chapter twenty

Who do you think Wanda is REALLY going to pick when it comes down to The Big Fight?

The answer may shock you...and me?

:)

Mount Justice

December 5, 17:04 EDT

The team, minus Robin, was gathered around with Red Tornado, Green Arrow and Red Arrow, chatting. Most of them were in their civilian clothes and Zatanna was there too.

Recognize Artemis B07

"Artemis, finally! Look who has decided to join the team." Green Arrow gestured to Red Arrow.

"Sure. The team's needed a real archer." Artemis quipped. Wanda furrowed her brow, watching as Artemis walked into the cave.

"Okay everyone, listen up. The dynamic duo is working a case in Gotham. Batman gave me a heads up. Sportsmaster was spotted coming from a New Orleans airport." Wanda looked to Artemis, noticing the tiny shift in her facial expression.

"In full costume? Nervy."

"In street clothes. Facial recognition software picked up the I.D. Find out what he's up to."

"All of us?" Pietro groaned.

"Yeah, seems like overkill for a Shadow job." Conner added.

"Perhaps a small squad." Red Tornado suggested.

"Fine. The sidekicks- sorry, ex-sidekicks, will suit up. Aqualad, Red Arrow, and Kid Flash. You're on this mission."

"I want in. With Miss Martian and Robin out, no one has logged more hours flying the bioship."

"I want in too."

"Wanda?" Pietro looked unsure.

"What? Without Miss Martian, this squad will need someone there to create a mind link." Wanda defended her decision, not voicing that she wanted to make sure Artemis was alright. "We can't have the Shadows intercepting the comms."

"Alright, then suit up." Green Arrow dismissed everyone, sending the five teammates on their way.

On the bioship, Scarlet Witch watched Artemis pilot the ship as Red Arrow and Aqualad secured one of the motorbikes at the back of the ship. She listened in psychically to the conversation.

"I take it you did not join the team for the comradery?"

"No, and not to please GA either. There's a mole on your team, Kaldur. And suspect number one, is Artemis."

Scarlet Witch felt her anger flare up at Artemis being wrongly accused of being a mole. She silently seethed, glaring out the window. How dare Roy talk badly about Artemis? She would never hurt her friends, never betray them.

A pang of guilt hit Wanda, dulling her anger slightly. The longer she hid her status, the more suspicious and less trusting her friends became of each other, especially of Artemis. All because she was selfish and afraid.

She was a terrible friend. She didn't deserve to be on the team.

Orleans Parrish

December 5, 21:27 CST

The small squad of team members watched as Sportsmaster rented a boat and took it out on the water.

Target is on the move. Pursue, but keep a distance. And that goes double for you Artemis. Sportsmaster has proven adept at spotting Martian camouflage while in motion.

Scarlet Witch rolled her eyes, looking at Artemis to see her friend set her jaw.

"Don't let him get to you, Artie. He's just jealous that you're the better archer." Wanda smiled.

"Thanks, Witchy." Artemis smiled back. "But he's right, Sportsmaster has been able to spot Martian camouflage before. I need to be careful."

He's stopped. Hold your positions.

"Who even put the new guy in charge? Kaldur is team leader." Wanda grumbled.

I'm moving in for a closer look.

"Oh, so we have to hold our positions but he can do what he wants? Makes sense."

Artemis didn't respond, instead she moved the bioship closer and opened a hatch, jumping out. Wanda joined her, hiding a few trees away.

"Hey, sis, long time no reveal who you truly are to your friends." Cheshire stood on a tree branch a yard away from Artemis, drawing the girls' attention to her. Artemis glanced at Wanda briefly before Cheshire jumped from the tree, attacking the archer. They fought for a moment, hand to hand, Artemis throwing Cheshire back. "Nice. Canary teach you that?" Artemis strung up an arrow. "Bet you'd run out of arrows before I'd run out of sword. Unless you plan on breaking out the pointy ones to use against your own sister."

"Why shouldn't I? You're working with Sportsmaster!" Artemis yelled.

"Not my choice! Not my call." Cheshire yelled back.

"Then who's call was it?"

"Sorry sis, just because I know your secrets doesn't mean I'm going to tell you mine." An arrow flew from another direction, exploding into a net and attaching Cheshire to the tree. "Why Arrow, if you wanted another date all you had to do was ask."

