Chapter 7-B: The Smoke That Ignited the Fire
Donovan felt her throat grow dry. She wasn't too sure what was happening, since this exact event had never been described before in textbook. However, judging by the look of the scene, she could gather that it wasn't going to end too pretty. Her mind began racing to remember everything single spell and curse that she had ever learned – one of them were bound to come in handy at one point, if this was as bad as she feared.
Her eyes scanned the room until they locked and focused on Professor Albert, scrutinizing him to find some sort of answer as to what she was supposed to do. Adam stepped a little closer to her, ready to work with her, if necessary. He pulled his own wand out of his sleeve and held it firmly in his hand, prepared to make any moves vital to survival.
"Put that away," Jo said with a sarcastic laugh growling in her words. She marched over to him and plucked it away from him, toying it in her hands. "This is of no use to you now." Jo tossed it to the ground without much care in the action. She muttered something under her breath that ultimately led to pushing Donovan to the side. Jo chuckled at the sight of her friend falling to the ground before peeking outside the window to see her mentor.
Mistress Josephine watched the chaos she created take over the land. Black ghost-like creatures began roaming the evanescent normal sky. Clouds of darkness began to form and even the moon seemed to be laughing at Donovan and the others. Mistress Josephine found herself looking up at the tower Jo was looking out of and she gave her apprentice a tiny wink. Their plan was coming together just fine, as of yet.
Needing to do something than just sit there, Donovan got on her feet and tackled Jo. "Get off of me!" Jo screeched. The girls battled it out, trying to keep Jo tied down to the ground. If she was unable to see Mistress Josephine, then perhaps their plan wouldn't work out completely. There might even be an opportunity to prevent the evil and allow it to only spread to oblivion. Adam marched towards the window and to his dismay, he saw that Mistress Josephine was no longer there.
"Surprise!" a voice breathed on the back of Adam's neck. The four searched for the source of the voice, yet there was no one in the room besides from them. An invisibility charm, Donovan thought, trying to search for a logical answer.
"Presco," she whispered, abiding by her theory. As the spell released from her lips, Mistress Josephine stood behind Adam with a snarky smirk on her face.
"Smart girl," Mistress Josephine said, acknowledging Donovan's attempt in figuring out her magic. She snapped her fingers that were dressed in black lace, forcing Donovan and Jo to separate. Miss Josephine gave Donovan a slow smile. "If only you were smart enough to have seen that coming."
Mistress Josephine made her way over to where Jo sat on the ground. She offered her apprentice a hand. "Come with me, Jo. We can make the world pay for the wrong that it did us." Jo immediately took her mentor's hand and they began walking towards Professor Albert's door.
"Before you go, Josephine, why don't you enlighten us on what this is all about?" Professor Albert tapped her fingers against his desk with a mockingly enthusiastic smile.
"Revenge." Mistress Josephine smirked, strutting away with Jo in her hand.
Donovan watched the two evaporate into thin air. She always wanted to try teleportation, but in Elmwood it was considered a part of the dark arts, something that she never wanted to get mixed up in. However, the idea of it always appealed to her. Imagine being able to snap your fingers and end up in a completely different location!
"We lost," Adam sighed.
Donovan elbowed his side. "No, we didn't. This isn't over yet, Adam! We can't just stand here and let them get away with whatever this is."
Professor Albert let out a small chuckle. "I admire your optimism, Donovan, but that's not how it works around here. Do you see that smoke rising in the air? This event is called Hebro Hoxums and it has only occurred twice before. The purple smoke rising is called jaguar and the green is emerald. Jaguar is a poison that when used in a spell becomes toxic to anyone who inhales it. Instead of dying like one would do when drinking it, they begin to have some evil thoughts. Emerald is almost the same thing – anyone who is given some in a drink will die immediately, but if just inhaled, they perform evil acts. When jaguar and emerald come together, the whole race could die off because everyone is having and performing evil acts. Death is among all of us."
Adam slapped his forehead for whatever reason. He threw his arms around Donovan with tears in his eyes. "So, then this is the end."
She groaned, pushing him off of her. "Stop it. Please, Professor Albert, what can we do to stop this? I mean, if it's happened twice before and our race is still here, then someone must have come up with something to stop it."
"The last Hebro Hoxums occurred when I was a teenager and the first when I was a young boy. I fought in the resistance as a teenager and after we won the battle, everyone decided that it would be best to take Hebro Hoxums out of the textbooks and classroom setting. We never wanted any of this to happen again, but it seems as though Mistress Josephine found an old textbook page that had the event on it. I suppose that she's been using Jo to help assist her in bringing about the death of us." Professor Albert shared his insight with the two young students.
"So how did you win, then?" Donovan asked, filled with eagerness to destroy the jaguar and emerald poisoning their air.
Professor Albert peered outside the large window, overlooking all of Delawell. "When I became headmaster, I enchanted the lands of Delawell so that neither jaguar nor emerald could ever affect us here, especially not together. For instance, if you slipped someone jaguar or emerald on the grounds of Delawell, they would live, until they stepped outside our land for even a second. Drinking it is does result in death, always remember that. Inhaling it here and then stepping into someplace where the poisons weren't present, one would still remain normal."
"So we are safe until we leave the Delawell grounds, as long as outside of Delawell these poisons creep?" Adam asked with a half relieved, half scared look.
Professor Albert smiled. "Precisely! It is the rest of the race that we must be worrying about – not ourselves."
"Why don't you cast your enchantment spell over the rest of Elmwood?" Adam suggested.
"That won't work, since the toxins have already been released into the air there. We have to find the source of where Mistress Josephine is releasing the jaguar and emerald from, destroy it, and end Hebro Hoxums again. It takes strong magic and teamwork to defeat it, though. We'll need brave and strong people to surround us." Professor Albert raised one of his grey eyebrows at the two, open to any suggestions.
"Josh," Adam shrugged, thinking of his best friend.
"Emma and Abbi are very talented in different areas," Donovan shared.
Professor Albert nodded. "So Donovan, Josh, Adam, Emma, and Abbi will be put in charge of finding the source and destroying it. It's a good fit – all of you have different areas that you have perfected, all of which will come in handy. Good luck."
Adam stood there dumbstruck. "Wait, we're going alone?"
"I cannot make the journey – it's time for a new group to join forces and defeat this round of Hebro Hoxums. I have full faith in all of you – five of my best students. Use what you learned during your years here and do Delawell proud. Protect Elmwood, my students. The fate of our race rests in your hands, but no pressure."
