time flew by and the night got deeper. They walked back to his truck and built a fire. He cleaned the cargo bed before spreading the blanket wide with a big fluffy comforter. They settled inside and comfortably lied on it. They munched down the snacks they bought with Paramore's songs playing on the background. Their night was filled with movie marathons, laughter, pesky jokes, and silence.

There's nowhere else to go but here. In a small space where only he and Maddison exist. This is home. His home.

Chance opened his eyes and the starry sky still greeted him. He tugged the thick blanket further to keep themselves warm. He eyed the sleeping woman beside him who used his arm as a pillow. She twitched and snuggle further against his chest. Ever do gently, he smoothened out her hair and played with its silky strand.

He ran a finger against her eyes lashes. How he adores these eyes so much when they sparkled in excitement, rounded in fear, how she rolled them whenever he's being stupid and how tears formed in them - which he doesn't ever want to happen.

Always been lost in those emerald orbs. The most beautiful eyes that his eyes ever landed on.

Bumping his finger on her nose, he grinned. This nose that twitched whenever she smelled her favorite sweet potato outside their campus. Naalala rin n'ya ang araw noong sinubukan nitong lagyan ng piercing, which she soon regretted because of the infection. She cried hard that day. Man, he struggled a lot during her emo phase. He mentally laughed.

He moved his finger further down and landed on her lips. Those lips, of course. Where her sweet smile came. Every time she opened them, every word seemed so colorful. Except for one time when she threw random profanities at her enemy back in high school. He laughed again.

He and Maddison are inseparable. They both grew up in a small town, studied in the same elementary school, high school, even college university with the same course. They have the same birthday. The same baptismal date. Even their personality type is the same.

She was his first friend. First neighbor. First best friend. First classmate. The first girl he ever danced with. The first person to witness his tears. His first enemy. His first crush.

His first love.

Everything seemed perfect as if their fate is written in the stars. As if they were made for each other. She was the wish for every penny he threw in the wishing well, in every meteor that showers through, in every silent prayer, in every small whisper and soft murmur.

This woman.

Maddison

Her.

His Maddy.

He reached down - gently grabbing her hand and stared at the diamond ring on her fourth finger.

It was just a few days ago since her engagement party.

She cried hard that night, showering kisses to her fiancé, sobbing gleefully, smiling like she's on cloud nine.

He touched the ring from her finger. It moved and realized that it didn't fit her well. The ring is too big for her delicate finger.

Reaching for his pocket, he pulled out the small blue velvety box. He opened it and removed the sparkling ring from its confines.

The ring he'd been hiding from anyone since his college days. He took part-time work just to afford it. It took a lot of sweat to reached his goal and when he finally bought it, the next thing he thought was to run towards her, dropped his knees, and offer it to her.

Just he way he planned since they were children.

Because he believed that they were made for each other.

But in one rainy night when he finally decided to confess, she came running to him instead - announcing that she and Riko are officially dating.

Since then, Chance never found a chance.

Was he a coward? No. Because he can see the love from her eyes every time they landed on Riko. From that moment he knew, he would never be the man that will make her happier.

He gently removed the loose ring from her finger and replaced it with the ring he bought.

He stared at it for a moment and soon, a set of silent tears streamed down his face.

It fits perfectly.

He chuckled against his tears and bit his lip. Unable to contain the emotions, he looked up for a moment and released a shaky breath. He looked back down, closed his eyes tightly, and silently cried. Lips are trembling as he drew her hands closer to his lips. Muffling his own sobs and feeling her warmth at the same time.

The warmth that he will soon let go once the sun rises.

Her marriage is a month away and she will be flying straight to her fiancé's birthplace tomorrow where the ceremony will be held.

It means, he would have to let go of this hand.

Chance will never forget this day that only he and Maddy seemed to exist. Her voice will be forever his favorite tune. Her laughter as his favorite melody. Her smile will be the most beautiful thing in the world and...

...and her emerald eyes....

That he will forever embed on his mind.
