Chapter 3
"See? I told you Sardor wasn't far!" Killian said happily. We had just arrived in a small town, with tiny houses that had thatched rooves and hanging store signs. The people were scrambling about busily, most of them looking down and barely glancing up to see where they were going. It was such a normal looking scene, I almost forgot that I was in danger until Killian pulled me behind a house. "Listen, you need to keep your head down. Actually, stay back here until I come back," he warned. "You need to stay away from everyone until I can get you a disguise."
"I have to be disguised?" I asked.
"Yes. If someone sees you, they're ordered to kill you on sight," he said. I gulped and nodded.
"Okay."
"I'll be back soon. Not many people recognize me, so I should be fine - especially once I get village clothes for myself. Now stay out of sight and out of trouble."
I nodded again and watched him walk around the corner, leaving me concealed on the edge of the forest. I sighed and sat down on a rock, when I realized something was in my pocket. My phone! I grabbed it and turned it on. This is my dream, I should be able to use my phone. When it finally turned on, there wasn't even an option to connect to internet. I sighed again and opened an app - bad idea. The screen started flashing and pixelating, then the light fizzled out. Lovely. There was no way my phone died, it couldn't! It must be the battery, I thought. I took the case off, flipped it over and popped the battery out. Looking it over, I blew off any dust and put the battery back in the phone, then put the case back on and pressed the power button and... It turned on! Well, no internet, and no games. What can I do? As I tried countless apps, I heard someone walk up behind me. I turned around.
"Killian, I can't use my-" My words caught in my throat as I realized that the person I was looking at was not Killian. Rather, it was a young boy seemingly taking out the trash from his home. I stared at him wide eyed and frozen.
"A-are you-" he stuttered. I shook my head silently, pleading him to ignore me. His own eyes widened as he realized who I was. "P-Princess Sabrina?" I shook my head again and he turned to run.
"Don't!" I shouted desperately. He froze and turned back to me, afraid. In an instant, I regretted my decision. He turned his head and shouted, attracting a few people. I backed up against a tree as they regarded me in disgust - I'm sure they all recognized me by now. The boy was hiding behind a man who couldn't have been older than thirty, and two more people were with them, staring me down.
"This isn't a place I'd expect to find a princess," the man spat. "The chief will deal with her." Then they moved to the side and let someone through and closer to me. It was then that I realized the thing they let through was not human... Rather, a human-sized wolf, walking on it's hind legs as if it were human after all. But there was one more thing off about the animal: it had a long scar across its abdomen, a wound that something shouldn't have been able to survive. My eyes widened - the undead army. The wolf walked closer to me and it's snout twitched as it smelled the air.
"I smell royal blood..." the wolf snarled in its hideous voice, its eyes turning to slits.
"I-I don't know what y-you're talking ab-bout..." I stuttered, trying in vain to back up farther against the tree.
"I have orders to kill you on sight," he continued, staring me down and walking closer. "I think it's time I followed them." It walked even closer to me and I shut my eyes tight and slid to the bottom of the tree, becoming as small as possible and awaiting inescapable death - until I heard shouts. Shouts, screams, thumps, all kinds of different sounds, confusing and discombobulating in my current state. I squeezed my eyes shut even tighter and barely moved from my position on the ground. A few minutes later, the shouts ceased and it was... Quiet.
Quiet, except for the unmistakable sound of footsteps through the grass, coming closer and closer to where I sat. I refused to move, knowing it must be one of the people that wanted me dead.
"Sabrina? Are you alright?" A panicked voice asked. Killian. I slowly raised up my head and my grey eyes met his green ones. He smiled in a pathetic attempt to cheer me up, but fear still gripped my senses.
"W-What happened?" I asked, a barely audible whisper.
"The chief was ready to attack you, I couldn't let that happen..." Killian whispered back, looking away. My eyes widened.
"What did you do?" Before he could answer, I looked around and gasped in horror. The wolf laid lifeless on the ground, and there was no trace of the four others. "You... You killed it?"
"It was technically already dead once, I simply returned it to the spirit realm..." he said, his voice wavering. "I know it wasn't the best way to deal with things, but Bri, I had to! It was the only way..." I nodded, unable to speak. "Are you okay?" I nodded again, slowly this time. "I have an outfit for you to change into, whenever you're ready... Then we can get the horses." Killian held out his hand and I took it, standing up shakily.
"What can I wear that will prevent them from knowing it's me?" I asked. They will always know it's me... This will happen again, I thought to myself, and I had a terrible feeling that I was right.
"I have a dress for you, and a wig," he said, "This way we can tell people we're brother and sister." He held up a light blue peasant dress and the dark wig, obviously nervous that it may not work. "Oh, and another thing - you'll need a new name..."
"Thank you," I replied, taking the clothes. "Can I come up with any name I want?"
"I suppose so,"
"What about Wren?" I asked, smiling. Killian nodded.
"I like it," he answered. I pulled on the wig and he laughed, fixing it himself.
"You put it on wrong, love." He smiled. Why didn't I notice before that he had an accent?
"Thanks," I smiled gratefully. I took the blue dress from him and he turned around so I could quickly change. "Where to next?" I asked. He turned back around and took in my new appearance.
"Horses. We need our horses..." he trailed off, still staring at me.
"What?"
"Nothing, just... You're beautiful, you know that?" He replied. I blushed.
"Thank you..."
"Anything for a princess," he nodded and extended his arm, which I took gladly. "Shall we, Wren?"
"We shall," I laughed.
