The last shot.
I couldn't help but look at the figure skates that were on my side. My hands trembled the longer I stare at it.
This was the first time that I was going to skate. I'm not even sure if I could balance myself on the ice. There was the dread where I ask myself if I would fall flat on my face on the ice or even bump right to the rink out of control. Still, those thoughts bother me a lot.
That even grew huge when I saw Naehyun putting his own figure skates and going inside, skating in a straight line at first before trying to do a jump. Now, look at him. He can do it.
But as a beginner, that would be a terrifying thing to do.
"Hey, are you alright?" I heard someone calling me from my left so I decided to turn my attention away from Naehyun. There I saw Gunyeo, his right hand on his DSLR camera. He was already wearing his figure skates so I hung my head low, not wanting to bother him.
"Um, yeah. Just going to get my figure skates ready. You should go to Naehyun," I answered, trying to avert my gaze and picked up my figure skates. He wasn't leaving though so I turned back to look at him. "Please, don't wait for me. I'll be there in a second."
It took him a few minutes before he nodded and went to follow Naehyun. I was too shy to ask for his help. Surely, skating won't be that bad. Puffing a bit of air, I decided to wear the skates and try to march over inside the rink.
Looking at the ice, I took my first step and immediately held on to the sides. No, this would be my end for sure. I tried to balance and thought that it would be better if I let go. The sides won't take me to where the two were — right on the middle.
They haven't noticed me yet so I decided to skate towards them. But as soon as my right foot slides on the ice, I was surprised when the ice suddenly looks much nearer than I expected it to be.
I almost fell flat on my face.
Though, I had tried to shield it with my arms.
The loud thud made the two look at me as I sat on the ice, holding my left arm. I grimaced. It hurts when I tried to move it.
The first one to skate in my direction was Naehyun. He then stopped right in front of me, kneeling as he tried to take a look at my arm. "Are you alright? That was a hard fall."
I tried to pry it away from Naehyun but Gunyeo followed. I could see his guilty eyes which made me frown even more. I then felt him giving me a hand to hold on as they both helped me to go back to the benches outside the rink.
As soon as we got there, I heard Gunyeo speaking as he sat beside me. "You should've told me."
It took a few minutes before I looked back at the rink again. No, I need to do this.
"I want to try again," I answered them again as they both shook their heads in disagreement with what I said. I don't want to be a hindrance to them and ruin the whole photoshoot. I want to try again and have great photos for the project.
I don't want to fail them.
I tried to march back but Gunyeo decided to block my way. His eyes pierced through mine and I stared back at them.
Please, let me.
"Gunyeo," I called out his name once again before sighing, "Let me do this."
There was a silence between us. He was hesitant to let me go back and I knew it. My eyes held the tears that were longing to drop. He couldn't bear to look at me so he avoided my gaze.
"You'll get injured again," he shortly replied.
"Then, be my lead. Guide me. Teach me," I pleaded.
"I want to try again," I added as he then sighed, knowing how persistent I would be. He then told me to hold his hand and with Naehyun. We all went back to ice and they both guided me. After a few falls and successful attempts, they tried to let me go.
I couldn't help but try to turn back to them but I saw Gunyeo doing a figure 8 before going next to me.
I smiled.
And a flash happened.
After a few photographs, we sat in the middle of the rink. We all tried to look at the shots we made and I was impressed. Most of them contained laughter and smiles that were much more present than the other photos we have taken.
Gunyeo was there with his glasses on his shirt, smiling cheekily as he held my hand to guide me.
Naehyun was there as we both looked at each other laughing.
And there was my single shot, trying to balance myself with a triumphant smile.
"As time passes by, you would see how memories are the same as photographs," I heard Gunyeo spoke as he couldn't help but stare at the photos on his camera.
"What do you mean, hyung?" That was the first time I probably heard Naehyun calling him that. Or maybe I just haven't noticed much. Gunyeo then raised an eyebrow as he turned his attention towards Naehyun.
After a few moments, he smiled.
"Each shot is magnificent if taken perfectly at the right place and at the right time." He then showed us the other photos that were beautifully taken. One of the shots was even in the golden hour.
Gunyeo then turned off the camera, looking at the ceiling of the ice skating rink before sighing. "And only we, are the ones who can make those moments unforgettable."
