IV. - Dinner Talk

Once everyone got their plates of food served, and Phil took his spot at the head of the table, an uncomfortable silence fell upon them. The teen elytrian knew what was bound to come – a lecture about her needing to know how to fly and use her wings for combat, not only for warming herself up in the cold. Taking a bite of her steak, the girl waited for the speech to come, feeling the sympathetic gazes of the twins on her frame once more, as if the past repeated itself. She felt anything, but content, at that given second, her gaze stuck on the plate in front of her, not even Tommy being able to lift the mood. Bittersweet.

“Evelyn, we need to teach you how to fly. It is essential for your living, and it might save you one day.” The oldest spoke, making the only girl sigh silently and put down her utensils. She hasn’t even taken a proper bite from her meal, and grabbed a napkin, to wipe off her lips. “what are you doing young lady?” Phil asked once she started standing up from her seat next to Tommy. Her mismatched eyes met Phil’s and he swore chills ran down his spine, reliving the event from around three months ago, when this stare met his upon finding her back in the snowy tundra, helpless yet still full of newfound passion to fight for her life. Back then, her body was weak, trembling and unable to function but now, she’s strong, back at a healthy weight and dressed up in clean clothes. She definitely looked much better now.

“I want to respect Wilbur; I don’t need my wings. I want him to feel comfortable around me, and those are my final words. I do not want to talk about it ever again.” The girl said, before leaving the table to head outside. Maybe she acted immature, and she realized it the second the chilly wind hit her skin after stepping into the field, but brushed it off and sat down in the grass, hugging her scarred knees close to her body. Maybe it was pathetic of her to think that Will would befriend her or change his mind, just because she refused to fly. All she wanted ever since she came to this family was to have a nice relationship with everyone, including the brunette. Yet, he seemed cold and distant all the time, refusing to be the great brother like Techno. She thought nothing of it at first, thinking he might’ve not been warmed up to her, but one night, she heard him talk to Techno about feeling left out for being the most human-like among them all, and about hating the fact that ‘even the new kid was special’. That night, Evelyn threw her dream of flying behind, and decided she won’t learn to fly. “you were right mom, maybe I am a failure. First it’s the curse, now I refuse to fly. I will never touch the stars, like you wanted me to.” The girl spoke to the stars, unaware of two men standing behind her.

A tug at the bandage on her back pulled her back to the reality, feeling the rich wings on her back get released to their full potential, blue ornaments glowing like the stars on the night sky, creating something like a glowing shield around her. Her head snapped towards the brunette that held the bandage in his hands, with Phil behind him with a bowl of something she assumed to be a salad she’s made herself earlier that day. “I want to see you touch the stars, though.” Wilbur said, sitting beside her, handing her the bowl from Phil’s hands. “I never knew you were doing this because of me.” The brunette muttered, guilty. Phil left the two teens alone, going to tuck in Tommy. Evelyn nodded her head and closed her wings on her back again, resisting the urge to wrap one of them around her brother. The brunette noticed a constellation glowing over the wings, as if it kept them closed, something like a glowing belt – a puzzle that fell together only when the wings got closed down, amazing him. He recognized the three connected stars, as the Orion’s belt, and a bow like constellation that appeared on her right side. “yours are bigger than Phil’s. Is it because you’re a nocturnal?” a question rolled off of his tongue, the girl nodding once more.

She felt vulnerable, scared that whatever would leave her lips would get twisted up and thrown against her. She trusted Wilbur, but tried not to be annoying, treasuring the moment they were sharing. “You know, I’m not completely useless.” The older chuckled, trying to lighten up the situation, grasping an old, golden necklace that hung loosely from Evelyn’s wing joint and hid it in between his palms, a small, yellowish glow coming from the inside of them. Upon opening his palms, the gold shone as if it were new, the pendant resembling an Eye of Ender gaining back its original, bright colors. The pendant wasn’t bigger than Evelyn’s thumb nail, maybe even a tad smaller than that, yet it held a secret meaning, and so much power behind it. Nobody else, other than Evelyn and the kid that gave it to her knew.

“I got this from Ranboo. He’s a kid of an Enderman. He is quite a strange child, with a skin that’s split in between black and white, and his mouth is unusually huge, but back when I was freezing in the tundra, I noticed him in the middle of a lake, trapped in a boat. Poor kid couldn’t get out or teleport, and so I helped him out by rowing the boat back to the shore. He then proceeded to gift me this. I haven’t taken it off ever since, hoping to meet him once more.” The girl explained, clipping the necklace around her neck once more. “wanna see something cool?”

The two laid down in the grass, the girl’s arm extending towards the sky gently, light forming above her palm. “this is Sirius, one of the brightest stars in the night sky.” She spoke, the blue light suddenly leaving from her grasp, replaced by an orange one. “Betelgeuse.” She began showing the brunette all the important stars, planets and galaxies, all the things she could hold in her palms, including the Sun, and the Moon of their Earth.

“I regret not being a good brother to you, Eevee.”