"You two are dating?!" Artemis yelled, worked up over the encounter.

"What? No!"

"Why deny the attraction? After all, you're here."

She just alerted Sportsmaster to us being here, he's on the move again.

Then go get him!

"Really, I'm so fond of both of you, I couldn't bear to hurt you...much." Cheshire cut herself free of the net, jumping at the two archers as Scarlet Witch flew through the trees after Sportsmaster.

She followed him along the edge of the water, watching as he shook both Aqualad and Red Arrow. She continued onwards, keeping an eye on him the entire time.

Scarlet Witch ended up at a strange toy factory, watching through the skylights as Sportsmaster handed the brief case to Ivo. She noticed the Brain, Klarion, and Monsieur Mallah there as well. She narrowed her eyes.

"Thank you, Sportsmaster, we'll take it from here." Ivo took the brief case, setting it down on the table.

Sportsmaster then looked up, winking at Wanda. She gasped, backing away from the glass as her pulse quickened. He knew she was following him, which meant he wants her to see this. But why her and not the others? Unless...

Sportsmaster knows.

Which could mean trouble for Wanda. He was a man who worked for himself, he could not be trusted to keep her secret.

Unfortunately, Wanda didn't have time to think about it as Artemis showed up with Red Arrow, both of them jumping into fights with Cheshire and Sportsmaster. She jumped down, joining the fray.

"SW! Where'd you come from?" Artemis asked, dodging a punch from Cheshire.

"Roof, I was observing the next room. Klarion and the Brain are in there with Ivo and Monsieur Mallah. I don't know what they're doing." She answered, yelping when a javelin went flying at her.

She turned to glare at Sportsmaster, working her way into his mind to find out if he did in fact know her secret. When she found out the truth, she erased his knowledge of her working with the Light just in time to see him turn to ice and shatter.

"Let me be clear. We failed." Kaldur announced to the rest of them team once the five of them got back. Wanda looked to the ground, a small part of her wanting to respond that she hadn't failed in her small mission. "Though the Injustice League is in custody, their allies still scheme. And we have learned nothing of their plans."

"Gee, I wonder why." Red Arrow glared at Artemis.

"Lay off her! Ever since you joined the team, you have done nothing but belittle and berate Artemis." Wanda growled at Roy.

"She ditched the tracer and planted a fake on Cheshire." Roy grit out.

"Artemis, did you plant a fake tracer to try and prove yourself?" Wally asked. Artemis said nothing. "Nice going. What you proved was that you are insecure and selfish."

"So how will you betray us next time?"

"Enough!" Wanda snapped. "We all make mistakes, what matters is how we learn from them." The team said nothing, avoiding her eyes. Wanda clucked her tongue. "Wow. Okay. I see. I thought this team was a family, but I guess all we are is a group of people who refuse to forgive and help each other learn to be better."

"I must report to Batman, everyone get some sleep." Kaldur gave everyone pointed looks.

Everyone dispersed except Roy, Artemis, and Wanda. Roy took a step towards Artemis but Wanda stepped in his way, staring up at him. He glared at her before walking off to the zeta tubes. Wanda turned to Artemis. "Art-"

"Thank you, Wanda, for sticking up for me. But I really just want to go to-"

"I know." Wanda whispered.

About your family. I've known the whole time.

Artemis' eyes widened.

H-how?

On one of our first missions, before you joined the team, I was briefly taken by Sportsmaster. He said he had a daughter around my age who also went against orders. He said she was an archer, which fit her name perfectly, since she was named Artemis. When you joined the team, the pieces fell into place right away.

Are you...are you going to tell anyone?

No! That isn't my place. I just wanted to tell you that I get why this mission was so intense for you. You went up against your father and your sister -I heard what Cheshire said to you, about being your sister- and you had Red Asshat being a Grade A jerk the whole time. It was a lot.

Thank you, Wanda.

Wanda smiled at Artemis. "Despite what Roy and the other's may think and feel, I trust you, Artemis. You did what you felt was best."

Artemis smiled back at Wanda. "That means a lot to me. Thank you. I gotta go though. I'll see you soon?"

"You bet." Wanda watched Artemis leave through the zeta tubes, her heart pounding in her chest.

She was going to miss Artemis the most after Pietro.
