Chapter 5-A: The Demon Comes Out at Midnight
Chapter Five
The Demon Only Comes Out at Midnight
Donovan stared straight into Jo's eyes, preparing to let all of hell break loose with just one simple snap of her fingers. That's no exaggeration, by the way. She had learned how to do so back during her third year and she was ready to use the spell on her ex-friend. Jo let out a nervous laugh seeing Donovan and Adam together, but she didn't dare run away. Jo could be a lot of things – a liar included, but she was not a coward.
"See you two have had a lovely chat." Jo rubbed her tongue against her front teeth, obviously feeling uncomfortable about the situation at hand. She most definitely didn't have any desire to set things straight with Donovan, and she sure wasn't too pleased with Adam at the moment. He could have kept the secret that he didn't know had been talked about.
Donovan nodded her head, slightly, but completely agitated. "Jo, you lied to me, broke my heart, and ruined our friendship. Would you like to explain to me why? After everything we've been through together, too!" She tried to look into Jo's eyes and find the old friend that she knew was somewhere still in there. They had been through too much together for Jo to want to just throw everything away. Everything that they had built up together. The girls had practically built their own empire with their friendship, but now their kingdom was being torn in two.
Jo paced around in a circle, probably preparing to feed the two some rubbish to keep them quiet. "Donovan, what if I told you that nothing we ever had was real? What if I said that our whole friendship was an entire hoax and I was just using you to get what I wanted? And now that I have it, I'm done with you and dropping everything we ever had. What if I told you that I'm not who you think I am?" She eyed Donovan, who had curiosity peeping out of her. Jo snickered, knowing full well that she now had Donovan's attention captured.
Donovan released Adam's hand and walked closer to Jo, who was perched up against a column of Delawell with a mere smirk covering her face. Eyes began to well up in Donovan's brown eyes and she was suddenly at a loss of words, far too sad and tired to speak a word, frankly. She just fingered through her brown curls, trying to tame them and make herself feel a bit more at ease. Though, Donovan only felt restless and at a complete loss.
She just gave Jo a sad smile and with a soft voice, she whispered. "I only hope that you're happy, Jo. You've made your decisions and you have lost me. I hope this what you wanted. I hope that you are pleased with the decisions that you have made. You've chosen what you've wanted, Jo, and there's no going back now."
Donovan turned on her heel and headed back towards where Adam awaited her. Their hands found each other as their fingers locked together. The couple walked away together, leaving Jo to dwell on the scene. Donovan was upset for the time being, but Jo knew that she would get over with it with enough happiness sprinkled on her life. Such things like Adam, Emma, and Abbi. Jo knew that her services were no longer needed.
"Hey, let's go grab some shaken ice before we head back to school, okay?" Adam pinched Donovan's cheeks, which were wet from her tears. He took his hands and brushed away her tears, until they were completely gone. Donovan looked up at him, noticing that he actually cared about her. A genuine smile took over her and she suddenly felt silly for those tears to fall from her face. She vowed to herself in that moment that those tears would be the absolute last that she would waste on Jo.

"Red shaken ice and a brown!" the waiter called from behind the counter, serving the rose colored one to Donovan and the brown to Adam. They were at everyone's favorite treat shop – Delawell's Sweet Shoppe Stop. It was where a lot of students liked to hang out in between classes, on the weekends, or whatever free time they had. It looked like a fifties' diner and all the workers even worked on rollerblades. The owner and founder of the restaurant had come up with the whole idea of the shop when he claimed to have visited another world. This was what he chose to bring back with him – a cultural hang out place.
Shaken ice was the most popular treat there and it happened to be Donovan's favorites. Although, she had to admit that malts were equally as delicious. Basically, shaken ice was a frozen, creamy treat that people drank out of a straw. The founder guy claimed that in the other world the flavors for shaken ice were something like 'chalkalot' and 'frostberry', but as he couldn't remember the names correctly, he properly named them by color. The rose colored one was what he thought was 'frostberry', though he could have been mistaken.
Donovan, personally, believes that it's just an old wives' tale that they tell about the founder. She didn't believe that the guy had taken a trip to another world. If he had, then why didn't more people take trips there, at least? He could have returned there and learned the proper names of the flavors, if he really wanted to know. She assumed that he did as he opened an entire shop dedicated to the food that mortals eat.
"Amburgers are also really good!" Adam laughed, his eyes wide with delight. "Have you ever tried one before?"
Donovan bit down on her lips, shaking her head. "Not yet! I usually only come here for the shaken ice and malts. Sometime, maybe we will come here and try it together."
"I would really like that," Adam said with a smile on his face.
Donovan felt safe and secure with him for some strange reason. She was only beginning to know him, so how did she feel so trusting of him? She assumed that the only reason she put so much faith into him was because she was just trying to get over her broken friendship with Jo. Then again, Donovan did not want to believe that she was so stupid as to just blindly hop into a relationship to take her mind off a broken one.
Thinking about Jo and all the memories that the two shared hurt, but Donovan couldn't stop herself from doing so. Almost all of her career at Delawell contained memories of her friend, so to erase her memories of Jo would be erasing her memories of Delawell. She couldn't tell what hurt more: knowing their friendship had failed or erasing memories from her school.
"Oh, I have class now!" Adam screeched, seeing the hourglass on a high shelf at the restaurant. "Sorry, love, but I have to run!" He grabbed his shaken ice and ran out of the Sweet Stop Shoppe. Donovan didn't care so much that he was gone because she had enjoyed his company so much. Her only worry was how she was going to deal with Jo. She needed to win her friendship back and find out what really happened between them.
They were roommates and Donovan could not intrude on Emma and Abbi forever. Donovan and Jo were best friends – they would always find their way back to one another.
