Chapter 4

"Drew, this is... Um... Wren," Killian introduced, using air quotations around my pseudo-name. The blonde boy nodded in understanding.

"I see," he said, "Well, Wren, your horse is doing well. He missed you, though."

"Thank you Drew," I smiled.

"Killian, how much does she know?" Drew asked. Killian laughed.

"She didn't know anything until yesterday, actually..." he said. Drew's eyes widened.

"What does she know then?"

"I told her about the war, the queen-"

"She didn't know about the queen?! How long has she been gone?"

"I'm right here," I interrupted.

"Right," Drew said apologetically, sticking out his hand. I took it gratefully and smiled. "Nice to finally meet you, Sa- Wren. Killian has told me much about you." I blushed.

"He has?" I asked quietly. Killian cleared his throat and Drew shook his head as if to clear his thoughts.

"I mean, he is your guardian, and your knight, and he should know a lot about you and there are a lot of questions about you and I'm an acquaintance, so-"

"Moving on," Killian interjected. "Where are the horses?"

"In the stables, don't worry - I've disguised them."
"Thank you," Killian replied, following Drew out of the small house. I rolled my eyes and followed them - did they expect me to follow or stay behind? And what did Drew mean by disguise? How would someone disguise a horse? We walked around the side of the house and back to a small stable with no door. Drew walked through the opening in the wall and smiled proudly.

"If you can tell which horse is yours I'll give you some food for the road," he challenged Killian, who laughed.

"You think I can't find my horse? I can see my familiar's eyes you know." He walked around the stable, looking every horse in the eye as he passed their stalls. After a minute, he froze completely and smiled wide. "Jaspar!" He called. The cream colored horse whinnied and waited for Killian to open the stall door.

"I forgot about that stupid bond," Drew chuckled. "Looks like I owe you two dinner then." I smiled - I hadn't even realized I was hungry until he mentioned food. Drew waved his hand and Jaspar changed from a cream color to a dark brown, with a white patch on it's head.

"Wha- How... What?" I stuttered.

"She doesn't even know about magic?" Drew asked, dumbfounded. Killian hesitated for a moment, then sighed.

"We're... Working on that," he laughed.

"Again, right here!" I said, frustrated. They both laughed, only making me more frustrated.

"Sorry, sorry," Drew chuckled. "Whad'ya reckon, Killian? Bellytimber Tavern? Gundygut? Tidliwink's? Or maybe the Crughouse!"

"I thought this food was for the road?" I pointed out. Drew and Killian laughed.

"When I say for the road, I mean we're walking there and eating," Drew joked. "I'm a firm believer in full meals."

"Let's make this quick though, the Queen... Well, we've got to leave soon." Killian said, sharing a look with Drew. I eyed him suspiciously, but regardless followed him and Drew out of the stables.
