Chapter 10
"Lord Dinst and his daughter, Lady Isabella!" the herald's voice echoed through the expansive ballroom, amplified by the acoustics of the coral arches above. All eyes turned toward the grand entrance as the noble pair descended, their flowing attire catching the luminescent light of the underwater palace.
Kai adjusted himself on his emerald-and-gold throne, exhaling a slow, measured sigh. The emerald scepter in his hand, once a symbol of authority, now felt like an unnecessary weight as he twirled it absently. His white-and-gold mask, adorned with fine strands of pearls, pressed uncomfortably against his cheek, and he resisted the urge to rip it off.
The ball, which had seemed like a grand idea days ago, now felt like an endless punishment. Scores of mermaids had traveled from every corner of the kingdom to attend, each one draped in their most exquisite finery, hoping to catch his eye. Yet none of them had stirred even the faintest spark of interest within him.
Lady Diana, seated beside him, was the exception—though not in the way she might have hoped. Her incessant giggles grated against his nerves, and her persistent grip on his arm only added to his growing irritation. She was already envisioning herself as queen, and the delusion was suffocating.
Kai leaned slightly toward his brother, who sat on the smaller throne to his right. Atlantis, ever poised, was observing the proceedings with a faint, amused smile. His coral-red mask framed his sharp features, making his golden eyes gleam beneath the ballroom's glowing lights.
"I think this was a terrible idea," Kai muttered under his breath, his voice low enough to avoid catching Diana's attention.
Atlantis chuckled softly. "Patience, brother," he replied, his voice light with mirth. "The night is young. Sometimes the best surprises come when you least expect them."
Kai rolled his eyes, already doubting his brother's optimism. But just as he was about to retort, a ripple of excitement swept through the ballroom. Whispers and murmurs spread like a current, drawing his attention toward the grand staircase.
"Lady Belle and her escort, Lord Morgan!" the herald announced, his voice tinged with curiosity as though even he hadn't heard of this mysterious guest until now.
Kai straightened, his grip tightening around the scepter as his gaze locked on the figure entering the hall. She was unlike anyone he had ever seen.
Her long, ebony hair flowed like ink under the glowing lights, cascading down her back in waves that shimmered faintly with bioluminescent pearls woven into the strands. Her slender figure was adorned with coral pieces bathed in silver, draped over her chest and shoulders with intricate precision. The ensemble was anchored by a sheer, flowing cloak of white, trailing behind her like a veil of moonlight. Around her waist, a strand of black pearls accentuated her hourglass form, and below it, a silvery-white tail glittered with ethereal brilliance.
Her mask, crafted from polished silver coral and adorned with luminous pearls, concealed her face. Yet even without seeing her features fully, there was something about her presence—graceful, otherworldly—that seemed to command the room. She moved with an elegance that silenced the crowd, as though she were a star descended from the heavens.
Kai's breath hitched. His heart, so indifferent throughout the evening, now raced uncontrollably.
"Brother," Atlantis murmured, his voice pulling Kai out of his trance. "She's the last guest."
"Lady Belle?" Kai echoed, his voice tinged with intrigue. "I've never heard of her."
Atlantis's lips curled into a knowing smile. "Perhaps you should change that."
Rising from his throne, Kai brushed aside Diana's hand, ignoring her huff of protest. His emerald cloak billowed behind him as he descended the dais, his focus entirely on the radiant figure before him. Questions swirled in his mind. Who was this Lady Belle? Where had she come from? And what was her connection to Morgan? His chest tightened with a mix of curiosity and longing—an unfamiliar sensation that unsettled him as much as it excited him.
"Lady Belle," he called softly as he approached her, his voice steady despite the turmoil within.
She turned toward him, her silver eyes wide with surprise beneath the mask. She dipped her head in respect, her voice melodic and soft as she replied, "Your Majesty."
Kai reached for her hand, his fingers brushing against her cool skin. He bent to kiss her knuckles, his lips lingering just long enough to feel the faint pulse of her heartbeat. "My lady," he murmured, straightening to meet her gaze, "you have outshone every star in this room tonight. I fear the other mermaids may find themselves rather envious."
A faint blush crept across her exposed cheeks. "I assure you, Your Majesty, it was not my intention to offend."
Kai chuckled, his fingers lingering on hers. "Then you must allow me to offer my protection. Shall we dance?"
The musicians, as if on cue, began a slow, haunting melody. Without hesitation, Kai pulled her into his arms, guiding her onto the dance floor.
For a moment, she hesitated, her movements tentative as though unaccustomed to the grandeur around her. But as the music swelled, she fell into step with him, her silvery tail swaying in harmony with his.
"Where are you from, Lady Belle?" Kai asked, his voice low as he leaned closer.
"Far from here," she replied softly, her lips brushing against his shoulder as she spoke.
"And how are you related to Lord Morgan?" he pressed, his curiosity deepening. "You bear no resemblance to him."
She hesitated for a moment before replying, "He is my cousin."
Kai's chest tightened as her soft form pressed against his. Something primal and possessive stirred within him, and a low growl escaped his throat before he could suppress it. The sensation startled him, but he quickly masked it, focusing instead on the woman in his arms.
They danced through the evening, their conversations flowing effortlessly as though they had known each other for a lifetime. Kai found himself laughing more than he had in years, his usual reserved demeanor melting away in her presence. Yet despite her warmth, he couldn't shake the feeling that she was holding something back. Her eyes, though kind, seemed to flit about the room as though searching for someone.
"Are you looking for someone, my lady?" Kai asked, his tone light but tinged with jealousy.
Belle's gaze snapped back to him, and she shook her head quickly. "No, Your Majesty. No one at all."
Relieved, Kai traced his fingers lightly along the clasp of her flowing cape. "Would you care to accompany me to the gardens? They are particularly beautiful tonight."
Her eyes lit with excitement, and she nodded eagerly. "I would be honored."
Kai led her through a hidden archway, away from the noise of the ballroom. The gardens stretched before them, a sprawling oasis of vibrant corals and glowing marine flora. Schools of tiny, luminescent fish darted through the waters, their light reflecting off the crystalline structures scattered throughout.
Belle gasped beside him, her hand coming to rest over her chest. "This... this is incredible," she whispered. "I've never seen anything like it."
Kai's chest swelled with pride. "My father created this garden in memory of my mother," he said quietly. "He said it made her soul visible."
Belle turned to him, her silver eyes shimmering with awe. "It's breathtaking," she said softly. Her gaze lingered on him, her voice dropping to a near whisper. "You're breathtaking."
For a moment, time seemed to stop. The weight of his responsibilities, his crown, even the palace itself—all of it faded away. Here, in this moment, he was simply Kai.
But the spell was broken by a familiar voice. "Cousin Belle!"
Belle turned, her face lighting up as she swam toward Morgan. She embraced him warmly, her laughter ringing through the water like a bell.
Kai watched silently, an unfamiliar ache blooming in his chest. As she stepped back toward him, he gently tapped her shoulder. "I must take my leave, Lady Belle," he said, lifting her hand to his lips. "But promise me this: we will meet again tomorrow. Perhaps next time, without our masks."
Her smile was radiant, her silver eyes glowing. "It would be my honor, Your Majesty."
Kai smiled, his voice softening. "Call me Kai."
As he swam away, he felt a warmth in his chest that lingered long after she had disappeared from view. For the first time in years, he felt alive. Yet beneath the warmth, a single question gnawed at him: Who was Lady Belle? And why did it feel as though she had been destined to cross his path?
